Nintendo Downloads - October 2014

I'm thinking about getting a Wii U, and I already have a Wii with about 20 or so VC titles on it (NES, SNES, N64, that kinda thing).

If I transferred over the games to the Wii U, would they then be 'linked' to the console? I mean, in the sense that they are currently 'linked' to my Wii (with the lack of an account system). I can delete and redownload the games as long as it's on that specific console.

In essence, would you have the ability to redownload the titles on the Wii U console at no charge, once they've been transferred? Do they somehow become 'linked' to your NNID? Also, can you buy and download Wii VC titles on the Wii U?

They don't become linked to your NNID since the wii on the U is walled off so to say. Once you have transferred license to the U you can download everything you have on the Wii to the U. You can also buy stuff on the Wii Shop. Wii mode on the U is in effect just a Wii. You can even soft of the Wii mode like a normal Wii.

Hope that clears it up.

As for this weeks update, holy moly! I want Paper Monsters, Ballpoint, Castlevania, and the sales! I could get Steamworld, Squids, Reboot and Tnt Racers because the sales make them all a lot more palatable for what try are. There goes the budget. I already have too much on the U as it is, over 50 pieces of software, but whatever these are decent deals and are worth playing.

It seems you're somehow not aware of the VC upgrade program. After doing the Wii -> Wii U system transfer, EVERYTHING from your Wii is on your Wii U in Wii Mode. The Wii Shop licenses have been transferred and the Wii Shop in Wii Mode on your Wii U now acts as the one you bought them in on your original Wii. You can play, redownload and do whatever you want with all your Wii Shop purchases on Wii U in Wii Mode. Then there is the option to UPGRADE those Wii VC titles to native Wii U VC titles - given that the game in question has been released for Wii U VC already. Uprade fees for NES games is $/€1 and $/€1.49 for SNES games.

Which of the non-SOTN castlevanias are in Metroidvania style? I tried Castlevania Chronicles to see if I might like Circle of the Moon and...naw still can't enjoy this stuff. Think I'll avoid all non-metroidvania games, and I didn't enjoy Harmony of Despair at all. Surely SOTN isn't the ONLY one I'll like...right?

I believe all three GBA games adhere to the Metroidvania style but someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that.

Thanks for the responses, to both of you. "Licences" was the word I was trying to think of to explain my concern, I just couldn't remember it. So they get transferred, that's cool.

The upgrade thing is also awesome, I'd certainly do that for the ones that are available (though, I take it the N64 games aren't (yet) and, it seems, the Square SNES RPGs). Is the price a limited-time thing?

Also, for Wii VC games, could I still use my Wii Classic Controller Pro? I'd obviously have to connect it to a Wii-remote.

All the GBA/DS games are metroidvanias, and all but the first one (Circle of the Moon) were directed by Koji Igarashi, the SOTN guy.

Castlevania Chronicles is an enhanced port of a Sharp X68000 game from 1994 and is definitely in the traditional CV mold, so I wouldn't really use it as a point of reference for the metroidvania stuff.

EDIT: if you only get one GBA game, make it Aria of Sorrow.

Does this also apply to a modded Wii?

I avoided transferring my Wii saves and VC games over because I don't want the mod to affect the Wii U side.

Really? That's great news. I take it that I could use it in lieu of the Wii U Pro Controller, is that right? Is there a list of compatible games available?

Edit: Nevermind, I see it's here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_that_use_the_Classic_Controller#Wii_U

It's not that you can, it's that you HAVE TO! Wii Mode turns your Wii U into a Wii. Wii Mode thus cannot recognize ANY Wii U accessories, features and whatnot. You have to use the originally compatible Wii controllers to control all the games. Wii Classic Controllers, Wii Remotes, the whole shabang. No GamePad or Wii U Pro Controller magic.

The one thing it does do is give you the option to mirror video output to the GamePad so you can technically play any and all Wii software in Wii Mode on the GamePad screen (there's a sensor bar built into the GamePad above the screen) but you still have to use the original Wii controllers as Wii Mode doesn't recognize the GamePad as a controller due to different wireless protocols or stuff like that.

