Busy busy busy

You guys need to play some Xenoblade to understand what's going on.

If you have to play an earlier unconnected game to understand the appeal, it may be an issue with the game not being clear. Nothing wrong with that if that is what they want, but posts like this are a bit stupid.

Xenoblade's appeal wasn't clear to a lot of people before they played it, either. Many people picked it up because of the hype despite not having any particular interest and ended up really liking it. Sometimes games are like that. That's probably why the game wasn't a blockbuster, but either way. It's just really fun to play, and as such, some people need to play it to get it.

I don't get all this "hype deflated" shenanigans, did you people play Xenoblade? This is exactly what I expected to see, obviously the game still has a ways to go in development so I'm not worried about the animations being choppy at this point.

Everything about this game from the moment it was revealed says that it's, at the very least, a spiritual successor to Xenoblade. A game that many people have called the best JRPG in the last 8 years.

it's close enough that being called Xenoblade 2 would make sense, what with the new worlds being created and all

You would think they would put that stuff on the gamepad leaving the screen clear like the trailer. That was a big thing many people said the gamepad could help devs in the rpg genre.

I think it would be kind of awkward in a realtime game. If you have HP, buff/debuff, arts/skills on the bottom screen you're going to be looking at that more than you are the TV. But if it requires position or running to a mech or something that's not going to work all that well, that info still needs to be on the TV one way or another.

The minimap could go though.

Man it's like 90% of the people hyped for this were just interested in pretty graphics and gifs and had no idea how Xenoblade even played.

It's like if I'd never played a Metal Gear and I watched a story trailer for 5 and got all hyped then looked at gameplay and was like "wtf this is a stealth game? so lame!!!"
Makes no sense to me.

If there's an option to move UI elements down to the touch screen, that solves any issues people might have. The one thing about Xenoblade I don't like is having to tap left and right to the get to the move I want. If I got just tap it on the touch screen that'd make things easier.

Anyway, I'm hyped. Thoroughly expected Xenoblade w/ Mechs, was not disappointed.

Only the look has changed. The UI is still basically Xenoblade, right down to the timed presses of B to fill the party meter and the "WARNING" bar at the bottom.

Exactly. And the look of certain aspects is what people have complained about, such as that oversized B button. :p

To be fair, Monolith Soft has done an absolutely awful job in the advertising department, and they always kind of have. They should really have the basic details first, instead of these "teaser trailers" and "uncut footage" that leave everyone to jump to conclusions.

It did look a bit boring but I think that was largely because positioning didn't seem to matter much in this demo fight. He was free to hack/shoot away against a fairly passive enemy. Give the player reason and incentive to move (which I feel Xenoblade did very well later in the game, Lorithia anyone?) and I think the battle system works quite well. Especially considering the emphasis of position on skill effectiveness.

Yes, and that is fine, I'm not disputing that. I am saying replying 'Have you played Xenoblade?' in response to questions about why this will be so good are not very useful. If the only way to convey what is going to be good is to tell people to play another game, it probably means the things about the game that will appeal are non obvious. So maybe some attempts at explanations wouldn't hurt, rather than just 'herp de derp play xenodudes dude.'

Which is not going to go down very well on a discussion board.

Enjoy the game guys.

It looks kind of interesting at first, being able to hop in and out of mechs like that, and the multiplayer aspect could be fun.

At the same time, the battle system looks almost the same as Xenoblade, which was bog-standard hotbar MMO fare. Not good, not bad, just kind of bland.

The UI is less intrusive than Xenoblade's.

visual-battles-13.jpg

Not saying it couldn't be improved, but it should've been expected that it would be similar at least.

And i'm pretty sure with the WiiU your will have the option of putting a lot of that stuff or all of it on the gamepad just like in MH3U on WiiU

God I can't wait to explore the world. I'm also super glad combat is EXACTLY how I'd want it to be.

Just need some actual answers on multiplayer now along with the story of the game, a North American release date and yeah... more exploration. :p

I haven't played Xenoblade and know basically nothing about it, so you'll have to explain to me what the appeal is.

The appeal is a huge open world to explore, with monster both small and massive to battle right there on the field. Battles are quick and active, which tends to make them fun, though the combat system is a bit simplistic.

But without playing it and getting that unparalleled sense of exploration and wonder at such a huge world, you just can't get it. Skyrim plays like shit too, but it gives off a similar vibe of impressive hugeness and player agency.

