Nintendo Downloads - July 2012

Dix you exit out of any apps you have before closing the 3DS? Nothing can be running while sleep downloading.
EDIT: Read that wrong, sorry. Maybe it has something to do with your internet? :/

I guess not but I have no idea. I just clicked Sleep Mode download and I think it takes you back to the Home screen, then I closed the lid. No idea what other app is open.
Edit: More than likely, my internets shit, but it downloads fine on the other screen.

I just got a 3DS so excuse my ignorance... but sleep mode when downloading something... how does it work?

I keep the DS on and shut the lid after I've pressed Sleep Mode Download. Yet when I keep checking on it in this mode every once in a while, the % didn't move, so I gave up and re downloaded it but kept it on the dropping gems screen.

I honestly feel like I've gone back in time to the PS3 launch in the way this system downloads.

You need to push the power button first, so you get to the screen where you can turn off the system. When you're on that screen, you can close the lid and it'll start downloading.

You need to exit the Eshop and be on the home screen. Then just shut the 3DS and they'll download.

Oh brill, thanks. I wasn't doing that.

Can I queue up downloads?
You can pick as many things as you want when you select the download later option. I downloaded and updated close to 8 things last week.

My 3DS still has the hibernate mode broken, and i've sent my 3DS and it came back the same. The issue is if the console is in hibernation for say 8hours when i go back to it, it wont recover, the screens stay black with the leds flashing, and then i have to keep the power button for some seconds and restart it again....boring, i think i'm going to trade for 3DSxl and get over with it....

So what recommendations do people have for some really good gems to download?

:)

Donkey Kong (GB), Link's Awakening DX (GBC) and Pushmo are the ones I can recommend without any caveats whatsoever.

Other great choices include: Mutant Mudds, Mighty Switch Force, Zen Pinball 3D, VVVVVV.

So after picking up Super Mario Land 2 in the recent EU sale (and making minimal savings by doing so) i've finished it once more, now having played all 3 Mario Land games (Wario being the outlier until I finished it last week) I can conclude that it's my favourite of the three. Of course all of them play quite differently but dammit they all say Mario Land.

It's funny that SML1 gets given praise for its crazy setting and unusualness in the Mario series but land 2 doesn't, it's no slouch in the odd department either, sure it plays things more safer leaning on a more cartoon like style which isn't quite as out there as whatever the hell SML was doing but it's certainly far removed from the SMB stuff. Mario Zone and Macro Zone are still the highlights of this game, it's quite astounding seeing the jump from ML1 to ML2, bringing over SMW alt exits and world map is nice as well.
It's not perfect, Mario's jump has some odd momentum at times, the jump from a short run is criminally poor which can be problematic when making precision jumps (a similar fault in 3D Land now I think about it), the 3DS analogue pad doesn't mesh that well here, a bit slippery and I kept doing mid air spins though that's not too much of an issue.
Wario's Castle is a brutal difficulty spike and suffers from no checkpoints and some hazards are not really visible until you've jumped into them, but anyway I enjoyed my return to this game. Plus the music is awesome.

Now lets get some Wario Land 2 out here, I need to see if my nostalgia holds up.

The castle is hilariously difficult compared to the rest of the game. The bits that always get me are those little moving platforms onto which you're supposed to jump, despite the fact the timing is awkward and they come from under the platform you're standing on. Save states actually came in useful here, which is a ridiculous thing to say about a GB Mario game.

But yeah, Wario 2. I need that.

EU update this week:

3DS VC: Castlevania: The Adventure
eShop: Zombie Slayer Diox, Mutant Mudds Demo
DSiWare: Escape the Virus: Swarm Survival
It would be really nice if they could bring us the Game Boy Colour version of Castlevania the Adventure that the released on the Konami GB Classics line, but I'm not going to hold my breath :(
I would be even better if Konami just released all of those on the service instead of each game individually. I'd easily pay 10 bucks for each one if they did.

Why... why does that music does those weird things to my head.

Woah woah woah. Woah.
What is V^6's caveat, other than you might love it too much?

