it seems that MS is very serious and is ready a big day tomorrow
so I want to post now, before the storm of X360 conference :D

I remember when pics first leaked of Castlevania DS, and some people were like "LOOKZ JUST LIKE GBA CASTLEVANIA WTF."

I wanted to kill those people. I think I did, too. It might explain that smell from my basement...

Did you read the Nintendo Q&A section? It seems like New Super Mario Bros may be coming out in September on Mario's birthday :) They should have more info next month.

Viewtiful Joe Battle Carnival being 4-player suddenly makes it a lot more interesting, and it looks really nice in those shots.

Also means I'll be getting it on GC now, not PSP. Ah well, the wait for another PSP game goes on!

I can't say that I think it looks much better than the GBA ones tho... you think it does?

I thought CotM was pretty fun, but I'm really confused why so many people have such a hard one for this game. is there any reason beyond it just being the next Metroidvania? Like some detail or point about the game that makes it more interesting than a straight GBA sequel of Aria of Sorrow would have been?

I'm genuinely curious.

Yes, I think it looks significantly better than the GBA ones. I don't know how you couldn't agree, the leap in detail is pretty large. At the very least matching PSX Symphony of the Night in places. The only downside is the shitty anime portraits. But that's just bad character art, not bad sprite work or backgrounds. By no means is this GBA quality or close to it.

Well, I genuinely loved Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow. I also think Symphony of the Night is one of the greatest games ever made. In that same hand, then, I see an extremely high amount of promise in this title. It is "metroidvania", and Metroidvania is fuck awesome and always has been. And people who played it have said it's awesome! So that's enough for my uber anticipation.

Okay, that's all I was wondering. Didn't know Metroidvania was so popular.

I think it's a bit addicting myself--being able to level up your little badass dracula hunter and whatnot. But what bugged the hell out of me was the ease with which you could overlevel (even accidentally if you got inordinately lost or kept missing a jump that sent you four floors down) and then stay overleveled for the rest of the game and breeze through it. Doesn't that mean that the formula is fundamentally a bit broken... are they doing anything to fix it in this one as far as you know?

It's popular with the hardcores, less popular with everyone else I'd imagine . Although the Castlevania GBA games sold reasonably well, I think.

I don't know, I wouldn't call it "fundamentally a bit broken" though. As with almost anything where you level up, there will be plenty of opportunities to overlevel. That's part of the freedom of these types of games. I don't think you have to stop to fight everything even if you're lost. I know when I'm at a part of the game where I've been to tons of times, I just skip the fuck over half the shit. I suppose if you were worried about leveling up too much you could do the same.

But if you're specifically asking whether they made it more difficult to overlevel in Castlevania DS, I do not know. I don't think so, but I can't be sure.

My problem is that my instincts always tell me to kill everything to ensure I'll never die.

But then after the fact I get the nasty taste in my mouth that I was not challenged enough.

Holy crap, please be true. To be honest I didn't think we'd see a release this year, let alone as early as Spetember. Fingers crossed.

They could just do away with the levelling concept entirely, but then people would complain

The GBA Castlevanias are games I 'learned' to enjoy. When I bought CotM I tried it for 30 minutes and thought it was crap and never looked at any CV anymore (btw the same goes for Metroid Prime). But then I read all of the appreciation on GAF so I gave CV (and MP) another try and suddenly both games made it to my top 5 franchises :)
