Nintendo DS Conference

Nintendo's online strategy is basically unchanged from their GameCube one, except this time, they are taking a lead in setting it up with the proper games, software and infrastructure. It's possible some 3rd party games may simply lease Nintendo's services. Actually, it might be a good carrot to get developers to include free on-line features of some kind.

This also opens the door for a pay per play Square Enix MMORPG for the DS. S-E accountants must be real happy right now.

Ok... pray tell, WHY would it be bad to turn zee computer on once a day, as opposed to letting it churn through extra electricity and all that day in and day out? I've never seen any study to suggest that turning a computer off caused any significant decrease in life expectancy. I'd almost hazard to guess that leaving it on would be worse in the long run, although it seems like it's fairly safe either way.

Ah, sorry you were talking about adding wireless to an existing router...
yeah you need a wireless bridge.

With that in mind, I wonder if Square Enix will now bring FFXI to Revolution. They've already got Crystal Chronicles in the works, and I'm sure the no-fee Wifi Connection was the main factor in keeping SE from making an announcement. The 360 version sure as hell isn't going to do much in Japan.

There is one key difference: the method of going online is built into every console.

At the beginning of the Gamecube's release, Nintendo said they wouldn't pack-in a modem, and it wasn't there at launch, but they'd release one as soon as games needed it. Well, PSO needed it. Guess what? Not good enough to warrant Nintendo's effort, apparently. PSO sat for months longer than it had to, in a pretty much finished state, because Nintendo refused to go into full production on the modems.

With this, it's like the Xbox; there's no aftermarket peripheral required to splinter the market. Even better, no cords needed, even. The dongle's just for non-WiFi areas that still have access to the internet. It's not required at all to play online as long as you have a general WiFi signal.

I have a weird thought, though, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do this, there might not even be the means available to. But say you have the Wireless adaptor plugged into the Xbox 360. (Not the DS dongle, the adaptor that lets the 360 connect to a wireless network.) If Microsoft really wanted to be nasty, could they adjust the console so that it could listen for DS WiFi in the area, and disrupt that signal, or send back faulty data? I don't think the game industry's gotten to _that_ level of sabotage, but you've got to wonder if they'd ever try to pull the "accidental side-effect" line. Similarly, if a PSP firmware update just "happened" to gain a new flaw that made it not only refuse to work with plugging into the Xbox 360 like it currently can, but actually had damaging side effects (maybe not permanent, but maybe the console would crash, or savegames lost, or something)... Nah, I seriously doubt they'd go that far. Still, though, with all of the most recent consoles throwing WiFi signals into the air, you have to wonder if "accidental" side effects might start showing up.
 
how will nintendo make money from wifi?

or isn't this their intention, is it a market trend that now has to be considered, so is nintendo essentially counting online profit from within an online game sale?

does anyone know a rough cost of the infrastructure nintendo has built for wifi? is something like this expensive?
 
what an amazing amount of staggering news all at once from nintendo. great stuff. glad to see rumour dongle is real, since I don't have a wireless router.

Also, I wonder what speeds will be necessary. DS isn't that graphic heavy or anything... think if worst came to worst I could get away with 56k?

I could always just buy a dongle and use it on public computers.

I was more wondering about the range of the DS. Pretty decent space between my neighbor and I. They have 0 security.

Good point about WoW. We'll see though. I know that GBA emulators couldn't do online well because of the fast speeds of GBA to GBA transfer. At least last time I checked anyway.

It does'nt really matter the Range of the DS Wifi as long as their Wifi Reaches over to you :D

Okay, I'm a little confused... The wireless dongle thingy, where in the DS does that plug in? Or does it plug into your computer? I'm just trying to figure out how it would work with these "hot-spots" the Wi-Fi Connection is supposedly going to utilize.

No, the Wi-Fi dongle is ONLY for using your own existing internet connection to play DS games online.

Hotspots are places where other people/companies are offering an internet connection for you to use.

a hotspot is anywhere within range of a wireless router. the dongle plugs into the usb port of your computer, it turns your computer and the area around it into a "hotspot" a hotspot is just jargon for the range of a wireless router/nolongerrumourdongle.

The "Wi-Fi Box" doesn't go into a phone socket. The wireless router (Wi-Fi Box) would connect to a cable or DSL modem.

Here's hoping that the dongle works with my university's network signal...or, if not, the lounge downstairs will work out in terms of wireless.

Mario Basketball looks quite cool...and with online could be teh awesome. I also am interested to see how Starfi/Wario platformers come out in the end...Tingle getting his own game is all fine and good, but I have to wonder how it would work, really. It seems odd, but might be a neat use of the TS.
 
All of this and Nintendo still haven't shown off Zelda, Pokemon or Metroid Dread! This system is insane.

It seems inevitable that a DK based game must be on its way too at some point. Wait...good lord...*wonders if Rare's DS development might be a new DKC*
 
Nintendo have really really upped their game in the face of the PSP. The games lineup for DS is nothing short of insane. Today has been a huge day for DS / GBA news and as someone mentioned, we've yet to see anything on the new Pokemon / Zelda titles. I've never seen a lineup as strong as the DS in Japan. It's going to be unstoppable this Christmas. That said, Nintendo of Europe (and US to a degree) deserve to get their heads panned in - the lineup here was utterly woeful until a few days ago (when the admittedly fantastic AW:DS and Castlevania came out).

Based on Rare porting over DKC 1-3 on GBA I wouldn't be suprised if they are working on a Donkey Kong 64 DS port over a new game.
 
So, wait... do we need this Buffolo AOSS or whatever on our wireless routers to get online with our DSes? I have a wireless router already and I really don't want to have to spend anything extra just to get my DS on the net.
 
Wow, what happened here? I come back to an overload of DS games and find "Taisen Puzzle Puppyinu Better One" in the pile. This better be from the konami taisen puzzle series.

Will this be the first Nintendo console since the SNES where I can't actually get every game I find interesting? Seems so.

A black one would suffice for me. But yeah, the DS is itching for a redesign. I just don't think it's too comfortable to hold. I can play for about 25-30 minutes though without bitching, so it's all good.
