I hope he learns how to hold a camera steady before making it, Bourne Supremacy almost gave me motion sickness...

I've never understood the people who have problems with shaky cam films.. seems odd to me. Anyway, saw this last night and was stoked -- Paul Greengrass is one of the best directors working today. Everyone owes it to themselves to see Bloody Sunday -- it is a total masterpiece.

Shakycam is annoyingly bad for two main reasons:

1) Because I didn't pay to see the new fad of "OMG YOU ARE THE STAR OF THIS SECTION DUDE"
2) Substance does not make up for style. Ever.

Then again, you're always the man with the hyperbole, Meier.

I just don't think a Watchmen film should be attempted, because no matter what, it won't be good.

However, a very high budget HBO mini could be great. I just think you'd lose too much in condensing the story into a 2 hour movie.

Now this could be done well.

Bur, if they must attempt it... good friggin luck. They're gonna have to nail everything to do it justice. There's so many ways they could go wrong. Dr. Manhattan for instance.. oh boy. The great thing was every single character had a ton of depth. If you are going throw anybody in there and give them minimum screen time you will fuck it up. It almost just doesnt seem possible in a movie format. Rorsach and Manhattan scare me the most.

So much of the Watchmen experience was page layout, art, and rereading. No idea how they're going to do it justice.

How do you do a symmetrical chapter like #5?

Exactly. The reason the comics was so damn good was that it was a celebration of the comic book form. To do a different iteration, no matter how well-intentioned, would be totally pointless.

Read the comic recently. Didn't know this was even in the talks about becoming a movie.

Wonder if some will think it rips off The Incredibles just a bit.

The problem I had with the shaky cam in the Bourne Supremacy was that during the fight sequence in the house in Berlin, and during the final car chase, there were moments when I just could not see what was happening. What's the point of having fight choreography and laying out a decent car chase if you're just going to ruin it by having the camera zipping around all over the place for "dramatic effect"? It almost ruined the film for me, though it probably doesn't look as bad on the small screen.

I think a Watchmen movie could be good, but I don't see how they're going to do it without making it pretty long and/or cutting a lot of stuff out. I guess they'd also need to get an actor who's relatively unknown to play Rorschach in order to keep the surprise about his identity, which is unlikely as he's one of the main characters and the producers would therefore presumably want someone big in that role.

I think the shaky cam aesthetic has been driven into the ground, and would like to get back to being able to clearly see what's happening, detailed fight choreography, that sort of thing. Nothing wrong with it per se, it's just way overdone.

I loved Bloody Sunday, but if it had been any more cinema verite, I was going to puke. The documentary style camera running around looked amazing...but about 20 minutes into the film I had to move from near the front to the very back row, and still felt queasy for the rest of the flick.

Meanwhile, I wish him luck with Watchman; while it may not be unfilmable, it's going to be hell to properly adapt.