I'd throw out Megaman GB and Dillon's Rolling Western.
DsiWare-wise, you need to have ArtStyle Boxlife and Picopict.

Oh man, that one jump with the moving platform that only stops below the platform you're standing on, I hate it so, the timing is pretty tricky, the target platform to land on is small, moving and you have to do it pretty quick or else you can't duck below the wall, to top it off all the item boxes lob fire flowers at you, hoping for the bunny ears? nope here's a flower to kill all those enemies that aren't actually in the stage.
I always forget about the save state function.

Depends what kind of weird, but lets cover all the bases with It's oddly hypnotic

Likely the fact that a lot of people already played it long ago on Steam for a much lower price.

That being said, I'd rank it among the top of my 3DSWare list and from the little I played on PC (tried the demo on Steam before I bought the 3DS version) I find it much better suited to the 3DS. The controls feel much better and the 3d effect is pretty cool. Well worth the money.

Even though it's difficult compared to the rest of the game, I never really have much trouble with Wario's Castle. SML2 is probably the one Mario game I'm confident I could beat in one sitting without losing a life.

Ha ha. That's the bit. That one jump is harder than every other entire level or boss in the game. Crazy.

Does anyone know if the DLC for Theathrythm is tied to the cart, or to the system? ie; we have two 3DS systems in the house and I want to know if DLC will be stuck on a single system. I'm betting yes it's system tied, but wanted to make sure. :(

I'm wondering this too, since I'm considering a 3DS XL but will be keeping my current system too. There's no DLC up for NA yet though as far as I can tell, since it just disconnects me if I choose the option in the menu.

Probably the system. I believe the Mario Kart 7 update (which basically acts like DLC) is tied to the system.

I assume it downloads to the SD card so it's system locked.

If only it were tied to my Club Nintendo account, where I have three 3DS systems registered. :(

Even if Nintendo ever updates the 3DS to support accounts, you'll most likely only be able to have one activated 3DS at one time, basically to allow the data transfer to be done asynchronously.

This keeps going unanswered... how is Tumblepop and is it worth a purchase when it comes out?
We used to have an arcade cabinet of this in the apartment.

It's a pretty good Bubble Bobble clone game, if you're into those. I can't speak on the Game Boy conversion, though.

Alright, fine. I'll be the dummy lol

Also, Metroid 2, Mega Man, Bionic Commando, or Gargoyles Quest? I can't decide

I haven't played all of those games but Gargoyles Quest is pretty cool. It's a pretty amusing blend of platformer and RPG.

Can't speak to Mega Man, but all the rest are flawed but worthwhile. If you like Metroid and haven't played it, Metroid 2 is the obvious choice. Gargoyle's Quest is really fun (and even more fun with save states ;). Bionic Commando is the earlier one, not Elite Forces, but it's pretty good. (EDIT: I mean, almost competitive with the NES one. Very solid.)

If anybody missed it and likes incredibly weird platform/shooters, check out Avenging Spirit. It's a pretty broken game, but it's impressive for what it does.

I got Avenging Spirit already, and it's... ok. The concept is really cool but the game just feels unsubstantial. :/

And it seems like I'm gonna bite on Gargoyles Quest. Thanks :)

Gargoyle's Quest is pretty beastly....has a lot of scope and ambition for a GB title I was pretty surprised.

Makes me really wish that Capcom would release Demons Crest on Wii VC though:(

So what recommendations do people have for some really good gems to download?

I'll re-recommend most of the ones already recommended, though I personally found Sakura Samurai dull and do not recommend it.

To add to the list:
Dillon's Rolling Western
Nintendo's "Art Style" games

Oooh I always forget about Gargoyle's Quest. That is a great little game.

Be sure to make extensive use of save states :X

Everything you download from the eShop is tied to the system.

Gargoyle's Quest II AND Demon's Crest!

There's also a couple other NES/SNES Capcom games I'd still like too (Mighty Final Fight, Mega Man 6-7, Mega Man X3).
