Can anybody take Chris Rock seriously in a serious role?

Don’t necessarily know if it’ll work out this time, but comedians tend to transfer to serious acting roles pretty well, for whatever reason. Or at least that’s something I’ve felt.

I bought all 7 or 8 of them on blu ray a couple of years ago and marathoned them all. They were fun to watch but the first is easily the best by miles.

At least it looks like money and production was put into this one unlike the previous one that I guess was made out of necessity or someone needed money badly. C rated actors, C rated acting, C rated effects.

I like the old guy. He should have more roles or at least prominent ones in other movies.

Hell have him in a Star Wars movie as a villain. They have Gus Fring flying TIE Fighters, they can have Jigsaw show up as an ancient Sith or something.

Hologram old SAW guy as an ancient Sith master appears to Jedi: "I want to play a game."

I am looking forward to this as the Saw series needs a refresh and I want to see Chris Rock be the next comedian to transition into serious film making successfully.

That name is goofy as fuck though: Spiral From The Book Of Saw? Who the fuck made that name lmao

This is actually Chris' passion project, he came to Lionsgate with the idea, not the opposite. Could also be how/why he roped Sammy J in.

I'm kinda excited, I love the franchise even though it devolves into hilariously contrived bullshit. Still think the first is a legitimately great movie.

I've never seen a Saw film not do I have a desire to see one. I once went in blind to watch Hostel 2. For some reason I thought it was some kind of noir/mystery film but it turned out to be the gruesome garbage that it is. I remember leaving the movies feeling depressed.

TBH i enjoyed the films until SAW 3D. sure it's not exactly creepy and kept repeating the same formula but somehow i liked the plot twists.

Don't ever mention the pile of Garbage called Jigsaw (2017). Among the worst movies i've ever seen

These were fun movies. Some better than others. Obviously, it is hard to recreate that same magic over and over like they did with the first. I will watch

Saw 1 is a legit detective mystery horror which happens to be gory in places. Everything after it devolved into a combination of torture porn and convoluted nonsense, and I say that as a fan. Seriously, give the first one a try and stop there.

Yeah no, without Tobin Bell, this is useless, the biggest part of the charm was his voice...

The most recent Saw was pure shit but this looks it's going back to the roots, which is a good thing because the first Saw was the only one that was genuinely good.

I could, Chris has shown some "serious" tones in movies. Or maybe they're introducing a bit of comedy into the series? Who knows anymore.

I just know that Saw 3D/the last chapter is one of my favorite dark comedies. The opening effects were so bad I burst out laughing and it ruined the tone of the movie for me and I completely lost it where they used Chester from Linkin Park in that car scene, I was waiting for them to just go CRAWLING IN MY SKKKKKIIIIIIIINNNNNN

He's also a lead in a new Fargo season. The trailer showed him smirking through every scene. The guy just can't do drama.

On topic of comedians doing serious films, they generally seem to do drama better than comedy.

Robin Williams
Jim Carrey
Steve Carrell

Indeed, especially Carrey. I mean, I greatly enjoy Bruce Almighty and Liar Liar, but absolutely LOVE Truman Show and especially Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The latter was my first exposure to him in a serious role and due to the facial hair and such different acting than his usual stuff, I didn't even realize it was him until 20 minutes in (this was back in college and I was hanging with friends and a friend suggested we watch it but I didn't know who was in it).

Yup, the first one is a genuinly great indie movie, with a very cool plot, great ideas and execution.

This is the only thread I could find for this movie.

Saw it last night. It's nothing special and made me wonder why it was even greenlit. Or why it has anything to do with Saw at all, aside from the idea of using traps to maim and/or kill.

I also figured out who the killer was very early, I just didn't know WHY until the reveal. The moment he stepped away to borrow Chris Rock's phone, I instantly knew it was him.

Having said that, it's still better than the torture porn sequels.

Difference is Sandler was great in Uncut Gems, Chris Rock is pretty awful in this movie sadly.
Performance didn’t factor into the question. The question was about a comedic actor being taken seriously. If you remember Tom Hanks was comedic until he wasn’t. Comedians are often great at drama.

I totally get what you're saying, but like you just said they're "often" great at drama. Chris Rock is the rare case of one not being good at drama.

Props for Chris Rock trying something different though, he'll only get better from here.

The series painted itself in a corner when it killed off Jigsaw so early. After that it just kept running on fumes and “surprise he had an apprentice!” By the end of the original series’ run I was more surprised by who wasn’t an apprentice.
