Nintendo Direct on April 12 (3PM PT, Switch/3DS, mainly Splarms)

Ultra Street Fighter 2 releases May 26. The way Nintendo seems to be doing things they won't release ARMS that same week.

I'm thinking it'll be May 19, June 2 or June 9 (right before E3)

Arms wont be May, there's street fighter 2 on may 26th, so i expect nintendo will want to give that a few weeks breathing room (especially as they are effectively publishing it in europe)

The one thing working against a May release is that NoE is distributing SF2 in Europe and that releases in May. Some view it as odd for Nintendo so compete with themselves with two fighters around the same time.

If Nintendo delays ARMS for a port of a 25 year old game I would be disappointed

To be fair, Splatoon wasn't worth $60 at launch either.
It was though. A mechanically brand new shooter rolling out features to a new audience was brilliant, as the sales in Japan show, even if the map limit sucked. The game was called doa because Nintendo didn't have a shooter fan base. Turns out it's the freshest 3rd person shooter since Vanquish. If you didn't like it, that's fine, but the game was well worth the asking price, especially with the length of support it got.

Good to see that the days of seemingly out-of-nowhere Direct announcements are not behind us. :)

I'm hoping for at least one new game announcement for Nintendo Switch, and more information on Pikmin 3DS and Ever Oasis. Perhaps some BotW DLC Pack 1 details, as well?

Sales beg to differ.

I'm not arguing sales, which were deserved. I think it's fair to say that the game was content light. To some degree it still is, but it doesn't cost $60 anymore either.

ARMS seems even more problematic given what we've seen so far. I would think you might try to be a bit more aggressive on the pricing given that fighting games are not sales monsters at the moment.

Why ? You already know everything there is to know about Mario Kart 8 DX.

The online features could be better explained, and it would be cool to see more of Battle Mode in action.

But also to build hype. These are marketing tools... not just newscasts.

How can ARMS be $60 next to Zelda at $60? There's no way it can be more then $30

Is this trolling?
Sure the value is probably nicer for Zelda but different strokes for different people, they are complete different genres too.

Your comment makes no sense at all that would mean all games with less playtime/content than a huge adventure game or (j)rpg should not be sold for 60$ wich is pretty insane.

Gonna spend the next two days praying that Stardew Valley gets bumped up to Spring.

Impossible, but I need it...

plz stop with the 3ds. imagine how fucking exciting the switch would be if all the shit they've announced for it were actually coming to the switch.

The 3DS can live as long as it gives me Ace Attorney and Kirby games.

Great time for a Direct since that's the same day my Switch is arriving. Give me release dates!

Nintendo has their patterns, but they aren't hard rules. While not being the same genre, A Link Between Worlds, 3D World, and MP: Island Tour released on the same day in the US.

Which is all well and good, but there's not enough there to dedicate a direct to unless they're going to announce additional content post launch.

Plus, we already have information about the new features in a 5 minute video out in the wild.

It's multiplayer game. This the same silly argument the multiplayer games with single player point aren't worth their price point. Hint: the average multiplayer game lasts a player much longer than the average single player that's when open world massive games are the norm right now to justify their worth.

Nah. The 3DS has a few good years left in it. No need to kill it early when the Switch userbase isn't even 5% as big.

At this point I think a new 3DS revision would be nice at least. "Newly New Nintendo 3DS XL New"

They are going to give it software here and there (new EAD/EPD titles will never happen and haven't in a long while) but they aren't going to push it with new hardware.

Let's not get crazy now. It's got another fiscal year and then I'm sure those devs will start putting in work for the switch, if they haven't already. The 3ds is ancient, even with the new upgrade, do you really think they'll waste resources on a 2D Zelda on the 3ds, when they can just use the current engine on the switch? They already have a crude proof of concept, reusing BotW assets and just worrying about a story and translation would be way easier than "reimagining" 2d Zelda for the 3ds again. Plus, who wants to go back to a zelda game without physics interaction?

When has Nintendo ever held back game announcements for E3? Every time in the past the general sentiment has been "well wtf are they going to announce at E3"

I wouldn't expect anything substantial. If there is an announcement, it will be either small games or remasters that would get buried at E3.

Right on time!

I agree.

I agree on the first part but this is just wrong.

Makes no sense from a business perspective. Makes absolutely sense from a gamer's perspective :(

Sorta. 3ds is going to die down. It just is, it's old tech. Pumping out games, just waiting or that to happen naturally, is just kneecapping the switch. Also makes the switch sort of pointless. What's the point of having a hybrid if you're not going to support it that way behind the scenes?

It just shows, to me, hesitation from Nintendo to jump fully in which is worrying after the Wii U.

2014 was the last year they did that for Wii U. 2015 was the last year they did that for 3DS. 2016 was all-Zelda.

Man, you're going off on a crazy Zelda tangent when I didn't even mention a Zelda game.

Yes! Nintendo Direct, best news to wake up too.

My predictions cause I'm hype:

ARMS - Mid-May release, info dump, new characters, modes, etc

Splatoon 2 - Early July release, another trailer showing multiplayer and single player as well

Slight Online features will be detailed and a mention of a Switch system update with actual changes to the UI and how to add friends.

3DS news will entail of that Fire Emblem game, Pikmin 3DS, and maybe Ever Oasis.

It's not like releasing a 2D platformer Pikmin is kneecapping the Switch. There's not much Marquee games from Nintendo for the 3DS other than Fire Emblem Echoes. So I don't get the worry, especially when big games for the Switch got announced for this year during the January presentation, and E3 is just around the corner.

Looking forward to this! Hope Nintendo Directs become a regular thing once again now that the Switch has released. I really don't understand why they keep announcing Nintendo 3DS stuff too, even tho there's a few big titles left to release on the thing like the new Fire Emblem and that ugly weird Pikmin spin off game.

Nintendo has always supported both their home console and handheld system. New 3DS was released only two years ago.
