Peyton is playing. He said he wants to get win #13, and keep the win streak going into the playoffs. How long he'll play for he didn't say, but I'd be willing to bet he plays at least until the half.

Roethlisberger's rib injury not serious

Roethlisberger's rib injury not serious, but record run will come to end vs. Bills

Tuesday, December 28, 2004

By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger stands on the sideline Sunday after he was forced to leave the game in the third quarter with injured ribs..

Steelers hope 'road' paved in black, gold

It appears rookie Ben Roethlisberger will retire from the regular season as the quarterback with the best record for a season in NFL history.

Roethlisberger has bruised ribs, and it is extremely doubtful he will play for the Steelers Sunday at Buffalo, sources told the Post-Gazette. He will, however, be ready for their first playoff game Jan. 15-16 in Heinz Field.

The Steelers had no official comment yesterday on Roethlisberger's injury, other than to confirm it was to his ribs, the result of a late hit by Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs in their 20-7 victory Sunday against the Ravens. An MRI Sunday night showed no serious damage to Roethlisberger's ribs.

No quarterback in the history of the game can match Roethlisberger's 13-0 record as a starter in the regular season -- not just as a rookie but in any season. Jim McMahon was 11-0 as a starter for the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears when they went 15-1 in 1985. Bart Starr started every game for the NFL champion Green Bay Packers when they went 13-1 in 1962.

Roethlisberger long ago snapped the rookie quarterback record for consecutive victories, once held by Mike Kruczek at six in 1976.

By not playing in Buffalo, Roethlisberger will have set two more rookie quarterback records, held by Dan Marino since 1983. Marino completed 58.3 percent of his passes as a rookie, Roethlisberger completed 66.4. Marino's rookie passer rating was 96.0, topped by Roethlisberger's 98.1.

He also will become third all-time in the NFL among rookie quarterbacks with the highest average gain per pass attempt -- and the best since the 1970 merger.

Cincinnati's Greg Cook averaged 9.411 yards in 1969, Cleveland's Bob Waterfield averaged 9.409 yards in 1946 and the Chicago Bears' Zeke Bratkowski averaged 8.36 in 1954. Roethlisberger averages 8.88.

Dont count Maddox out. The Steelers backups are still better then all the teams youve been playing recently.

Edit:

Shit you wont even be playing they're backups. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1954028

" Coach Bill Cowher frequently has rested his regulars during meaningless late-season games in other seasons, but doesn't seem as inclined to do so now. That could be good news for the Broncos, Jets, Jaguars and Ravens, all of whom might need a Bills loss to get into the playoffs.

"We are playing too well to go up there and not win that football game," Cowher said. "It's not so much the record (15-1) as much as it is that we keep playing well."

I care for nothing else but my Jets beating the Rams. If we lose, it would be completely in character for this franchise, but then again, so is my completely unjustified faith in a victory. It's a win-win situation!

Anyway, St. Loo no longer have that scion of running defenses, a man, nay, a GOD, so steely quick and elusive that even greased monkeys shot out of cannons can only shake their heads in collective disbelief: Trung "Get yo' bell rung!" Candidate.

This guy's so fast, you can't even find a decent pic of him on the net! No wonder he carved up the Jets for about 578 yards a few years back. My favorite was the improvised lateral for like a 99 yard gain. Ah, good times, my friends, good times.

Broncos aren't making the playoffs, so I understand why you're trying so hard to put the Bills down.

Go Texans. Time to Stomp the Browns and finish the season with a strong .500 record, not to mention our first 3 game winning streak!

Injury report from Cowher's press conference:

OUT - Townsend....should be on the upside of questionable for first playoff game. Chad Scott may start this week.
DOUBTFUL - Bettis with an ankle, Haggans...should be ready for first playoff game.
QUESTIONABLE - Ben with bruised rib cartilage, Bell, Duce...Cowher hopes to start Duce.
PROBABLE - Keisel, Haynes, Hines, Plax

Cowher gave his, "We owe it to nobody but ourselves to approach this week like every other week" speech.

Interesting to note that with Batch on IR, Randle El is the next QB in line. Brian St. Pierre is only on the practice squad so they would have to drop somebody to add him. If Ben can't dress for an emergency role, they may do that. But I get the really strong sense that you'll see Big Ben in uniform on the sideline.

Damn Suggs hurt our chances for the playoffs. We need Pitt to beat Buffalo! As much as I hate to say it I'll be rooting for the Steelers and the Colts this weekend.

Suggs? Hell I think the fact that the receiver corps keeps dropping almost every ball thrown their goddamn way combined with the fact that the offensive line created ZERO holes for Jamal to run through MIGHT have had something to do with it as well.

They weren't going to play Ben very much even if he was healthy. There are certain guys you can't risk. I am hoping to see Staley play 2-3 quarters to get some rhythm back. Other then that Cowher is going to do the right thing and put everything on hold for the playoffs. Buffalo will win an easy game Sunday.

Once I saw that it was just bruised ribs I knew it was no big deal. At first I was worried it was his shoulder, that would have really fucked up our chances this year.

I have to say the whole toss a game because it doesn't matter that I see being talking about for Pittsburgh and displayed by Philly is a slam to the fans that come out to see their teams play IMO.

Bills deserve the playoffs.

Jets won't lose to STL...Buffalo will beat the Bergerless Steelers.

Peyton will have Marvin burn Champ Bailey. Multiple times, preferably.

Bills are favored by 9 to beat Pittsburgh.
Jets are favored by 3 to beat St. Louis.

