Nintendo Downloads - April 2015

Hey guys! I'm looking for a new 3ds game to play. I can't make up my mind though and I want to hear some opinions. I have the normal, Fire Red 3DS for reference

I'm looking at:

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Pokemon Omega Ruby
Monster Hunter
Majora's Mask

Fire Emblem looks cool, but the only turn based RPG I've ever played is Pokemon. Is this a game someone like me, whose completely blind to the franchise, can play?

I pretty much know what to expect from Pokemon. Is it at least harder than Y? I'm mostly on the fence because I kinda want a challenge from Pokemon.

I played the Monster Hunter demo and I liked it, but the controls were a bit hard to get used to. I think that there is a lock-on, but I couldn't figure it out. Should I not bother and just get the New 3DS? It has the shoulder buttons and the stick, so it should be way better to control.

And finally, Majora's Mask. The time mechanic is a big turn-off. I don't like being under a time limit in games. However, I know about how you can reset time and also how there is a schedule that makes playing it a bit more manageable. I am thinking that the time mechanic is something that it's not? Like do you have to rush around to get stuff done? It seems like a really cool game.

FE:A has been praised as THE beginner-FE. So yes. That's why it was so successful.

Don't play MH4U on your old 3DS.

I originally played Majora as a kid but used a guide so it was a whole different experience for me to play it again in this re-release. Incredible, truly moving game. The 3D Zelda gameplay in this game has only been since matched by Skyward Sword for me, and the quality, breadth and depth of the sidequests is unparalleled in any game for me. I would recommend you play Ocarina first if possible. The two games are very different but MM kind of plays off of some ideas and characters from OoT.

Also, the time mechanic is nothing to be concerned with. It absolutely is manageable and just takes getting the hang of, there are many ways to make it more doable in gameplay, and it is an integral part of the magic of the game.

Cool! And yeah, I figured that MH4U isn't really made for the old 3DS

Thanks for the response! The game really seems well-put together and a must have for the system. I shouldn't be worrying about the time mechanic that much as I feel a lot of people feel the same way, except that the game has very-high praise meaning it must be done right.

While I definitely thought that ORAS were a bit easier than the originals, it's nowhere near as bad as in X an Y. This is with me using EXP Share, too. There are a few areas that I think ORAS are kinda weak (mostly lack of Emerald content, plus Delta Episode being super fetch questy), but they made some nice advances such as DexNav, sneaking, and giving you Fly as a key item. They haven't completely redeemed Gen VI in my eyes, but they do manage to at least address most of the worst problems on some level.

I agree on FE but I'll add that there's a demo if you want to try it. I ended up buying it based on the demo but it's a really long game and it gets a bit difficult so I never finished it.

I don't 100% agree on MH though. I do use the C-stick a lot, but not nearly as much as I expected in combat because the monster-look is usually faster. I'd argue that it's much better with the C-stick, but not unplayable without. Again, the demo should help decide.

I'm playing MH4U on my normal 3DS XL and not having a problem. If anything, I'd want to play it on a N3DS for the higher framerate.

amiibo Touch and Play would be neat if I didn't already own every single one of the games it contains, heh.

Though I've heard rumblings that everything in there is 60Hz, even the stuff we got on VC at 50Hz..

Edit: It's true. Courtesy of the official page, "The games assigned are the US versions."

So whilst Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Kirby's Adventure on VC are terrible 50Hz versions, their demos in this are not. Sigh.

Edit 2: And 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure is on sale despite not being part of Kirby Week 2. Interesting.

FE: Awakening is a terrible game. Randomness plays way too big a role for a SRPG, the uninteresting story just goes on and on, and the map/mission design is boring. Oh, and there's a ton of overpriced DLC, including stuff like maps for easy money and XP. The only reason it gets that much praise is because of the waifu/husbando stuff, so unless you are into that, you should avoid it.

If you liked the demo of MH4, you'll love the full game. The series has a high entry barrier so if the demo clicked for you, you're sure to spend hundreds of hours in the game, or at least that's what happened with me and 3U. The only problem is that the games pretty much require the use of guides. Not so much on how to beat the monsters, though I always read a monster's wikia page after I've defeated it to learn all its habits, but you'll need to search which monster gives you which drop, which element/ailment it's weakest to, where to mine/gather X material... Fortunately, all this data is compiled and easily searchable, e.g., Kiranico for online, Ping's DEX for offline.
I'm playing on an old 3DS XL and while the camera controls did take a bit of getting used to, it's fine now. You activate the lock on by pressing the monster icon on the touch screen after you've spotted a big monster; the question mark icon will turn into a monster icon and when you tap it, a cross-hair will appear over it. Then you, depending on your settings, press the L button once or double tap it and the camera will turn towards on the monster. Note, that the camera doesn't follow the monster, so you'll need to tap the L button each time the monster moves out of sight.

This is complete and utter nonsense. You're free to not like the game but don't present this as fact, please.

Of course it's my opinion since I wrote it and it's about liking/disliking something which is subjective. Pretty much every post in this thread is an opinion. Do you want me to add imo at the end of every post? Don't be that guy.

In terms of loading and frame rate, MH4U performs roughly the same as 3U. It does stutter in the cat villages but that hardly matters since you never have to fight a monster in those areas and only visit them briefly.

FE: Awakening is a great game. Opinions eh?

Well it would be great if you could elaborate a bit more. Just saying that a game is great won't help Karspankey make an informed decision.

It's the fact you said it's the only reason why it's popular, when it's not. The new Casual mode makes it perfect for newcomers and makes the game accessible to more than the traditional fanbase, which is more relevant to Karspankey's question about it.