It only transfers over stuff it recognizes. Homebrew is obviously not included and will remain as on the source Wii as is.

Very nice. I love Kirby's Adventure, so this will be added to my VC collection.
Some things people don't like about Nightmare in Dream Land are:
-Background graphics
-You actually see less of the playing area on the GBA screen than you did the NES version.

But NES adventure has the horrendous slowdowns plus is 50Hz shit in Europe (3D Classics doesn't to both) and the bonus
Meta Knight
mode in Nightmare in Dream Land is good.

Just to confirm here for people not following the DKC thread...

Despite having translations back in the olden days, the DKC that has gone up on the EU eShop is the US 60Hz version. Hooray!
Good news.

Has anybody bought Squids Odyssey in EU yet? Is the cross-buy promo still in effect during the sale? (buy on 3DS -> get Wii U ver. for free)

Yes, Gargoyle's Quest 2 AND Demon's Crest on the same day! Feels like it's been so long since the original Gargoyle's Quest was added to the 3DS VC.

Demon's Crest is a sequel to Gargoyle's Quest II, I guess? Does Crest gave the complicated wall-scaling? Which is better if I had to get just one?

Nintendo stopped posting the weekly release and discounts update in the news section of the European 3DS and Wii U eShops. Am I the only one bothered by this?

What I wanna know is if they changed anything in DKC2 & 3 since I recall there was some Killer Instinct references in there. I'm guessing since Microsoft owns the rights to it now, Nintendo probably had to remove/replace them in order to put them back up.

DKC was Europe only ????!

Fuuuuuuuuck. Nooooooo.

Nintendo owns the game code as it is.

Microsoft owned Rare when they released DKC on GBA and VC the first time.

Definitely upgrading DKC to the gamepad version

Great week!

I'll be picking up all the Lolo games. Hope 2 & 3 aren't too far off.

Top priority right now, though, is a CV announcement for Europe.

Gargoyle's Quest II and Demon's Crest on Oct. 30th!!!! Yaaaaaaay!

Looks like Aria of Sorrow's Oct. 16th date in last week's PR was a typo. Booooooo!

Is Nightmare in Dream Land a good game? Never played it.
Nightmare in Dreamland is the GBA remake of Adventure. Personally my favorite game in the series.

Wasn't there a lot of palaver in the other thread about this being the 50Hz/60Hz/PAL/NTSC version? Sounds like it was all for nothing.

Getting Ballpoint Universe: Infinite, Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut, Paper Monsters Recut, Ping 1.5+ and Pyramids 2 at very least.

I so would've taken Nightmare in Dreamland over Amazing Mirror from the Ambassador Program.

Though I remember being disappointed in the fact that after unlocking the ability to (spoilers, I guess??)
play as Meta Knight, your reward for beating the game as him was
nothing at all, especially since you couldn't save & pick up where you left off.

I tried Lone Survivor on PC and it didn't take long for me to realize it's not my thing. Seemed like a good game though.

PING 1.5+ Giveaway!

I hate that we can only buy 1st party stuff digitally on the Nintendo website. I would have bought everything at lunch, and sent it to my WiiU to download so they'd be ready when I get home.

Maybe if they could just update the eshop to have a cart on the system it would help immensely. Buying shit one thing at a time is ridiculous.

I remember Dan Adleman saying that Nintendo did some research that showed releasing one game at a time on the digital platforms lead to more sales of this games. I call bullshit because it is so damned tedious to buy more than one thing from any of their shops. It's like no one at Nintendo has heard of a shopping cart.

Actually, think he meant only releasing few games at a time, not talking about buying individually without shopping cart.

Oh neat, I didn't realize that they fixed not being able to exit the 3DS Eshop until everything loads issue. Now I can exit the Eshop without having to wait around like a sap. It's a small thing but I am already noticing the difference.

I suspect they have data on the VC front that supports this, it would explain the one, two, or three game a week approach they have when they have other content releasing on the eShop.

Rather irritating since I'm finding booting into Wii mode untenable*

Plus I'm going to abuse the heck out of save states for Star Tropics.
