Next Generation Less FPS more Platformers

There's more than enough 2D platformers, but 3D is woefully underrepresented. And nobody fucking buys the few that there ARE unless Mario is in it. So we're fucked.

the number of copies sold of said genre will decide what we get, sure some will try putting out different type of games, but if they don't sell we're back to fps land

I would love a 3D platformer renaissance. 2D platformers are doing great but where are the 3D ones!?
I'm guess 2D platformers can get away with looking "old school" while 3D platformers couldn't so much current gen. That being said, more money would have to be thrown at it and most of the 2D platformers this gen on non-Nintendo consoles are indie titles. Really, a lot of old school 3D platformers were fun but some of them look awful by today's standards, even when compared to the 2D one's.

PRobably plenty of FPS games, but maybe more hybrids. Something like skyrim, borderlands, destiny, deus ex, whatever. Lots of opportunity there.

I don't really feel like I have any lack of non-FPS games to play as it is. The only FPS I've played in the current calendar year was Bioshock Infinite and that game was amazing.

The only way that this will happen is when someone makes a popular third person competitive multiplayer platformer.

FPS have existed for ages, they became mainstream with popular multiplayer.

I would love more 3D platformers with large worlds/areas a-la Banjo Tooie. Galaxy and 3D Land were good, but I'm itching for something like Mario 64 that's exploration based and not timed.

We also need more JRPGs on consoles, preferably turn-based. So what we really need is for the 32/64-bit era market to come around again.

No thanks. I'm fine with the shooter onslaught. Platformer's aren't my cup of tea.

Unless it's an onslaught of Mirror's Edge 2/3/4/5/6/7/8 yearly, in which case bring it on.

You might here people on the internet say they want more 3D Platformers... but then nobody buys them unless Mario is in the title.

So.. why would someone spend money making a good 3D platformer only for it to lose money.

The cost to make one in HD isn't cheap.

First Next-generation game shown was Knack for PS4, a platformer:

Less FPS games will probably not happen anytime soon. However, there has been a shitload more platformers this gen already. Hopefully the trend actually continues.

Do we even know if Knack has a jump button? This kinda reminds me of how everyone was calling Kameo a platformer when it was first revealed when most of the monster transforms didn't even have the ability to jump.

FPSes and the demographic that support them can go play in a minefield. Get that trash out of the industry

Damn dude... shooters have been around for almost as long as gaming itself. It doesn't even matter if it's first person or not, shooters will continue to be popular for years to come. I don't see anything wrong with this.

Are big budget American action films ruining the film industry? No. So why should it be any different for games?

I've been digging platformers and the adventure genre lately. I think they'll both have a good presence next gen, but don't expect shooters to go anywhere. The more realistic things get, the bigger they'll be.

Hmmm, it's really the trends of the system age... 16bit and some of the next gen where platformers, RPGs, next up was GTA clones, after that FPSes... Who knows what the next will be. I'm hoping more strategy is included into games. Would love a strategical/puzzle Platformer.

I really don't see any reason why this would happen next gen.

I'd say with the rise of kickstarter and the like, more developers will be able to make the games they WANT to make but that will still be along side tons of FPS games. These games aren't going away guys. There's simply no reason for them to at this point.

Probably not going to happen to the extent you want it to. Big devs are probably going to play it safer than they did this gen.

Your premise sounds good, but there is nothing wrong with FPS's if done well. I do wish everyone would return to having and mascot, though. That would be sweet.
