Nintendo DS' amazing first year

So here we are coming up on the first anniversary of the Nintendo DS. I will be the first to admit that while launch had some nice games in it (Mario 64 and Feel the Magic XY/XX) it was pretty slim for the most part. To be completely honest with you, I felt about as annoyed with the DS as I currently do the PSP. Spending a lot of money for two games and both of them going down pretty fast.

So where are we at a year later?

By the end of 2004 we had Asphalt: Urban GT, Feel the Magic, Mario 64, Madden 2005, Mr. Driller, Ping Pals, Ridge Racer DS, Spider-Man 2, Sprung, The Urbz, and Tiger Woods. Not a whole ton of great games, and quite a few that had most of us wondering "huh?".

In February the DS got its first notable non-launch title in WarioWare Touched!. Again a decent game in its own right, but hardly a system seller or killer app.

March followed up with the first game beyond Feel the Magic, showing what can be done with the system: Yoshi Touch n Go. Of course to call it a game might have been pushing it. extremely polished tch demo might be more apt. Also March started showing how GBA publishers started to embrace the DS as well with games like Retro Atari and Robots, both being notable for aspiring to be nothing more than GBA software on the DS. We also saw the release of the much maligned Rayman DS.

April and May were fairly quiet not seeing much activity on any front (NFSU2, Pac-Pix, Puyo Pop, Poker, Polarium, etc).

June was finally the first real month since November where there was a reason to get excited about the DS. Some of those reasons were genuinely exciting (Kirby: Canvas Curse, Meteos), others turned out to be busts (Bomberman DS, GoldenEye, Splinter Cell). Nevertheless, it is hard to argue with the software assault the DS experienced in June.

July was quiet with just one new release, Nanostray.

Then came August. August was important for a few reasons. First, because it introduced us to more GBA-style licensed games, the bread and butter of the GBA. Games like Space Invaders, Yu-Gi-Oh, and another version of Madden. Next, because it introduced yet another third party title working to take advantage of the DS' unique features (Pac n Roll). Of course on top of that you have the ever solid release of Advance Wars: Dual Strike.. But when it comes down to it, August was most significant for providing the catalyst that would change the the DS' fortunes in all territories: Nintendogs. 'Who let the dogs out' indeed.

September was significant if for no other reason than it was the first time in the system's history where it had two months in a row of strong software releases. The notable (Ultimate Spider-Man, Lost in Blue) and the not so much (Trace Memory and Lunar: The Broken Game).

The streak of games followed the system into October with no slowing down in sight. Traditional highlights like Castlevania and Metroid Pinball accompanied new style games like Phoneix Wright and Trauma Center. It even got a handful of EA and GBA-style games to boot.

Now in October things have really icked into high gear. Viewtiful Joe, one of the best Sonic 2D games ever released, and of course the release of Nintendo's online service paired with the greatest Mario Kart ever and a real 3D Tony Hawk with full online modes.

0 to online in 12 months with at least a dozen or so Tier 1 games. It has successfully (so far) defended its lead against Sony's very impressive entry into the market, and still has some of its most highly anticipated and fan favorite games ahead of it in the next couple of months. I think it is quite safe to say that the first year has been kind to the DS, even if most of that kindness happened in the last half of it.

And what a better way to celebrate it's year anniversary next monday than to hop online and kick up some dirt in a 4-player Mario Kart match. Happy First Birthday DS, and here's to many more to come.

Yeah, I was one of those people who went store to store on the system's launch eagerly trying to find one. I ended up picking one for me and my brother. Unfortunately, the honeymoon was really short as I found myself playing the "bomb game" minigame in Mario64 more than anything. I ended up letting my cousin borrow it a few weeks later and didn't look back until last August when I picked up Advance Wars DS.

Since then, I've found myself more excited about the current games, the upcoming games, and gaming in general than I have been in a long time. It's sort of cut into my productivity at work/school a bit, but it feels great to have fun with my old favorite past-time again. :)

To think that New Mario Bros., Mario & Luigi2, FFIII, and Animal Crossing are still to come makes me very excited. If it weren't for DQVIII, I wouldn't even care about the home consoles this holiday season.

I play my DS way more than my home consoles these days. With Mario Kart, Tony Hawk and Animal Crossing all coming out in this short time period, I don't think I'll be turning on the TV much. It's been a good first year, even if it did start off slow.

Launch was fucking atrocious, only Mario 64 didn't outright punch me in the balls with suck. And even that was pretty lame.

DS owns now. Advance Wars DS, Meteos, Castlevania, Kirby, Mario Kart and now Sonic Rush justify purchase x3.

I now respect the DS more than I do the GBA.

I was saddened to see the GBA get replaced(let's face it - it has), but the DS has more than filled the 2D void left in the GBA's absence.

Castlevania and Sonic Rush feature awesome features the GBA could only dream about.

Keep it alive, Nintendo, don't jump the ship too soon this time!

OT: How come I don't see the avatars of a lot of you guys anymore but rather a link to the profile in it's place?

This is so damn true. My experience with the DS exactly.

This year has been AMAZING.

You guys forget two of the best DS games so far:

Daigassou Band Brothers
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan

I like Mario Kart DS, its free online wifi capability and emblem making ability and all but as far as pure gameplay goes, I love the above two rhythm games more than any other in the library.

I <3 my DS.

I find Yoshi Touch & Go to be pretty underrated. It's one of my favorite DS games and a pleasant surprise. Meteos and Kirby were overrated, though I appreciate Sakurai's attempts to SSBMise puzzlers (talkin' 'bout the unlockables here).

