Despite appearances, Kemono Friends is one of, if not maybe the biggest, nerd anime of 2017.

As much as I dislike the budget meme in regard to animation, this was a low budget production.
Even so, is it CG models with cel shading or something? The way they move is strange.

It's exactly that. And it was produced by less than a dozen people.
My understanding is that this was supposed to be a typical throwaway low-budgeted Nexon-financed mobage advertisement, except it wouldn't even be that cause the game it was supposed to promote died before the show even aired. Turns out the director didn't get the message and actually tried.
Mentioned this the other day, how that show got overlooked I'll never know. Twitch chat would've been legendary.
