Nintendo Downloads - November 2012

I played the demo until the end. What they offered was way too simple for me. The fortress and quest were so easy, and dialogue is so simple it makes me fall asleep. Gameplay I could see some neat uses for it later on, but it didn't really grab me. Finding the Disney characters well really random and almost unrewarding. Visually it was a pretty nice. Not sure if there's enough here to sell me right. Hopefully there's a decent sale in a few months and I might consider it.

The very basic functions/mechanics of the game are pretty damned similar to Castle of Illusion. Both games have:

- Slow walking speed (There's a reason the other Illusion games after Castle increased the walking speed. Hell, World of Illusion went all in and gave him a dash)
- Ridiculously floaty jump
- Aerial bouncing attack
- Projectile attacks (Apples & Marbles in Castle, Paint in Power)

The thing is, Castle of Illusion was able to take the aforementioned things and mold some pretty damn solid level design around it. Power of Illusion throws a bunch of painting gimmicks on top of everything that grinds everything to a halt and constantly breaks up the already plodding pace. And that's not even taking the unskippable cutscenes into consideration.

I'm still willing to give the full game a chance, but the demo definitely left a lot to be desired for me. Like everyone else already said, it's definitely not something I'd drop $40 on.

Yeah, the writing is really flat. Easier to overlook than it'd be in a game with fully animated cutscenes and voice acting, but if even Adventure Time can have actual effort put into its script...

The writing was also my biggest problem, far moreso than the pace of the gameplay. It's not offensively bad, but it's just completely unremarkable. In some ways, that's worse than being "bad"... it's boring.

I liked it. I did feel it was a little slow but it was the beginning of the game so we'll see how it holds up when it comes out. The game seemed to get more enjoyable the more time I progressed through the demo.

I said this in my impressions already, but I really didn't mind the paint/thinner stuff. Yeah it slowed the game down even more, but even in the demo I felt there were a couple instances where it was used in an interesting way. I also think the Sketch system is a very cool mechanic to give the player some freedom and customization.

My main complaint would have to be it was too time-consuming. The paintings really shouldn't be more than tracing a single outline (ever), and the thinner's brush should've been bigger or something. It just takes too long.

This is a game for the kids which I think they will really like. Beautiful graphics and lots of Disney characters to save. But like someone said earlier, saving characters just seemed so random. I thought some clever platforming or puzzle solving would save them. They just show up as you go through a level. Totally disappointed but did enjoy the epic Mickey 2 demo.

I feel like there was almost enough there for me. I can't believe it cut out right before the boss. Like they throw you into the boss fight and then stop it to say the demo is finished...

But anyways, I think there's definitely potential considering the stickers or whatever they were. You only got one and the loadout was customizable so there's a lot of possibilities there. Who knows if it'll play out. Definitely going to wait on impressions

I think a huge problem is that the standards we're holding the game by are also games meant for kids, or at least games we played as a kid. Mario's much faster paced, Mega Man has no dash yet feels pretty fast, and the aforementioned later Illusion games sped things up (though it's been forever since I played any, and I probably didn't even try Castle of Illusions ever). And while I probably can't expect them to skip explaining stuff, I don't see why abilities NEED to be locked. I'd imagine most kids would want to press the buttons and see what happens, the game can point out what those abilities could do as it becomes relevant.

Yeah, it's good to remember the game's meant for kids, but there's limits there and it shouldn't be treated as a blank check excuse for why the game's the way it is. Not even holding the fact it's easy against it, though the fact I had a lot of trouble getting out of that pit in the first stage with a super bounce (was I doing it wrong? I just jumped on an enemy mid-fall) makes it hard to say this is TOO easy.

EDIT: With all that said it was still fun, just not as good as many of us hoped. That's more than enough for something a kid will like and probably look back on fondly, though I doubt they'll much like aspects like starting the game over when they have to sit through a stupidly long intro sequence.

I don't buy into the philosophy that games are allowed to be shitty if they're for kids. A good game doesn't have a maximum age limit. There are tons of games that are kid-friendly while actually being fun to play.

That said, I don't think Power of Illusion is a terrible game, at least from the demo. But that painting stuff really ruins the flow.

True, about kids. This one actually feels a bit like the Hannah Montana game for DS that I played back in the day.

Man, seeing these sprites did call back the Capcom SNES titles. Kinda wish they just had made this a straight platformer. That said, I've a feeling there will be something here worth playing. I'm certainly curious about all the Disney levels.

My preorder stands.

Basically how I felt about it. It seems a decent enough platformer, but constantly stopping gameplay in its tracks to trace the same shapes over and over just completely ruins the flow and made me tired of the game by the time I finished the demo.

I think they could have hit the sweet spot that both kids and adults would like. Differing difficulty levels, not so much hand-holding, etc. But when the game tells you exactly where to draw platforms, erase obstacles, I think there's no chance that this will cater to the older player looking for substantial gameplay. Went from a must-have to a game that I couldn't even finish the demo. And that rarely happens for me.

This is where Sketches come into play, though. Obviously getting through the levels normally will probably be possible without ever using those, but I'm thinking to reach all the secret items and maybe rescue all the characters, some creativity may be required.

