From a business standpoint, Cerium actually did the right thing. On the bolded - sure, it could have, but why would Cerium pay them when they're happily doing it for free and volunteered to do it for free? Would it have been nice of him to give all the mods a bit of a little payout as a gesture when the buyout happens? Absolutely! The mods are however not owed a cent. They chose to work for free. They volunteered their time, no one forced them. They don't deserve any money simply for doing it.
He took advantage of the 2017 situation being an ambulance chaser, and got a shit load of followers to his site. He got people handling the moderation for free and as seen by the operational profits, he's making tons of money. He doesn't even post on the site barely anyway, so it's not like he's sitting there posting every hour somewhere.
He made giant money selling out and more yearly.
But the whole thing is like a dark cloud over Reeee because the site and users are amped up being Robin Hood, anti-right, anti-corporate, and anyone who drives a nice car is a greedy scoundrel who'd backstab you for a promotion at work.
I dont think anyone would think Reeee would sell out for $4.5M (+ annual profits) with the owner hoarding it all with probably 50 mods over the years working for free. So what happened is they all followed a fearless leader who was supposedly the saviour of ethics to come on over talk games, talk politics, an shit on money grubbers.
But turns out Cerium is just like the money loving asstards they all hate (profiteering sell outs who pay workers dick all). He's golden parachuting out the door and they'll never see that guy ever again.