At the same time this is one of the fairest Fire Emblem games with a cast with very strong growth rates, the casual setting and another way to prevent enemies from hitting you via supports (heck even being next to another allied unit is 10% chance of taking no damage).

As for the waifu crap. I never bothered marrying anyone nor buying any DLC. I found the self insert protagonist more of a concern really.

Like many Fire Emblem games it can be trivially easy if you pump all your EXP into a few characters who tear the entire battlefield apart but that isn't fun.

As far as Fire Emblem games go I prefer to recommend "Fire Emblem" on the Game Boy Advance as I find it to be a better game. It does not have world map or grinding opportunities but has more interesting plot, maps with varied mission objectives and is a lot cheaper. The drawback is Wii U VC though.

I wouldn't saw Awakening is terrible but it could be so much more.

The fact is that I said stuff about FE: Awakening but that stuff is just my opinion. Nowhere did I state that it was a fact. We're talking about subjective matters so it's illogical of you or anyone else to assume that I regard my opinions as facts. Anyway, we should stop with this semantics talk.
3DS has other SRPGs with no perma death, e.g., Devil Survivor overclocked, yet FE is by far the most recommended. Why is that? I can't think of anything else but the pandering.

I wouldn't say it's that fair since the location of enemy reinforcements can't be predicted and some are even unannounced. The enemy AI also seems to always go after your weakest characters. The sacred Stones, the only other FE I played, was much less frustrating even though it doesn't have a casual option.

It's hard to ignore the pandering since it affected the character designs and even though I didn't buy any of the DLC I'm still bothered by the principle of it. Selling cheat-code DLC is just the worst.

Well, if Karspankey is from PAL-land, he can get The Sacred Stones which has a world map and allows grinding, though I don't remember having to grind on my normal playthrough.

Hey, maybe if Sin & Punishment 2 does well on VC we can get Sin & Punishment 3!

S&P doing well on VC is the reason we got S&P2 and the game bombed. I don't think Nintendo will repeat the same ''mistake''.

My thread about the game:

Credit to Hero of Legend for getting me to pick up this game on Wii U. Here's his original LTTP thread for this game.

This is a basic 2D platformer, of which there are already quite a few available on the 3DS. There's just something special about this one, though. You traverse through bite-size levels and you can stick to walls. Touching black goo immediately kills you. You have infinite levels. I've never played Super Meat Boy but I've heard this described as SMB lite. I'm sure it's not as hard, although 100%ing the game offers plenty of content and increased, significant difficulty. It's definitely significantly more difficult than a Kirby game (I do love Kirby games, though). Anyway, the game is charming in a 2D hand-drawn Kung Fu Panda kind of way. The music is catchy and the artwork is gorgeous.

Pro-tip: collect the carrots for added difficulty (a la star coins in NSMB) but don't buy power-ups, they're like a super guide or White Tanooki-style item.

TL;DR: it's $5 €1.49 / £1.29 / CHF 2.09 and offers tons of fun and content.

I can't vouch for the 3DS version since I haven't played it, but NLife seemed pleased with it:

Kung Fu Rabbit won’t blow you away with new gameplay innovations and cutting edge design, but it is nevertheless a fun game to play. More importantly, it’s well made, sporting finely tuned controls, stylish visuals and a good amount of challenge. It's well suited to the 3DS and while it may lack the high definition offered by its Wii U counterpart, it's not a huge loss as the beauty is really found in its art style. With lots of short stages, it’s a great pick-up-and-play title, making it a positive purchase for 3DS owners who take their system with them on the go.

FE: Awakening is a great game. Opinions eh?

To expand a little on my rather hissy reply:

Ok. So, I'd never played a FE game before and it isn't in a genre that I would usually go for, but I found the game to be very captivating. I think it has the highest 'average play time' stat on my 3DS. I would become engrossed in this game for hours on end. What really makes it for me is the characters and dialog. You really start to care about them, especially knowing that death means the end, literally, of your interaction with that character. Other than that, it isn't too deep in terms of gameplay systems, which I feel is ideal for a handheld strategy game - it was very easy to pick up and play. I'd give it a strong 8/10, possibly a 9, which means it comes highly recommended, even if this genre is not normally your thing.

Yeah, enter me. Haha! daydream originally turned me on to this game back when it was PC only. So I was psyched when I found out it was heading to Wii U last Fall.

I haven't played a ton of it but it's got a really good touchscreen interface and some very clever bonus content. What I've played from the early goings-on in the game was already getting decently complex in terms of puzzles. For $3 it's really a buy no question in my mind. I plan to get back to it but have just gotten sidetracked with other games.

It has puzzles?

Anyway, for Kirby, I will be nabbing the GameBoy ones I am missing. Pinball Land and Block thingy. Also Nightmare in Dreamland.

Hey, I try to tell people that...
But it's easier to fit me into a box of set descriptions and go with that.

So I just don't bother anymore >.>
Something something broccoli; maths, grammar, dead pinnochio something something.

So I have 3D world coming in the post and I'm nearly done with exams; should I be hyped?

For the Fire Emblem Awakening talk - I really loved the game and there were several reasons for it:

- Existence of Casual mode (I honestly didn't end up playing this way, but this would saved me a lot of time on characters getting killed at the very end of a mission)
- Music - The music was pretty awesome in this game
- Story - Yes, I didn't think it was a brilliant story or anything, but there were a couple of chapters in the middle that REALLY surprised me and were really well done.
- Reclassing system - Basically allowed for infinite combinations of characters
- The children system - The "relationships" were honestly more an extra, but pairing up folks appropriately to get children with amazing stats is a fun strategic portion of the game.