Castlevania was awesome (and my first handheld CV!), Advance Wars was awesome (my first AW!), MK is fine, but I need someone, SOMEONE to play against. I have a Mac OSX.2.8, and the only Airport Express I can find is for OSX.3.

Phoenix Wright was fun, though a little too long. Lost in Blue was fine, minus its shitty puzzle that takes up about 1/6 of the game. Trauma Center was good until it gets too difficult for any normal human to beat. I think these're all good rentals. Too bad no one rents 'em out here.

But all-in-all, not bad for a system I paid $30 for last year. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth.

DS sure did clean up this year. I would've been the last to think it would do so well. Going into 2005, I assumed I would've been buying way more PSP games than DS games and it's turned out the exact opposite.

Let's see how well it keeps the momentum up going through year two.

The DS line-up is fucking great now. I picked up MK yesterday and am loving it (despite my router being a cunt), and today I stopped back in to buy THAS, and it's pretty sweet so far. I was really pissed that I couldn't get VJ, Sonic, or Castlevania (which I've been planning to get for the longest time). It's pretty rare nowadays that I'm pissed at a lack of games.

wuv u DS

Touch & Go is underrated. I found it to be quite fun. Same goes for Polarium.

I am enjoying my DS immensly as of late. I don't need to draw off into a list but lots of great games already released and several more in the near future.

Mario Kart and Ouendan are now tied for the best game on the system.

I dunno I think the first year was pretty atrocious o.o'

Launch was a complete bust and so were the following 8 months. It took until August for a killer ap for me to come out (AW: DS) and even so I still haven't picked it up cause of the ripoff $35 price! For every game that came out that I cared about there was a horrifyingly bad piece of news to go with it.

Kirby / No 56k love.
AW: DS / Non-games doing well.
Phoenix Wright / Nintendo raised the price of handheld games not Sony or 3rd parties.
VJ: DT / Still not $99.
Sonic Rush / US Pink sucks PLUS you have to buy it at the scam price of $150 with the non-game.

Bleh!!

But with all that said it is almost time for me ta pick one up. Got 4 games now and 2 or 3 coming for Christmas soooo the holdout can't go on forever. But at least I'll have a nice amount of games ta play unlike the suckers who bought at launch! :lol

I wouldn't call the DS' first YEAR "amazing." The last several months have certainly been quite good for the system, but most of its first year has been a software drought, which is typical of all new system launches.

I sold off my DS last december (and imported a PSP) after its incredibly disappointing launch. Once I finished Sawaru Made In Wario, I didn't see any point in keeping the system.

Knew I'd get one back for Castlevania, but later on I got pretty hyped up for Jump Super Stars and Ouendan, too. Both of those games were big let downs for me; Ouendan was promptly sold off, although I did keep JSS. JSS is okay for what it is; I'm just not too big on the game play. I really need to spend more time with it and at least get all the characters unlocked, but I don't think I'm going to play it very much if at all after the new Dragonball Z DS game comes out in a few weeks.

Looking forward to Sonic Rush (next week) and Mario Kart (doesn't come out here until 12/8 ;_;), both of which seem to be quite overhyped here, but as long as Sonic is better than the GBA games, I'll be happy, and I hope Mario Kart is as good as the SNES and GBA versions. I hated Double Dash.

Decent launch. Expected post-launch drought.

FANTASTIC final few months (to the first year) with a crazy bright future ahead.

Christ, europe has been paying up to 50€ for GBA games during it's first year. Man up already.

The launch and most of the year were pretty bad, but that should've been clear to anyone following the DS, so whatever. I bought the system solely because it could play gba games backlit. Between Advance Wars, Castlevania, and Mario Kart though, the DS is above and beyond my system of the year.

AS: DS IS a GBA game (c'mon, you know it is.) and should be $30 just as its first two games were. The adult in me says I can afford to pay $35 but the kid in me says I gotta be a cheapskate! :D

There are good games for it! I just bought Phoenix Write based on the word of mouth for it. It's awesome, much better than I was expecting. Castlevania is what made me buy the system though, and it was worth every penny

Does it matter? Game number fi-iiiiiiiiiiiiiive .... ;)

And I'm pretty sure someone would wanna buy that nongame off of you on ebay. Xmas + doggies = profit. But regardless ...

Buy a DS. ;)

The launch was just... meh. The following months made me glad I didn't get it at launch and a very happy PSP owner.

I recently got one with Nintendogs but that game is trash but my 5yo sister likes it so its OK. Im planning to get Phoenix Wright and Animal Crossing pretty soon and Im very interested in Trauma Center. I couldn't crae less about about MK and I dunno why people act like its the first online game ever, maybe because its the first online Nintendo game.

Im heavily anticipating FF3 and the next Zelda, they should great titles.

In conclusion, I wouldn't say DS had an amazing year ,in fact, I wouldn't say it had an amazing half a year, I would say a great quarter and I believe the best its yet to come.

1.) #5? Not for $35 of my own buckos. Besides one of my Christmas games is already in the house so it'd be more like #6 atm.
2.) I don't do ebay. Seems complicated ta get into.
3.) Not yet! Still waiting on (hopefully) good Black Friday deals to come in!

Yeah and I believe the bottom/backside is also black. blech~

Yeah, I just imported a white DS, and got Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright, and, of course, Mario Kart.

I'm still planning on getting Kirby, Castlevania, and Meteos.

Anything you guys think I'm missing?

Sonic Rush and Feel The Magic which is pretty cheap by now.

Ouendan, of course. Still the best reason to own a DS.
