Nintendo console/handheld owners: a question

What's the big-3 (Mario/Zelda/Metroid) proportion of your software library?

I've had Gamecube forever, and it looks like a DS won't be too far away (unless they shaft Canadians on the price drop -- $160 or bust), but it always seems like the games most people care about for these machines are Mario/Zelda/Metroid and everything else sort of falls by the wayside. Funny thing is that unless you count Wario, I don't think I own a single Mario-themed game for my Cube... and no Zelda/Metroid.

On the GCN they make up 10/18 games. On the GBA they make up 8/9. On the DS they make up 1/2. So they make up almost 2/3 of my current gen Nintendo console/handhelds games. :lol

Pretty low. I buy so many cheap games that I'd never buy at full price. My nintendo published to 3rd party ratio is probably 30% nintendo 70% third party. But the actual money is probably spent 50% Nintendo 50% third party.

gamecube: 30 games - SMS, MP 1, LOZ:TWW, LOZ Classics disc, and Wario Ware if you want to include it.

DS: 10 games - SM64 DS, MP:H demo, Wario Ware if you want to include it.

GBA: 8 games - Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart Advance, Wario Ware twisted

For me the big three franchises are not the only reason i play nintendo systems.

I don't play my GBA much, but I have no Mario (I would if they ever made a new one, I had Mario Kart if that counts), 1 Zelda and 2 Metroids. I have 2 Castlevanias, Advanced Wars, and 3 RPG's. So basically I just want good games, I don't care the license behind it.

Gamecube, I have tons of games. Lots are Nintendo, some aren't, I don't own the system just for Nintendo products.

Hm, out of my like 37-40 GameCube games, maybe 12 to 15 are either Mario, Zelda, or Metroid. On GBA, uh, not even going to bother. Probably half and half. On DS, I only have Mario 64 out of my 7 or 8 games.

I always get the primary Metroid/Zelda/Mario titles for whatever Nintendo console (though I don't have Four Swords or MP2 yet), but I have none for the GBA. However, I'll probably end up grabbing Minish Cap and the GBA Metroid games in due time.

I do have Mario Golf and Mario Kart for GC, and I'll probably get Mario Tennis and Paper Pario, but I doubt I'll ever own Mario Baseball. There's a remote chance I'll pick up a Mario Party title if it can get it super cheap.

I have MP2 which I ordered for $20 from EBGames.com for my brother and have never played. Otherwise it's all third party. I had Zelda TWW, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart DD, MP1 and Paper Mario but didn't keep them.

I buy too many games for those three to make up any noticable percentage. Metroid games are must-owns for me (except Hunters; I can't even begin to care). I just realized I own no Mario games. Whoops. I probably wouldn't own any Zelda up to this point except for Wind Waker if Zelda:CE wasn't free.

Edit: Oh, are we counting Mario spin-offs? I do have Mario Golf GC/GBA, Mario and Luigi, both Paper Marios, and Mario vs. DK.

Edit 2: Shit, I keep forgetting I own the Zelda: Oracle games - which is sad, because I liked them better than Wind Waker.

GC: Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Golf, Paper Mario 2, The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 14 games in GC library total so 5/14 = 35.7% of my library.

GBA: Super Mario Bros., Mario and Luigi, Yoshi's Island, Metroid Fusion, Mario World out of 9 games so 5/9 = 55.6% of my library.

Quite a high proportion as I still have more GC and GBA games of those franchises I want.

I've got the big 3 for each Nintendo console I've ever owned. It's partially out of force of habit, but also because the games are pretty much always aces.

On GCN, of my 40 games, about 7/8 of them are big three games (Prime, Prime 2, Sunshine, Wind Waker, Mario Kart, SSBM, Paper Mario, and if it counts, OOT Master Quest).

On GBA, of my 15 games, 6 of them are big three games (Mario and Luigi, Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission).

On DS, of my 7 games, 2 of them are big three games (Mario 64, Prime Hunters Demo).

For the most part, most games I have on my Nintendos are third party titles or "non-big three" Nintendo games. Isn't that the way it is for well...everyone?

GC - Paper Mario, Super Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Zelda: TWW, Collector's Edition, and OOT, Mario Kart DD = 8/26

GBA - Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, Zelda: ALTTP, Mario Kart = 7/12

Yea, my GBA percentage is pretty damn high, but GC isn't, espeically considering two of those Zelda discs were free.

Of my 14 GBA games, 4 are from the holy trinity.

Of my 37 Cube games, 13 are from the holy trinity if we're including Smash Bros, and 14 if you include Wario World.

Of my 7 DS games, 2 are from the holy trinity. 4 if you count Yoshi and Wario.

Across the NES, SNES, N64, GBA, and Cube, the percentage is low.

I actually purchased my first real Mario game just the other week (SMW) during my classic games collection restocking. I also snagged gold Zela 1 & 2, just for the hell of it.

For the contemporary systems, for which I would have purchased games new, only Metroid Prime and Fusion meet the criteria.

First off, it's $170, and I concur on the shafting...but Amazon has it for $150 if you don't mind Platinum (I'm so tempted it isn't funny, but I'm waiting for a possible Boxing Day deal).

Nintendo DS System - $149.99 (33% Off)

They also have Yoshi for $30 and Mario for $33.

Anyways...

GBA: 9 Games
Mario, Mario, Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Mario
Ratio - 2:1

GCN: 34 Games
Zelda, Zelda, Zelda, Mario, Mario, Mario, Mario, Metroid, Metroid
Ratio - 4:17

Yeah, it's kind of bad...worse if we're including Luigi/Wario/Smash Bros.

