Bears drop three spots but Smith is getting this team respect! Look at what happens when your coach isn't Dennis Erickson and gets the team to play for you!

There are too many injuries but lots of respect for coach Lovie Smith. Next year the Bears will compete for a playoff spot, but this year it's scratch-and-claw every week.

And they are being apologetic to the worst coach in the NFL too (Erickson):

It's not fair to judge Dennis Erickson with the 49ers' talent. The 49ers have a bunch of role guys with only two elite players — RB Kevan Barlow and OLB Julian Peterson

I say Erickson and Niners management are getting everything they deserve. After all the hijinx behind his hiring, pretending to interview other candidates while the deal with Erickson was already locked, this is well deserved!

Jamal Lewis has stated that he will accept any penalty handed down by the NFL without appeal. Looks like he just wants all this behind him.

On another Ravens topic, there's starting to be a lot of talk locally about whether Kyle Boller was worth a first round pick. I think Baltimore fans are a little jealous of the success the Steeler's Roethlesberger has had. But Billick is standing behind Boller:

A couple of days before what could become Kyle Boller's most pivotal game, coach Brian Billick said the impact from the Ravens' second-year quarterback will extend far beyond Sunday night in Washington.

"There's no question, no doubt in my mind that Kyle Boller is the quarterback we have all believed him to be and is going to be our quarterback for a long, long time," Billick said.

Ravens fans may be forgetting that among other things the Steelers have a MUCH better receiving corp. If Boller had Hines Ward and/or Burress he'd be doing damage too. Steelers receivers are able to get separation, something key to yardage AFTER the catch.

And the Ravens have Todd Heap and Travis Taylor out with injuries.

Despite the fact that Boller has shown improvement and had some degree of success, I think the dissatisfaction among fans largely comes from the fact that he has yet to march the team down the field late in the fourth quarter to win a game...in other words, he has yet to lead the team to victory.

Personally, I keep in mind that it takes three years or more to develop an NFL quarterback, so I can be content with conservative "Dilfer-ball" for now. It would be nice, though, to occasionally see a glimpse of a quarterback who can put the the team on his shoulders and be the man.

Heap's a loss for sure... Taylor? I found him to be inconsistent as hell... sometimes he has great hands... sometimes... WTF? I'm not sure he's a legit #1 receiver, but he's all we have so.... Hymes is coming along well... and Johnson... has been spotty...

Finally, WTF is going on with McAllisters? The last two games he's been incredibly streaky, sometimes he on, sometimes he off, drawing penalties, etc....

Lewis won't appeal but will he make use of the appeal window to play in the game in DC on sunday night?

Our WR's wont be manhandled again in the championship game, hopefully, with the rule now being enforced.

Certainly didn't make a difference for the Colts in their rematch against the Patriots.

Even if they dont enforce the rule we have T.O. and Westbrook back to open up the field. Looking back, its amazing what Mcnabb was able to do with Pinkston as his #1 reciever.

oh I agree with that... I'd love Philly versus New England in the super bowl.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Lewis will play against the Redskins. The suspension will be for the Bills and the Eagles games.

And not having him against the Bills may hurt.... They need to get Musa back in the rotation this week. He hasn't played since pre-season has he? He and Chester ran very well during pre-season though. Musa reminds me of Jamal in that he'll look to hit YOU first instead of you hitting him, Chester is more of an all around speedster, but I remember that one game in pre-season when he and Musa were puttin it down.

I heard Billick on the radio this week saying that although Musa hasn't been carrying the ball, he has been playing on special teams regularly, so he's "in the flow of things" and not just sitting on the bench. I just don't know how much that will help him hit the hole when he needs to.

I'm very pleased by what Chester Taylor has shown so far. He has a knack of breaking tackles and turning a short run into a substantial gain. When Musa Smith was drafted, everyone pointed out how similar he was to Jamal in body type and running style, and he was seen as Jamal's likely replacement with Chester being the third-down back. That may yet be, but for now I think Chester is going to be the go-to guy while Jamal is out.

Agreed I'll think in the games that Jamal is out we'll get a steady mixture of the run between the two of them.

My superbowl prediction after week 5 is Seattle and New England. I'd love it if Indy or NYJ would make it, but let's face it, defense gets you to, and wins you championships and neither of those teams have great D.

*********** “Ray is actually where I got the idea,” said Jamal Lewis. “He did the same thing back in 2000. When he ended up getting off and not having to serve jail time, he gave over $2 million worth of cigarettes to inner city kids in Baltimore through his charity, which really shows what kind of guy he is. If I have any smokes left after my jail term is up, I’ll probably give them to kids, too.”

I wish we had Smitty...*sigh*

Hey DM:

Denver safety John Lynch, a former Tampa Bay Buc, answers questions about the Panthers, past and present coaches, and more:

Personal rivalries with the Panthers because he used to play for Bucs:

I think it was becoming a great rivalry, one where the Panthers had the better of the Bucs. There is nothing personal there. I'm just trying to win another football game.

:D

edit: Changed some of my picks (Changed NO to TB, SF to ARZ, and TEN to GB).

The Age of Simms begins! We're just getting him ready for next year, ladies. Project: Simms to Clayton is in it's testing phase....on paper it can not be stopped. We're going to officially dub this a rebuilding year to go 16-0 and win the super bowl next year and use our #2 draft pick (behind the Niners) to select a WR who will run like greased lightning, stop bullets with his teeth, and "get the glow" when pissed. Just give us the 2005 trophy now.

[/end delusional rant]

This is what happens when your team starts 0-4 when they could be easily 3-1....you start doing drugs. Notice the effects of this good $%%@ I'm on right now...

Ditto. Next weekend should be a nice preview.

Funniest thing about 12 hours from now is that Dolphins will be on hand to see the 18 consecutive game win streak be broken.

Wow Clinton Portis interviewing with alot of confidence... and basically calling Ray out after Ray got handled last week... hmmm should be a nice fight tonight... shame that this Beltway battle doesn't happen more often.

The Seattle Strong bit... hilarious.

Collins missing an wide open reciever for a touchdown then throws a possible interception on 3rd. Probably not a good idea letting the Colts go up 2 TD's to start the game...ahem.

You know I was gonna watch this Patriots game but after this TD drive... why bother? Miami has no chance. Think I'll watch the Giants/Cowboys game to see if Tiki's no fumble streak continues.

Helluva catch by Randel El too bad it got called back. Beautiful catch by Hines... and that one counted.

Holy crap, Jim Mora has balls! Then again, with that defense and playing Detroit, why not? :lol

Jim Mora has balls bigger than your head - he faked a 4th down punt after a penalty and then went for it with 4th and 8. Giant steel balls he has...

Ok im watching Atlanta play, I dont EVER want to hear that the media talks up Mcnabb anywhere near as much as they do Vick. Its insane that the guy can do nothing all day then all the sudden after he finally puts together a drive "he is sending a message to the rest of the nfl". The defense is what is winning them games, not Vick. I had to mute it, the ammount of Vick ass kissing in this game insane.
