I disagree, but eh, to each his or her own. :p

I'm betting that the Xbox Silent Hill 4 exists purely because SH3 sold less than half the PS2 version.

Hey, aren't those games current gen titles?

what's with current gen being called next gen? they've had a habit of doing that since like the fucking 3DO came out.

He covered that in the first post.

Actually sales look closer to a third overall. Isn't Europe SH's strongest region though, how did SH2 & SH3 perform there?

Well, Nintendo made games always have a strong tie ratio.

Does Nintendo really need 3rd parties.

One buys a Nintendo system for Nintendo made games.

Nope but it does make the PS2 sales all the more impressive in showing that is a system that caters to a whole range of tastes and choices...

<runs away>

I agree that it is impressive, and I pointed that out earlier. I just thought that the GC and Xbox numbers were impressive as well (as you agree).

SSX: Yeah it does bear resemblance to the N64's sales and userbase.

sonycowboy: I understand what you mean, my concern is that you don't understand my perspective. But, if you do understand what I mean and still find it unimpressive, that's your perogative. I just think it's an opinion that isn't shared by many.

What I got from your post is that the top 5 or so Xbox and Gamecube games sold very, very well relative to their userbase and relative to the top 5 PS2 games. However, once you get past that, the domination of the PS2 is total. And the performance of the remaining GCN & Xbox games seems rather weak.

Here we are almost 3 years past launch and the number of million sellers on both systems can be counted on two hands. At the same point the PS2 had 30 or so.

It's like cars and sports games being given the current year + 1.

I don't find the Cube or Xbox game numbers impressive in the least, except for Halo (and that mostly becuase it sold in the top ten for years after it came out). Here's why:

The comparison to userbase makes little sense when you consider that people buy the system for the games, not the other way around. More PS2s means more people wanting more games, which the numbers support. A few games with a high percentage sold into the userbase merely suggests that those are the games that people are buying those systems for (ie, the Halo Apaptor for my TV). It makes sense that a system with a smaller user base would have a few titles that are relatively high compared to its userbase becuase those are the few titles carrying the system. And it makes sense that the dominant console not have titles with as high a percentage selling to the userbase because it's not being carried by a small number of titles, but by a large number.

If we had TRST data for the Jaguar I bet we'd see a few titles with a huge percentage of the userbase as well. Tempest, anyone?

My favorite argument is that everyone thinks that the PS2 should be 3 or 4 times more of everything given it's userbase.

They should have 3 times as many titles with 3 times as many sales per title, which would be 9 times the number of overall sales.

Some Summary Numbers
------------------------------------------
Code:
Title Count	Format LTD Sales	Units per title
340 GCN Total 48,909,761	143,852
795 PS2 Total 200,094,682	251,691
462 XBX Total 62,424,262	135,403 (assuming Splinter Cell at ~1.5 million)

Without their top 5 sellers:
Code:
335 GCN Total 40,565,759	121,092
790 PS2 Total 179,042,536	226,636
457 XBX Total 54,418,708	119,078

So the GCN average is higher than the Xbox one because there's less games to choose from on the smallest userbase.

Interesting stuff.

Cube SC II vs. PS2 SC II vs. Xbox SC II is a prime example of user base not equating to proportional success.

Holy Cow. I thought Zelda sold better than that.

1.5 million's pretty good. Been out for a year and it's already beaten Majora's Mask worldwide (or matched it). Might stop somewhere around 2 million in the states and near 4 million WW (which most games in the series are).

And you completely ignore the other 500 or so games that prove otherwise...

Couldn't be that the series is fast losing its popularity could it? Nah. SH3 was better, btw.

Didnt Majora's Mask reach 3/4 million world wide? IIRC, OoT reached 7-8 million. Am I making this stuff up, or do I actually recall correctly? Does anyone know?

Id guess TWW is at about 3 million worldwide by now.

MM was around 3.3 million worldwide (1.6 in US, 600,000 in Japan, about 1.1 million rest of the world).

It did, but that's an especially good performance for a Zelda game -- as Anihawk said, most of them end up around 4 million WW.

I always enjoy bringing up this fact to Nintendo haters who claim that The Wind Waker is the worst-selling Zelda game ever; the reality is that as far as most of the series goes, it'll likely end up right on par.

Zelda hasn't even reached the end of its selling potential yet. When it drops to Player's Choice ($29.99 most likely) it should be able to do another 500K-1M.

Xbox is ~ 3 times less, GCN is ~3.5 times less or so.

The GCN/Xbox numbers are completely unimpressive.

The data I listed does not support your conclusion in any way whatsoever. The biggest reason is because of the 500k cutoff. It includes a disproportionate number of PS2 titles.

Total units for titles > 500k
---------------------------------
PS2 115,105,079
GCN 17,276,757
XBX 15,339,545

that above numbers for 500k does not tell the whole picture. The whole picture is total sales of all games. Which you do

GCN Total 48,909,761
PS2 Total 200,094,682
XBX Total 60,924,262

add in the 1.45 million for sc, and you get ps2 outselling xbox games at about 3.3 to 1, not 9 to 1. Why arbitrarily make the cutoff at 500,000, since the vast majority of games sell under 500,000.

You are such an instigator sonycowboy.

Do you like the Dallas Cowboys?

Regarding userbases, also don't forget that systems with higher userbases usually have a bigger percentage of casuals, people who wait until most of their friends buy the system so they can borrow games from them, etc.

As for SH3, Konami said that the series sold/shipped a million or so last year, which I assume would come mostly from SH3.
