Ninja Gaiden II: The Official GAF Thread of Chaos

anyone else having problems with chapter 10 freezing

I just experienced this. It only occurred when I opened a chest with random or gold essence in it. Very frustrating, as it happened right after I got through the staircase of hell on Master Ninja.

I beat Mentor yesterday and started my Master Ninja run :D the single fights are quite possible even on MN, but there are so many of them that I don't know how will I reach the third savepoint! But the first chapters always look insanely hard, no matter which difficulty you play, so I'll just keep trying.

Congrats man. You'll find how easy Mentor was after you get a taste of Master Ninja. The fight to get the Lunar was really hard for me. After I go the Lunar, I went back and farmed yellow essence until I had a level 3 Lunar. That made the rest of chapter 1 and chapter 2 a lot easier.

Damn, I think I'm going to buy this game again and finally finish MNM. I was on the last boss and I just gave up.

Really, the last boss isn't all that hard. I found him a lot easier than zedonius. There's a trick you can do to not fight him with any of his adds (the purple van gelfs), but in some ways this can make him more difficult.

The Lunar fight wasn't a problem for me, but I have to admit that I de-spawned the archers after the karma farming point, they were just too annoying. To make amend, I did both optional fights for the LotGs and I had enough karma for a (mandatory) level 2 Lunar without farming. Now I'm on chapter 2 and I think I'm starting to "get" the combat. It's amazing how much you have to improve when you pass from a difficulty level to another. It's not just "more enemies, more damage, less money", you have to change your combat style and your tactics to be even more efficient and deadly than before, or you won't survive.

My only real complaint are the slowdowns. Really, I can take anything: bad camera, atrocious difficulty, IS spamming, it's fine. But if the game slows down, it fucks up all my timings, and I can't fight anymore. I keep dying because the game doesn't register my OTs, or I fail to do an on-land-charge because I press Y too early. It's frustrating as hell and if the whole game is like this, I don't think I'll ever beat this mode.

Does anyone even play anymore? I go for 2 months without touching it, but can't stand it. Return to the game only to get heartbroken at how unfinished it is. You promised me 60fps, Itagaki. And you never mentioned anything about no 720p or IS spamming ninjas.

Goddammit...

Issues aside, this is still one of my top titles this gen. So bloody and awesome.

Anyway, I am just starting my 2nd playthrough continuing w/ everything I had from the end-game. I notice there is no option to choose difficulty. Does it automatically select a higher difficulty? I assume it is 'cause almost everything is maxed or I'm just on the 1st stage, but I don't remenber the game being this easy...

Would be dumb to play through the game again at the same difficulty.

You can only do New Game+ on a difficulty you've already beaten. If you want to play Path of the Mentor, you need to start from scratch.

I've actually been playing this game again lately. Resuming my original lifebar/no ninpo/no items run on Path of the Master Ninja. Up to chapter 11 so far and very close to the infamous Rasetsu fight. I wonder if it will break me. :D

:lol

NG2 is one of the best looking next gen games. I don't care that it's a technical mess. The speed and the animations are just bonkers. Love to watch this game.

The only reason Sigma 2 doesn't have as much slowdown (it's still there - especially in co-op) is because there's a maximum of what, five enemies on screen at a time? Sigma 2 is for babbies. :D

Rockets are nothing btw. The real pain in the ass is the incendiary shurikens, but they are still manageable.

The system warrior pyscho is the guy questioning why anyone would want to play Sigma 2 at all because it's the "worse" version.

I can appreciate that both versions have their strengths and weaknesses, and understand why a huge Ninja Gaiden fan might want to play both of them.

That_fucking_sucks :(

How hard is Path of the Mentor? I haven't played the game since release, so it's not like I've gotten any better...

Seriously. Game is poetry in motion with someone who knows all the game mechanics. I don't mind Sigma, but Ninja Gaiden is about destroying your enemies. I don't want NG3 set up like Sigma with blue mist making enemy limbs disappear. I want to obliterate everyone and have their body parts on the ground after the battle is over.

Rockets and incendiary shurikens are MUCH more commonplace compared to Warrior/Acolyte. It's probably going to be rough at first, but once you learn how to deal with them it won't be so bad. This is basically where the game starts making you learn the intricacies of the combat system.

How I feel too.

Get used to abusing the game's I-frames. And I mean abuse them because the difficulty is relentless.

And then Master Ninja doesn't give a fuck about the combat system and just outright kills you no matter what you do.

Sorry for the huge bump here but I finally picked this up. The bosses are kicking my ass, namely the dude that you fight in a burning building towards the beginning that steals the statue. How the hell do you beat him? I die extremely quick and can't really block anything...

I'm glad this bumped out of nowhere because it's been on my mind.

First off, this is easily and by far the coolest OT ever created.

Second, I only have a PS3. Is it safe to buy both NGs on the PS3?

Can you Izuna drop Genshin in NG2? You can in Sigma!

I didn't discover this until recently, so I have no idea. :P

The Sigma games are fine, and superior to the originals in some ways (worse in others, depending on who you ask).

Go for it. Even if I still had a 360, I'd probably just keep playing the Sigma versions anyway.

It's Genshin, right? Just dodge everything, and after his combo ends, press XXXX or any combo you like. Same if he does his Flying Swallow.

