Nice 480p 720p 1080p comparison

Unfortunately few 720p/1080p movies exist now and most are available only in Europe. Remember too that these movies are being compressed to fit on a regular DVD and not an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disc so the bitrate isn't as high as it will be in the future. I hear Amelie and Underworld are going to be released in WMV 9.

all of those images look shitty.

Exactly. That's not a great comparison, since it looks like the movie was upscaled to 720p and 1080p. If the movie originated in those two formats, then the difference would be exponential. I saw a better comparsion a while back, that compared DVD to DVHS which displays the full 1080i resolution (1080x1920) and the difference was immense.

Wasn't really aware of that...and by the way, Ameilie is great and all but come on i'm sure you Euros would rather have something else come out in HD DVD than that!

You need glasses. An upscaler can only upscale what actually exists in the source material. If you were to blow up an image from a 720x480 DVD all you would get back would be a 1920x1080 version of that same image. It wouldn't fill in the blanks for you. The arms of his sunglasses and the detail in his ear wouldn't exist in the first place so you wouldn't see them. In this example you see them come into focus because the source material actually has those details.

Ok, fine. In that case, then the images are just horrible captures. The reason I said they appear to be upscales, is because I've seen actual 720p broadcasts, and they didn't even resemble those captures. Granted, these are compressed JPEGs rife with artifacts, but the difference still should have been more noticeable. These JPEGs resemble the images taken from a Bravo D1 DVI equipped DVD player (not saying they are. The operative word is "resemble"). WIth that said, from what I've seen, people have to see HD images in person to really appreciate the difference in resolution.

:lol
No need for the hostility ass, but yes Amelie does rock but again would be better choices to show off the tech than a romantic/comedy/drama...