It's like nobody played Xenoblade in this thread

Some of us played it, and beat it, and honestly thought it was kinda overrated. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast with it, but compared to gears and saga, it left a lot to be desired. Considering that this is still carrying the "X" (or by extension the Xeno) name, I would have thought it'd maybe ramp up the vision and story again like the games before 'blade.

I mean, we still don't know much about it, and it could really be anything, but going with what they've shown so far, it's looking like 'blade with mechs. Which, I have no doubt will be fun, but still disappointing in terms of concept's scope and ambition compared to gears and saga.

I never played Xenoblade but am interested in this. But what the hell is up with the HUD? There is so much shit on the screen you can barely make out the action.

Every skill has a positional and height indicator now, as I said earlier. The uncut footage is just poorly demonstrated.

Stuff like character info, map, and enemy info should be on the gamepad imo.

Stuff like skills and damage dealt and taken should be on screen.

That's true, I wonder what, if anything, will be on the gamepad.

At the very least you think they could drop the minimap and put it there.

Remember everyone. The game's UI has changed several times already, so it will probably change again to feedback.

Considering the game doesn't even have a release date yet, I sure hope it does for the better.

I'm a stickler for minimalistic UI and I understand that this type of game requires a certain amount of information to be displayed to the player but as it is right now it's just not doing the game, in its current state, any favors.

Can't say I'm too surprised that many who haven't played Xenoblade are confused right now, but I don't blame them. Nintendo should have anticipated this and released a more suitable trailer.

I remember thinking Xenoblade's battle system looked confusing in the pre-release footage as well. Well, that was because most of those battles were from various parts of the game, well in the adventure so it's bound to cause confusion. The game itself will ease you into all the various mechanics of battle and teach you what the bloody hell is going on as the game progresses.

Loved what I saw but that UI...man...and the numbers are so egregious. That mech stuff though was awesome.

Still kinda looking more towards FFXV tbh.

I mean, excited might be a strong word, but the combat looks promising.

Seamlessness of transferring in and out of the mech was great. Haven't figured out why you'd want to get out of the mech though, but I'm sure they'll balance it/justify it somehow.

I'm hoping we'll be able to jump into a truck or tank and run enemies over in the middle of battle. That would be pretty cathartic.

Yep, I saw that! Interested to learn more about how that affects skills and output.

It's interesting to see that even though "Tech Points" were added in, not every skill appears to use them. I'm still digging through the trailer for all the little details however.

Which is my problem with the ui. XB's is easy on the eyes and really just nice to look at, X's is.. Ugly. Ugh. I really don't like it at all.

Everything about X so far is visually inferior to Xenoblade, save for the fact that it's in HD. The colour palette, the character designs, the monster designs, the UI... everything appears to have been dulled down and had colour and personality removed.

We've only seen the tiniest part of the game though so I'm not freaking out.

Gotta say it is funny, because this game has always been a Xenoblade follow-up. The gameplay clip didn't do much for me, but hell random clips of Xenoblade combat didn't do much for me either. Game was much funner to play than watch though, and I actually was meh on the combat. Put 60ish hours into the game and lost interest in the game, but I could see what people were enjoying.

I'm wondering if using a mech too much in battle will become costly. If you can lose limbs and parts, it would take a lot to fix it, unlike just healing yourself.
Maybe they got rid of fuel, but now you are limited in that aspect of using the mechs.

Welp, in Xenoblade at least, you could turn the minimap off, so the minimap, as well as some of the other UI elements very well may go, at the player's discretion.

I am baffled by the hype around this game. That footage looked like any number of Korean MMOs except that it's offline. Wait around until your guys' meters fill up so they attack the brain-dead enemies who don't react to any of your hit, and just keep waiting until they drop dead.

Someone explain the appeal of this game to me because I'm not seeing it. I admit to not caring about JRPGs in general, but the fever pitch around this game aroused my curiosity anyway. This is hands-down the least impressive Wii U exclusive Nintendo has currently announced, unless there's some layer here I'm missing. Is there some interesting story premise or something? I'm assuming there's some kind of hook that just wasn't shown in that footage.Someone set the record straight for me.

I have to assume this is only representative of fights with common trash. It would be unfortunate if everything is this one-sided.

The appeal to me is an RPG with mechs. I don't know that we really know anything else about this game right now but "smells like Xenogears, plays like Xenoblade".

Instead of forming your opinion based on a short gameplay teaser/demonstration of a product that is obviously far from finished, you could also just watch one the actual trailers that show much better what people loved about Xenoblade and why they are excited for X. This demonstration was quite obviously targeted at people who know what they are looking at.