Just a guess, but that's the direction I feel the game is headed.

So I could have SWORN that Pokedex3D Pro was going to release for $7.99. I casually log on to the e-shop with full intentions of downloading and then notice it is $14.99. $15 for a pokedex? Fuck that Nintendo.

The Epic Mickey game is pretty good, just not really my kind of platformer. Just too much doing "other stuff" and not so much platforming. Reminds me of Drawn to Life. The sprite artwork in the entire game itself is awesome, but unfortunately, I'm not one to buy a game just based on that. Also, holy moly the opening cutscenes felt like they were going on forever.

What the hell is with the ridiculously slow and static opening to Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion? I wanted to get into the platforming but instead I got this boring ass intro and its not even voiced.

Crashmo/Fallblox coming to EU eShop next week wooo!!

My body is not ready. Time to buy that and Sakura whatever!

Yeah I think that was a bad choice tbh for a demo, it should have just checked you into the action.

I dunno how I feel about the game yet, I'm still going to get it, mainly based on how much I loved Monsters Tale and Henry Hatsworth and I do have faith in these guys. But I agree with alot of what people have said, too many drawing bits slowing the game down and does feel alittle sluggish. Hopefully as the game goes on you unlock stuff like a dash move and so on like in Monsters Tale.

Was actually quite interested to check out the Mickey demo. I'm not much for Disney, but Castle of Illusion was really one of my favorite Genesis games back in the day.
With this effort,I was surprised how good the production quality was, and the level layouts seemed thoughtful as well. But the game is clearly not for me, I miss the straight and subtle action of the old days (simpler mechanics, not an overabundance of options, etc)
But overall things would be forgiven if they didn't include the sketching/painting/thinning mechanics. Game killer, I'm out (yes I played thru the demo), would not play any further if it was free. That stuff is a major drag.

Anyone have a download code for Donkey Kong Original Edition they wouldn't mind parting with? I love classic DK but won't be able to get any of the eligible games in the promo for awhile due to my budget being tight for the Wii U launch. I'd be willing to trade a Super Punch Out code for it or just pay $5

I'm hopelessly addicted to these quizzes in the Pokedex Pro.

Did anyone else indulge? I don't understand why my medals look different...

Edit: Seriously, what da heyl?
It's based on your best time for completing a quiz. The cup is better than the medal and I'm not sure if anything is better than the cup.

DreamRift's previous games have shown promise and always disappointed in execution. This doesn't even feel promising. And they still suck at level design to an almost unbelievable extent.

BTW, got my DK Original Edition code. Love it. It's been so long since I've played the pie factory level that it feels really strange, though. Is the hammer on the upper level even good for anything?

Stuck in the Power of Illusion demo. Can't bounce off this enemy high enough to get over this ledge.

Seven Force is right though, this is definitely more a sequel to Castle of Illusion than any of the other Mickey platformers.

Why doesn't it borrow anything from World of Illusion, the less-slow less-boring sequel?

I caved and got Mario Picross from the CN deal. I thought it would satiate my desire for Picross e but it just made it worse. The little things like line numbers graying out when the line has been 'solved' to the mark empty square button overwriting marked squares to the whole interface being laggy are too annoying.

When do digital releases for retail games usually go online? At midnight or at the usual store update time? (looking to buy Paper Mario, of course)

Yeah, if you played a newer Picross game before you will surely miss all the comfort functions those had. But for me it only took a few puzzles to adjust. Give it another chance, I'm sure you will still be able to enjoy it.

Gonna clear out my stock of Wii Points before I do the transfer to Wii U. I've got 700 points which is a pain in the ass normally but since I'm getting MMX2 I'll have 900 points left over if I add ten dollars to it, so I'm thinking about adding a clasic Neo-Geo fighting game to my collection.

The question I pose to you is which is the best KoF game available?

You can transfer Wii points to Wii U....
That's relieving for him and others, but it's kind of terrifying to us that hoped for exact payments. Best hope I guess is buying through the Wii U eShop then going to Wii mode to download.

400 isn't so bad; add twenty bucks to it and it's three SNES/Genesis games.

Hm, true.

I'll keep this in mind for whenever I feel like downloading some old VC games. I assume Wii Points will just move over to the Wii mode Shop Channel and not the eShop?

Man, if we have to buy separate currencies for the Wii shop and Wii U shop... Eeeuuuuuuurrrrrrgggggghhhhhh

Man, if we have to buy separate currencies for the Wii shop and Wii U shop... Eeeuuuuuuurrrrrrgggggghhhhhh

It's probably going to happen.

The WiiU eShop is going to feel so barren without a WiiWare/VC backlog to look through on a new store. It's just going to be a few retail games and a few downloadables :/

Now why on earth would you say that's probably going to happen?

Since there is a separate Wii Shop Channel on the system, I assume that the points will transfer to there, and that Wii points and eShop currency will be separate due to the fact that they are two different shops and two different currencies.

I'd love to be proven wrong, I'm just assuming the worst.

The Wii Shop Channel lets you use credit cards or eShop cards now, so you don't need to buy Nintendo Points cards, but it'll still use a separate wallet from the Wii U eShop and it still uses Nintendo Points.
