I was surprised Wellwood got signed so late last summer. The man can clearly play in NHL and is usually good for 40 odd points. I wonder if the Jets will offer him an extension, even if he doubles his salary, he's still a good value piece for the team.

The signing had to be made. You can argue he was overpaid and that it's Burke's fault that the Leafs are in this position where they have only one good centre and that their only good centre demanded big money as a pending UFA. Whether he had goodwill with the fans or not and could "get away with it" seems like an irrelevant non-issue.

Grabo's contract seems to be the escalation of this trend of overpayment recently. Even someone like Neal, who I feel has earned it and I'm very happy he'll be here for some time, probably got a little more than he might have otherwise because we've struggled to find good wingers for so long. That's for a guy who is going to end the year with between 70-80 points, the contracts players like Hemsky and Grabovski got are far more insane. I have a feeling Leafs fans won't be thrilled with this contract in a couple years.
