Good on you, New Zealand! Always good to see another country legalize gay marriage. Welcome to the club!

The United States should be embarrassed that it wasn't one of the first.

The human race should be embarrassed that this is illegal anywhere on the planet.

Nice, how many more countries left?
182 or 183, depending on if Taiwan is a sovereign state or not. China says no, some other people say yes, people making a list over countries say "Argh!". Lots more to do, in other words.

So, who's next?

New Zealand? You bet.
Canada? Yup.
The United Kingdom? Yes.
United States. Some states, yeah. Others are going to be a bit of a pain.
Australia? Well, um...yeah..we'll get back to you. It'll be at least 6-9 years, or possibly longer.

I'm sure Justice Scalia will be praying for the safety of the country, as should we all. Who knows what will happen to New Zealand now that gays won't be treated like second class citizens under the law? I can almost hear the throbbing cocks bursting from their leather thongs, piercing the air as they surge forth on a collision course with all straight couples and innocent children.

The thing is - as far as I can tell - legally this doesn't really change anything. We've had civil unions for gay couples since 2004 which afforded all the same rights except adoption (you could however still adopt as an individual).

Then alas NZ...

It's bloody shameful that Australia hasn't legalized same sex marriage, or even look like its going to anytime soon.

Great job NZ.

I think we tried to pass it in 2011 but the Coalition blocked it outright by not allowing their MPs to vote on it. Democracy my ass.

edit: Correction - Labor MPs voted to support gay marriage as a party policy, while the Coalition isn't giving their MPs a chance to vote at all.

I feel indifferent.

I just don't understand why it has been such a big issue. We more or less already did this with the Civil Union Bill. I support it, but I don't understand the people on Facebook who act as though this is some civil rights watershed moment and I understand even less the likes of Protect Marriage who don't seem to realise the horse has long bolted anyway. I guess there's some validation in gay marriage being recognised by the state as opposed to just civil unions, but part of me thinks fuck the state, call it a marriage if you want anyway. As long as the legal rights are already there you're golden.

Ireland is on it's way. We'll be having a referendum in about a year and a half, I'd guess. We already have civil unions, but this will be full marriage.

Nice to see some positive social issues getting momentum.

Eh, I guess it's one of those things. Like, if it's everything but in name, why not make it in name as well?

TRUE equality, I suppose.

you slacked around NZ. First to give women the vote but thought you could just coast on the civil unions for too long.

never mind, progress is progress.

there was a difference relating to children somehow. I forget exactly how, I think it was to do with when the blood parent passed away or some such.
Not a huge difference, but a tangible difference making it 'not equal'