Oh ehm. My Mario/Zelda/Metroid ratio is quite high. Especially on classic systems where around half my games are Mario or Zelda (fe SNES: 4*Mario, 1*Zelda, DKC, F-Zero, Terranigma ^^). On GameCube it's a bit different though, of course there are quite a few Mario games (6, no party, no sports ;))

Smash Bros
Luigis Mansion
Wario World
Mario Kart
Paper Mario
Super Mario Sunshine

, Zelda games (4)
Zelda The Wind Waker
Zelda Ocarina of Time/Master Quest
Zelda Collectors Edition
Zelda The Four Swords Adventures

and Metroid games (2)
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2 Echoes

but these are just 12/26 games so even without Mario, Zelda and Metroid it would be a good collection of games to boot :). But Mario and Zelda are really important to me and I don't want to miss them in future generations. When talking of Mario games, I'm counting the whole Mario universe. Including Wario, Yoshi, Luigi but excluding Donkey.

Lemme see...

GameCube
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time Master Quest
Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bonus Disc

Game Boy Advance
Legend of Zelda: The Link to the Past
Metroid: Zero Mission

Of the 60-65 GC games I own...

I have 2 (well 4 if you want to be anal) Zelda's:

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Master Quest

I do not own or have ever played Super Mario Sunshine, but I do own:

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Mario Power Tennis

And I do not own and do not like any of the Metroid Prime games.

well, my GBA collection is huge but I have most of the mario/zelda/metroid games. because that's when they were best.

on GC, just the Zelda collectors disc. I haven't enjoyed the big 3 on home console, which is the primary reason the GC isn't all it should be.

Using my IGN list for reference...

NES: 13.8% if one counts SMB and SMB/Duck Hunt. Would've been a somewhat higher percentage when there weren't 10+ year old garage sale games factored in.
GB: 25%
SNES: 33.3%
VB: 28.6%
N64: 16.7%
GBC: 50%
GBA: 22.2%
GCN: 28.6%, but this counts both Zelda emulation discs.
DS: 33.3% if one counts First Hunt.

Certainly if we were counting Nintendo published (or developed) games in full the percents would be much higher.

MY GC top three is Metroid Prime, RE4 and SOAL or Wind Waker.

GBA top 3 is Zero Mission, and Wario Ware games. I have no zelda gba games or mario, just Mario & Luigi Superstar.

DS is Meteos, Kirby and Mario or Zoo Keeper.

So 1 mario, 1 zelda, but lots of Metroid.

Get both Fire Emblems and WARS. Screw everything else.

gba (12 total) - 2 zelda, 3 mario, 1 metroid
gc (14 total) - 2 zelda, 1 mario, 2 metroid
ds (9 total) - 0 zelda, 1 mario, 1 metroid (demo)

I do not own, nor will ever own (unless given to me as a gift), any Mario, Metroid, or Zelda games for GC.

I love how Nintendo hater insist on ignoring great games and then say GameCube has no great games. :lol

Hey, F Zero GX is great. I probably would have loved Unity too if it wasn't cancelled.

Beyond that, though....

Thanks for the info. That is SO tempting...

Yeah Mem, good info, and tempting.. but sales on DS stuff haven't been unusual, so I'll probably hold out (like you) either for Boxing Day or until someone knocks $10-20 off or throws something good in at brick-and-mortar retail.

Super NES: 1 out of 11 games total
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Game Boy Advance: 3 out of 24 games total (2 GB, 6 GBC, 16 GBA)
Donkey Kong (Game Boy)
Super Mario Advance
Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2

I would love to wait for a Boxing Day sale, but I'm thinking of picking it up for the wife for a X-mas gift, so Boxing-Day is a day too late. :lol And that is by far the best deal I've seen yet in Canada. What to do? What to do?

CompuSmart had this deal a couple of months ago.

Well if you're waiting for Christmas, hold off. Places like Future Shop, Best Buy, and I think even Wal-Mart have offered discounts or add-ins on the $200 pack. I would be surprised if you didn't see some sort of discount or value-added deal somewhere before Christmas.

EDIT: And yeah, fuzzy's right... although if you listen to me, you are taking a risk -- I mean, maybe you won't find one for $150 anywhere...

I buy alot of shit on the cheap so I have about 61 GC games of which 17 - 18 are Nintendo published, of that 2 Metroid 1 Mario, 4 Zelda

for my GBA I have about 33 - 34 games 10 of which are published by nintendo the breakdown for that is 3 metroid 4 zelda no mario

I totally missed that deal. I figure most places will drop the price to $170 now, WalMart probably about $165. So the $150 looks good, but SickBoy makes a point - there's still several months left before X-mas, so the chances of seeing a similar deal (or maybe a better one with a bundle) for the holidays are probably pretty good. I'll have to think about it over the weekend.

I am, at the very least, expecting that we'll see some Christmas deals revolving around Mario 64, Wario Ware or maybe Kirby. I think there is a good chance that we'll see a deal that will more or less make the DS itself $150 or less.

It is a risk waiting, but at the same time I don't think that the DS will suddenly explode in the US in the next 4 months and thus I think we'll be seeing some good bundling at places like Future Shop and Wal-Mart.

If you're looking for one before Christmas, you are, indeed, taking a risk by waiting. I'd go out on a limb and think that Nintendo will have some serious work to do this Christmas in order to create a huge launch for their half-assed WiFi service (No Battle Mode = No Sale...until Christmas) and I have to assume that they will be working hard to do so. Who knows, we might even see a DS/Mario Kart/USB Wireless Adapter bundle or something of that nature. I just think that, with the current sales of the DS, jumping on $150 is a tough decision, but I doubt we'll be seeing the equivalent of anything extraordinarily cheaper before Christmas.