Yes it is. There are differences, but you really have to have the 360 versions to know them, and they are fundamentally different versions of the same game. You could argue one is better or the other, but it's perfectably enjoyable and playable

Thanks. I just wanted to make sure there was no Bayonetta caliber porting going on.

Sounds so easy but it's kicking my ass lol.

Make sure to learn his animations/combos So you'll know when to stop dodging. Can't help beyond that. I used the Dragon Sword, but google says the talons are better for him.

No the PS3 versions are not even ports. Sigma is an HD version (gameplay wise, not cutscenes) with additional content, a new weapon (Dual Swords...it's all right) . Sigma 2 adds balancing and 3 characters, multiplayer, and a really stupid weapon upgrade system

Not sure if the 360 version is the same as the PS3, basically this is all you have to do

learn his patterns so as to evade, and when there's an opening, just spam izuna drop. He will block some and soon enough you will land one

Once you land one, just repeat it again. Don't wait. Just do it right after, it will pick up

I'm going to take a wild guess and say this is why I'm stuck in my fifth Test of Valor with no reward and no escape.

This invincible bastard is why we can't have nice things, Itagaki.

Im my view, why I can see why people prefer the sigma titles, I the difference between the two versions is enough to warrant purchases of both black and 2 on 360.

Ninja gaiden is one game series that never gets old for me.

Finished my complete Test of Valor, Crystal Skull, Dragon Sword and Acolyte runs for Ninja Gaiden II.

I only used about 15 continues, so for a Ninja Gaiden title that's nothing. It should have been 100, lol. But that's my prerogative for having picked the easiest difficulty setting despite having beaten Black on the default difficulty. I took the shameful way out this time, just warming myself up for the difficulty I'm going to expect for NGIII.

---

+ Combat takes a more offensive tone that it's predecessor but blocking and dodging is still paramount. Very little hack 'n slash even on Acolyte.

+ The Black Spider Clan and it's associates are still the best adversaries in gaming, let alone Ninja Gaiden. A.I. is always fully capable of killing the player at any time, but these guys make losing just that much more fun.

+ Decapitation and dismemberment is not only visually impressive but core to the game mechanics. A down but-not-out enemy can be more dangerous and it's made very clear what your options are at that point.

+ Some of the set pieces, especially Sky City Tokyo and Hayabusa village, are stunning backdrops for the violence.

+ New partially regenerative health system is generous but free from most abuse, unlike Bayonetta's very abusable system.

- Frame rate drops, slow-downs and studders are still semi-frequent even with HDD installation and post-patch.

- Off-camera rockets aren't fun to eat, one of the few places where the game takes away distinct visual input concerning an enemies' status.

- The armadillo boss that blows you up if you don't block after he's dead still sucks noodles. I don't care if I knew about this well in advance, it's crap game design.

- The lack of a level select option is puzzling and really unforgivable given the lack of a hub world.

? The last two Tests of Valor are disproportionately easy. I don't know if I should be thankful or not.

Also sad to note is that the best OP that has ever graced GAF is currently without any super-awesome images. Boo!!!

It's a good thing I got a haircut yesterday and I'm pretty much bald, because this Mentor playthrough is making me want to rip my hair off. Giant Bone Skeleton can go suck a dick.
Jumping YXY doesn't do enough damage with the kusarigama. Pretty sure I can get the "Indomitable Spirit" achievement today.

No idea how I'm going to finish this thing on Master Ninja.

Also, fuck you Tecmo and Team Ninja for not patching the game more than absolutely necessary.

Never forget. R.I.P, Team Ninja.

After playing NG3, I decided to not play NG3 and play NG2. Currently on chapter 3 and enjoying my replay. I think I got to chapter 10 or 11 when it first came out before I quit. I think NG3's horribleness will give me the strength I need to finish this (superior in every way) game.

If you never played chapter 11, you're missing some pure action gaming bliss. I still have savegames for every checkpoint of chap11 on Mentor and Master Ninja difficulty, just to replay it whenever I feel like it. Totally worth suffering through all the bullshit and problems of NG2.

The issues aren't so prevalent on Acolyte and Warrior. This unpolished mess is still fun as hell, for some weird reason.

Started replaying it as well in anticipation of NG3.I don't really care about NG3 anymore but the game is really fun!

I am playing it on path of the warrior this time doing the tests of valors and getting the missing skulls.I was 22/30 when I started, now on chapter seven I have 3 more to go.I'm also using every weapon I can since my first acolyte run was DS only (big, big mistake).

Having a blast (again) although this time I feel like the game has way too many techniques for each weapon.Well that must be just me since I went from DS to every single weapon.

I've a game save for every chapter, but I need to do so on one of the better difficulties than I have them on now (Acolyte, lol). Chapters 1-2 & 11 are by far my favorites. Visually they are leaps and bounds more pleasing to the eye than anything else Team Ninja had in this game. There are a few other chapters that are good, but some are downright boring (Venice). Even though the mechanics are great on most every level, I'd still rather be able to play my favorites on demand.

Like several others here I'm going to hunt down a copy of NGS2 instead of NG3... what a sad predicament I'm in.

saw this thread and thought it was for the NES game. I am disappoint, GAF. I can't remember when I stopped playing this game exactly, but I remember it had something to do with either a boss fight I couldn't beat, or dudes from off screen hitting me with rocket launchers. >_<
