Nope. NOE still don't have a clue what they're doing. A small lining though:
* Every TG16 games runs in 60Hz (plus later releases fixed that Vaseline filter, didn't get applied to earlier releases due to Nintendo's daft patching policy*).
* Every VC arcade game runs at 60Hz. Small selection though (my guess is sold badly, very specific emulators needed so not worth work) and remember Golden Axe has less stages than the Mega Drive version.
* NES, SNES and N64 imports are 60Hz (these cost 100-200 points more). For some strange reason the Mega Drive imports are 50Hz so steer clear of those.

Maybe this'll change for the Wii U. I doubt it though. Thats one thing that frustrates me with Nintendo is even though they're getting more social its still impossible to talk to them and ask them to have someone spend 5 minutes putting an if statement (or even an options screen) in to help people get the most joy and value out of their products (something they pride themselves in).

*-Patch=new game so needs to spend months in the lot check. It also resets sales to zero which is a problem for WiiWare since you're not paid unless you reach a sales figure in 24 months of release.

My monitor only accepts 60Hz. I guess no VC for me :(

You can still enjoy a more limited selection which includes some gems (at least in my opinion) like Mario's Super Picross, Final Fantasy VI and Sin and Punishment.

What about NES games on 3DS, are they 60Hz?
Thats a good point. I've not got a 3DS but I hear they are 60Hz. Wonder what that means for the future (if other VC platforms are ever supported on 3DS).

I don't have an European 3DS, but I'm not even sure the 3DS can output 50Hz, so there's a good chance they are 60Hz.

Wikipedia (I know) says the 3D classics run at full speed, while the vanilla versions run at their original speed.
''The PAL versions of all 3D Classics games on the Nintendo 3DS except Xevious and TwinBee runs much smoother at 60 Hz unlike the Wii's Virtual Console versions which only run at 50 Hz mainly due to the fact the 3DS versions are semi-modified ports of their original NES versions. The ambassador and the full release versions of the NES games, however, retain their original PAL formats.''

Who makes this stupid decisions? There's no reason for PAL territories to get inferior versions in this day and age. Someone should really grill Nintendo on this issue!

Totally destroyed my excitement over MM1, which would have been my first MM game.

I guess at least for PAL versions that have been translated or had some other changes, they can't just upload the US version. That means they'd have to put more work into it by making a PAL version that's 60Hz compatible. Sony doesn't do it any differently and in fact they even screw it up more than Nintendo does.

But how hard is it to make a 50Hz game display at 60Hz? Certainly not that hard if Nintendo went through the trouble to gives us 50HZ versions of the ''import'' Mega Drive titles. Sony also recently modified PS1 imports on PSN to run at 50Hz. Why would anyone ever do that? There must be some idiots somewhere that think anyone actually wants this crappy versions.

All nes 3DS games are 60hz

Are you sure? Did you confirm it with your own eyes? Because I've googled some more and I'v read conflicting reports.

Could be a problem if the game in question was altered to better run at 50Hz (I guess this would be true for most games). I don't know about those Mega Drive games, but Sony didn't "modify" their imports to run at 50Hz, they just stupidly told the console to run a US version at 50Hz, they didn't change anything about the games. What this means is, you get a US version that runs about 17% slower in every aspect including the music. They obviously screwed up, but somehow they have a hard time to admit that and fix it.

Well, wikipedia states that PAL optimized games (Donkey Kong Country...) run at 60Hz when played on Wii's VC. Can't they just make the game run faster while making the sound play at the same speed?

That Wikipedia statement is bullshit.
It's not only about 50Hz/60Hz, they also have to undo any changes they made because of the difference in resolution. That's all stuff you usually can't do within the emulator, so you'd have to work on the game itself. Depending on the circumstances that might not be an easy thing to do.

Picross 2 for 3DS JP VC next week. (Didn't know there was a sequel...) Looks like there's an E.X. Troopers demo out, too. I thought that was for next week, though... (Or was that the PSN demo...?)

I see.
Still, they could at least give us the option to play the NTSC version.

I was in Tokyo for the first time ever last week and I bought a Japanese 3DS mainly so I could play both of the Picross games that I am tired of waiting for the US to get. It was a wise decision.

http://www.capcom-unity.com/brelston/blog/2012/10/17/ghosts-n-goblins-coming-to-3ds-eshop-next-week

Just in time for Halloween, the NES version of Ghosts 'n Goblins arrives on the 3DS eShop to torment poor Arthur all over again. This '80s classic is rated E for 'Mild Fantasy Violence,' though IMO the ESRB should consider adding descriptors for 'Soul Crushing Difficulty' and 'Not Responsible When You Snap the 3DS In Half.'

This is actually the second Capcom game I played, ever (the first being 1942). First saw it in a fine Kentucky lodge arcade, then realized a friend had the same game on NES months later. Designed as a quarter muncher, GnG really tests your skill and demands precise play from beginning to end. However, I always felt the game did so much with so little, creating an oppressive, unwelcome mood that made you feel like the journey was truly impossible. But with enough perseverance (or like $50 in quarters) you could win the day.

So uh, yeah! Step up to the challenge next week, on 10/25!

Wow that's some picross commitment there

Since we are talking about Picross, are all the puzzles in Picross-e solvable without any guessing? I had all the hints and help systems turned off and had to ''guess'' for ~3 puzzles, I think X14 was among them. I checked the columns and rows again and again but couldn't find any clues once I got to a certain point.

Especially when you can get more than half of it by simply by a 5 dollar used copy of Picross DS and simply download all the free DLC.

Man, you need to tell me where you find Picross DS for 5 bucks. I lost my copy years ago and have wanted to get a replacement, but everywhere I go it's either unavailable or like $30+ used.

Yeah, seriously, people on GAF live in a dream world where Picross DS is $5 and rain is made of chocolate and there's no war.

you can get it really cheap in the UK, i bought it last year from CEX secondhand for £3 which is roughly $5

Problem is NOE messed up on the DLC for the European version. They put up about 2 packs and then...nothing*. I personally own a Japanese version of Picross DS but couldn't figure out the DLC menus let alone manage what I've played/not played. Plus lacking a wireless connection (I can access one but its not compatabile with the stone-age wireless the DS needs).

*-Apparently day 1 everything was there but at 1x1 dummy puzzles.

Makes me wonder if thats why we got Mario's Super Picross on the VC (its an import so 60Hz).

Goddammit, if i'd known Picross was so easy to find for cheap in the States, I'd have bought a copy when I was there last month.