Haven't heard anything on Indy/Denver.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. The makeup and mentality of this team is pretty tough, especially with how many subs have already had to play throughout the seaon. There's only maybe like 4 guys on the entire roster who haven't seen an actual offensive or defensive play from scrimmage. Tommy will want to play very well, as will Duce. Personally, I expect to see Hines and Plax play for a quarter. Hines might play more just cause he's Hines. And don't forget the underlying story of Cowher vs. Tom Donahoe and the Mike Mularky factor. I would imagine both teams would like nothing better than finish out their long winning streaks with another win against a familiar face. Has the potential to be a pretty entertaining game.

I think we would have a chance to win the game if it meant something, but they will all know this game means nothing while it means everything for the Bills. The players are not dumb, they know it means nothing and playing for pride is not the same as playing to get into the playoffs. I would love to be proven wrong of course. :D

Man that game was brutal. Faulk had like 180 yards at halftime, then he sat. Then canidate came in and ripped off 200 lol. Then the lateral to Az hakim, good times. Then it was K dub signing autographs on the sidelines DURING the game. :D

I think the rams will put up more of a fight than the jets expect. We just don't lose at home, especially in december.

Yeah, I was at that game, unfortunately, w/ my best friend who happens to be a Rams whore (but not the bandwagon "Kurt Warner" Rams whore, more the "Jim Everett we lose almost all the time but we beat the Giants that one time by catching the winning TD then exiting the stadium in one motion" Rams whore). I've been waiting since then to really stick it to you guys. Looks like I finally have my chance.

The Jets will not underestimate the Rams. They are too well coached for that. I do think that they will come out and smack you guys right in the mouth and pretty much manhandle the Rams on both sides of the ball though. And Curtis will have a huge day.

Page two with a cool piece telling you the playoff situation clearly.
:lol :lol Comedy gold.

Seattle can clinch division title if:
SEA win or tie, OR
STL replaces Steven Jackson with Chris Chandler at RB

San Francisco can clinch a playoff berth in 2009 with:
NEW OWNER + NEW FRNT OFFICE + NEW HEAD COACH + Julian Peterson - REST OF ROSTER + Unlimited CAP SPACE + as many NFC West opponents as they can schedule.

:lol

And that's not even getting into the bit about Dallas and Washington requiring time travel, the Bills requiring an immediate tranplant to the NFC, and of course, MARTY BALL.

Curtis having a big day? That's a given against this defense. But at home, the d always seem to make just enough plays to win. Plus pennington is starting to be known as a big game choker, so we'll see. Herm edwards said if the jets don't beat the rams, that they "don't deserve the playoffs." Martz and the guys will be fired up enough, but that doesn't help the jets any imo. I really think the rams will steal this one.

I think if Buffalo lose this game, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs anyway. They've been winning which is great, but the wins haven't exactly come against top class opposition. The ownings at the hands of Baltimore and the last NE game are still fresh.

OK they did beat the Jets.....but c'mon, it's the Jets! They have trouble beating good teams as well! :lol

# St. Louis can clinch division with:

1. Honest. No seriously. It could happen. Stop laughing.
2. STL win + SEA loss, OR
3. STL gets to play PHI's practice squad again, OR
4. Just like in my house, someone gave Herm Edwards' kid HULLABALOO for Christmas and it ... slowly ... drove ... him ... insane, thus causing NYJ to lose to STL.

:lol :lol

...
Damn, the Bills have a much tougher road to the playoffs than I thought. I didn't realize Indy was playing in Denver this week, or that Baltimore was playing Miami at all. Then again, if Kerry Collins can beat the Broncos in the snow throwing to a guy who didn't have a position last year, maybe Peyton does have a chance.

The Balt/Mia game doesn't have any effect on the Bills chances, they're already ahead of the Ravens. Basically, they have to beat Pittsburgh this Sunday, and either have the Rams beat the Jets, or the Colts beat the Broncos. If either the Broncos or the Jets lose and the Bills win, they're in.

Ah, I thought that the Ravens faced Buffalo early this year(Which would, of course, have resulted in a Bills loss).

They did, but if Buffalo wins Sunday, what the Ravens do doesn't matter. The Ravens would hold the tie-breaker if their records were the same, but Buffalo is currently one game ahead of the Ravens (9-5 vs. 8-6).

goddamit, Griese!
that article is just awesome

Jacksonville can clinch playoff berth with:

1. JAX win + BUF loss + DEN loss, OR
2. JAX win + BUF loss + DEN QB + one-finger Mile High Salute continuing to = actual number of Jake's playoff victories.

Pennington is starting to be known as a big game choker--maybe---only against elite teams (the Pats, Steelers, blah blah). He completely destroys mediocre defenses, plus he's 6-1 in domes w/ like 1 interception or some such other bullshit stat. The biggest question is how much is his shoulder hurting him? His passes looked even more floaty than usual against the Pats (some passes, it was like Michael Jordan had reincarnated himself as a football, the things had so much damn hang time). Biggest worry for me is the secondary. Unless we get at Bulger, we could be exposed pretty badly there (you saw what Brady did w/ all that time he had). Not having Abraham is starting to affect us (though Bryan Thomas has actually played his ass off).

Herm is right by the way. We don't deserve it if we can't win this game. The biggest x-factor for me is that Martz is the biggest moron coaching on any level of football, so maybe he'll pull one of those "go for 2" or "go for the squib kick" routines Rams fans sure do love. :D

Jets had a player-only meeting yesterday, 1st of the year. Apparently, even quiet Curtis laid into the team. The pain is coming, St. Louis! THE PAIN IS COMING!!!!!

The pain is coming? LOL it sounds more like the wheels are falling off the jets bus to me. But I agree, if you get at bulger early and often, you will win. Those are the only teams we have trouble with, teams with a stout d-line. But if martz pounds steven jackson, and keeps the pressure off bulger, the jets will go down.
