It absolutely makes sense he was desperate to sell. Era reached its peak he probably knew userbase and activity would get lower over the years. That media create sale, Nintendo and Xbox communities splintering off were writing on the wall. The next generation of kids using Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, Discord, Telegra. instead of forums didn't help. He knew he had to sell before the value continues to plummet. After all it was always a good business venture and opportunity, he did buy other shareholders out, he has crypto knowledge so he knows business and how to make a buck.

For a forum 6.5x is high (especially one with a crazy and unstable user base) and he was lucky to get that.

Totally agree, theres some legit great OT makers and posters with great heads on their shoulders when it comes to discussion. Angie, Loud Ninja, just to name a few. They always have great OT's and pretty great discussion on games. It's up to them to want to come back to talk about games again. But unfortunately the lie Reset and the internet has had in categorizing anyone with free thinking to be right/alt right nazi or whatever they call people put a barrier up that I dont think anyone will get over.

I dont remember there being a TOS that literally said the site was pro left or whatever you want to call it, and that any deviation or antileft view/opinion would be banned snuffed out. The thing that was scary that i saw over there was the witch hunt stuff during cyberpunk and that people like B-Dubs are still admins after literally scouring the internet to find dirt on someone so they could ban them. Then after the ban saying" they were a weasel we didn't see the treachery".

It's a fake sense of security and is why everyone is at each others throats in the world. I think nuking political was the right choice. This place has grown and regardless of what others call this place, its open discussion for anything video games. Hell there's a welcome trans thread here for anyone who wants to connect, come out, and just talk to the community without being judged if you align with a movement.
To me that is way more welcoming in my opinion.
To everyone at resetera, if you have an open mind, and want free discussion gaf is here for you. You will never be perma/banned for having an opinion as long as you are respectful. Which everyone here most of the time is which is why this place is way less stressful, and fun/relaxing to post on.
I seriously feel like Neogaf has been reborn and even though it may never be what it was at it's height, I feel the discussion and overall vibe of the place is the most chill place to be on the internet.

Because a lot of them are just average joes looking to chat about games. The weirdos and freaks are a small minority - the same way they were here until the mods cleaned the shop up. Difference is they actually run the damn site on era.
We want GAF to be a popular, accessible and happy place to talk about games, where people with differing opinions are welcome. I believe the way the mods run this site is designed to accomplish that, and I think the more people we have the merrier.

It's always harder to do morally what is right which is to forgive and move on. You can't live in the past, we need to be better and learn and keep going. There are a lot of people honestly that I know over there that are kind of stuck. Because the discussions with developers and people within the industry are still over there. But they cant say anything to the admin/mods or fear of getting banned? So what do you do?
If they come over here they are automatically categorized, and shunned by reset's community? So any close friends they have made may not even talk to them, or any outside community they have from branching out in discord or whatever may also reject them once they see posts from them on here?
Thats why we have to dispel the stigma, and you do that with unwavering forgiveness and kindness/acceptance. They truly just want to talk video games have a good time and have a positive community then let them come here. The journey wont be easy as reset seems to have a no tolerance for anyone posting on other platforms their opinion thats not aligned with TOS. Even if its in good faith, and not discriminative in any way, they will view it as such because it is not pro whatever.
So we have to be better. Even if that means taking mudd being slung our way. People on there just riffing on reset era, thats the easy thing to do when someone is on their knees from being kicked. Which is what has been happening over there. We need to show that we are here, we accept everyone with a opinion right or wrong.
Those value to me are the things that stand the test of time, and its hard to be above petty mudd slinging when the entire discourse of the world right now is doing that.
Just rise above it, through empathy, understanding can we move forward, and have a great fun community.
Once they start posting I THINK they will see that this place is not what people label it to be, and in doing so opens people minds about things outside of the internet, or not its their choice and freedom to do what they want.

I mean, I agree. I didn't want to come off as too aggressive since his post seemed well intentioned. But yeah, it is a bit of an illusion to really think of any of this as a community or "friends" since even the people you see on here a lot, ultimately you don't really know anything about them. It's all supposed to be very casual in my opinion. A "community" is like one half step removed from having 50 threads about brap being someone's kid that no new user would understand, and then before you know it you have celebrity mods promoting Turok remakes and we're half way down the road to hell itself.

I totally believe you can create clicks with people which can become a community if you have skin in the game. like if meet ups are still a thing here, and people want to LAN up and have tourney's and go to things like Pax East and post/create threads with info on the great time they had.
But that takes trust. I mean would I categorize online community being the same as a real world local town community? No. But it is people having discussion, and if those people literally meet up to do some cool shit and organize events then I think you could call it a community no?
I think sometimes I forget that what I think of community comes from being friends with tons of people where i Live who i met through going to LAN, then meeting them in college. Then we all hung out and played games, created our own forums for the LAN and had a blast meeting up at Denny's then playing BF2 until the sun came up. I remember the great CompUSA Bawls hunt of 2005.
God had so much fun with my friends, who now are married, moved away. I hope someday they join Gaf and I will recreate the Gamerzlan group and we can all play some oldschool LAN battlefield. Hopefully my place will be built by then and Ill host it. All who live near or want to make the trip will be welcome.

Furries were around during MLG so I dont know what your talking about. i met up with Gaf members at Pax east and there were not furries. Just people literally meeting up playing games and going to the late night meet ups grabbing drinks and going to panels.

Let's not forget that Era did become the largest forum for gaming - regardless of the right or wrongs of how it achieved that position. Gamers are naturally going to be drawn to a site that seems to offer the largest amount of members, or the inclusion of industry insiders. A lot of the far left, cancel culture, nasty, misogynistic bullshit wouldn't be immediately evident, and it's easy to ignore that shit if you just want to talk about Smash Bros.
However, it's hard to ignore just what a cess pit that site is now, for anyone who's a member. Cut some of them a bit of slack. Not everybody is guilty of being a purple haired Era screecher.

I don't disagree that they participated in what, to me, was a sickening example of authoritarians crusading against "authoritarians". That being said, it was probably the most popular gaming forum and it's easy to get caught up in the machine. Participating on that forum should not be an automatic disqualification from being here nor should a few times of weakness to be part of something come with total condemnation of their character. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's full of shit, the multiples he quoted are typical for the industry he's an expert in but there's a high chance he doesn't understand the business that resetera is correctly.
It's a standalone forum with no other revenue streams to speak of - this means it can not be categorised as a "media" company.
Lots of other popular forums are attached to a website that posts a steady stream of articles (news, reviews, opinions, etc, along with a youtube channel, social media presence, etc) and that acts as the primary driver for traffic, growth and engagement. For those types of companies the multiple he stated might be fine due to the number of avenues available for growth and sustainability but for resetera that quite simply isn't the case.
All things considered, the multiple it sold for is daylight robbery on the sell side.

One of the things we hated about Era members most around here is that they acted like, many times worse, than the people they lashed out against. I don't want to see members on this forum become like them. I get where you're coming from and I agree that it's a bitch to balance allowing someone to have a voice and figuring out when is a good time to get rid of them without feeling like we violated a value, but we should at least try.
