Yeah at first I thought it was just badly modeled down there, but I feel like he did the shot on purpose to tell us it's Kaine.
Kaine as the protag would be too awesome to be true. Which at this point means it's gunna happen. This E3 is literally made out of dreams.

Kaine was my first thought too, but that was without that screenshot. Now, it seems even more likely.
The brief thought that it could've been Yonah made my heart skip. But that seems very unlikely.
And damn, I just saw Nier briefly trend on twitter...

Guys, Kaine is NOT actually an anatomical hermaphrodite (not that there's anything wrong w/ that of course). She's just inhabited by a male spirit. Jeez...
That said, I wouldn't say no to Kaine as protagonist. I really liked her.

Possibly, I mean, graphics in Nier wasn't hot either so this could just be a graphical issue. But still, it's something I could see the director doing.
Too be fair though, I'm excited for all theories.

There's also a specific sequence in the game where she's mocked for it. It's not explicitly stated but it's not very ambiguous either.

Did you know they originally had plans for an Ending E, that required you to restart the game from the beginning after the save deletion and play it all the way to the end again? They simply didn't have time to implement it.
It's why, when you try to use a deleted name, it tells you that the name has been lost to time.

Her story alone was enough to tell you she has an 'extra part' that causes her to be treated like a freak by her village, Grimoire Nier has her blatantly wanking it.

I never studied a bulge in this much detail before, but looking at this HQ video it's hard to see it as anything else. Could just be confirmation bias of course.

Wow, I either did not process that, or completely forgot it.
Not 100% explicit, but it certainly seems suggestive. And has pretty nice resonance w/ the subsequent possession, so I'll buy it.
I still don't think the in-game character's "bulge" is dispositive (maybe she had gender reassignment surgery?). Regardless, I am still 100% open to her being the lead in the new game.
