Next Gen Sonic Shots (56K warning)

Ninja Scooter said:
they need to redesign sonic, at least his face. From the back, the shots of him running don't look so bad, but his he's got that dipshit look on his face.
Well...if they do that i think we should have Mario wear his hat backwards...maybe actually give a wrench...yeah a wrench and a water back pack device, and who knows maybe some Liquid Draino powerups?

The Sonic we all knew and loved is dead.

That's pure nostalgia, I really liked Sonic Heroes is a shame that I couldn't never jump that bridge in that castle stage

I definitely agree that the environments need to look more un-realistic and "sonic-y". Sonic Heroes had the right idea in that regard.

Im excited for a new Sonic game, but, this really wasn't what I was hoping for. :-/

They should take a page from Nintendo, a side scrolling, 3D, next gen, wide screen in HD Sonic would be amazing.

Well, to be fair, I was referring to using the fur shading on his entire body to recreate the smaller spines. I would most definitely be against them changing the overall look by removing the larger stylized spines but the sleek style does look great in motion and it does make sense that Sonic would want to be aerodynamic. :lol

I agree with the comments one the environments though. At this point, these are more important to me than the actual Sonic model. Some of the original games' environments were absolutely brilliant. I would love to see some of them revisited.

Will next gen sonic still be 'hold forward to win' ?

How's that any different from 'hold right to win' in the 2D Sonic games? If it's not your bag, don't play it.

ugh I was hoping they would change Sonic's character model for next gen. The environments don't look so bad though, even if they seem out of place.

Looks good, only it'll have the Adventure series gameplay. Sega screws up again.

You guys know nothing. In regards to platform or design focus. Maybe wait to see what Sega say themselves about the game. Fur? Can't help you there.

It would be pretty funny if Sonic was secured exclusively for 360. That's like one of the few series from someone other than Nintendo that legitimately sells great on Nintendo systems :P

I'm Segagaga for this game right now. If it is indeed announced for X360, I'll pick an X360 up.

I'm that much of a whore. It's pathetic.

Interesting. Is it really being announced tomorrow?

First up was the announcement that yes indeed, there is a next-generation Sonic game in the works. Billed as a "re-invention" of the classic franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog will make its debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during 2006.

Presiding over the game's development will be none other than Yuji Naka, who, along with character designer Naoto Ohshima, created the original Sonic game for the Sega Genesis in 1991. According to Sega, Naka will "create the most intense sensation of speed ever experienced in videogames" with "an innovative combination of art, physics and game design."

"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."

I'm actually really really impressed by the visuals. It looks pretty neat. I think this was a LindBergh demo though.

The Sonic model is way too tall, and he acquired too much of a human skeleton in these pics. I'm down for that idea of a Sonic character, but the graphics do look neat.

- Sonic needs a belly - this anorexic look where his chest is bigger thain his, er "waist", ruins him as a character.

- the enemies have no personality and don't "go" with the Sonic character. Why don't they do cute robotic monkeys or something more suited to fighting a blue humanised hedgehog?

- likewise the scenery is realistic and Sonic looks out of place in a realistic setting. It's jarring and stops you from getting lost in the game world. ItNeeds more of a cartoony or rendered look.

+ the motion blur effect while running looks great

+ the idea of being able to be flung as high as you see in that first shot is great

Sonic Team needs new artists or a new producer - whoever is responsible for Shadow with a glock, Sonic's body or Sonic in a realistic-looking forest needs to be fired.

i'm very impressed. i have no problems with the sonic model.. the environments look a little too realistic, but they also loog very good, so it's hard to complain.

Can S***G get anything right? PS3 rev is in the development as we speak.

LATE EDIT:

we believe that the Xbox 360 will be the exclusive platform for new Sonic, with sources close to Sega outlining that much of the focus of the new game has been on the Microsoft console version. It is almost certain that this version will be on show at next week’s Tokyo Game Show, though reports of a video-only presentation have yet to be verified, with behind-closed-doors hands-on access deemed likely.

So finally the speculation can come to a rest. Though thinking about it, it was pretty much certain that Sega would use the Japanese show as a public debut. Remember, it was on show, being played in real-time by a human back in May. Expect a spring 2006 Xbox 360 date to be announced.

Check back tomorrow for a full update on all things TGS Sonic.

:)

Yeah this is definitely from the old trailer but I don't know if the trailer was ever made available for direct capture. The only verison I ever saw was off-screen. Anyway, it looks decent enough but I really wish they could come up with a way to eliminate homing spin attacks while still being easy to control. Also, please lower the character count and just focus on a select few (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and if necessary, Shadow). The real question is how Sonic Rush is going to stack up to the next gen console titles. If they can recapture the Sonic magic on the DS but still can't get the 3D equation right, maybe they should work on an ultra stylized 2D console version. Some franchises simply can't easily be taken to 3D.

Alright, they really need to start using fur shading. This will not do next-gen. I must say though that the screen where he is running full speed through the grass definitely has be excited for a traditional next-gen sonic game as opposed to this Sonic Riders business.

Do we really need FUR??? If they make Sonic look like Conker I will puke. Make everything else look sweet, do self shadowing, give him real time facial expressions with that Sonic attitude, add sweet fucking motion blur and let me rock it.

Somehow the Sonic series has gotten buggier and buggier as this gen went on. They should just put him out of his misery.

Fur shading? Most of you DO realise that Sonic is essentially a homage to western cartoon characters, and making him look realistic defeats that purpose, right?

So it's for PS3 and 360?

Man. I really hope these Rev announcements are just on hold until its official unveiling...

I never said that Sonic should have fur and I am well aware that hedgehogs do not have fur but have spines so fur shading could be used to render the spines. They can keep Sonic's overall style but touch him up a little. Make him look a little more next-gen. While I do not mind the current style that's used in the shots, it wouldn't hurt to make look a bit more detailed.

those shots look really good... for a sonic game, Can't wait to see more, hopefully they make a Sonic game that's not so linear, and with a lot of exploration etc.

Exccept the Sonic/Shadow stages were awesome. If they made that into a whole game and fixed the camera and controls a bit, how is that "screwing up".

At this point, I'd consider that the Sonic stuff shown so far is just a next gen demo, not a proper game.

are you just assuming it was lindburgh?

sonic games sell best on nintendo consoles plain and simple. so you can rest assure it is coming out for the rev.

Maybe, maybe, MAYBE Sonic Team can create a good, honest to god 3D Sonic for once. 5th time's the charm!

EDIT: This is the stuff I like to see... even though Sonic looks a bit odd. I remember being blown away by the opening CG (and first level) of Sonic Adventure. This reminds me of that in places.

come on now people, when was the last good sonic 3d game? (hint :( )
When was the last good sonic game period. Runs.

But seriously the series is so overrated. Its not really a game its just a way to throw pixels around a screen really fast. There is no real challenge to it. How hard is it to hold on to 1 of those 100s of rings you need to stay alive. It's like a rube goldberg machine, push a lever and let it play itself.
