Nintendo DS Conference

Not to put a dampener on things, but I do wonder if Nintendo will be able keep up with this kind of support when the Revolution arrives. Hope so.

Those graphics look great. Mario Kart DS looks as if it's got a texture filter going on.

So your name is displayed above other racers huh? I guess that's a good idea what with being able to pick the same characters. Is that other Mario in a different cart though?

Yeah...art has shown each character to have a normal kart and a special one. Luigi has a cart shaped like a vacuum cleaner, Mario has that little speedster seen on the cover art.

Any word on how you communicate with other players over the internet with Mario Kart DS? I know Animal Crossing has a chat keyboard, but what about Mario Kart? I want to be able to at least chat with people in a certain room before and after the race or something.

If Nintendo wants to allow chatting between MK players, they'll just put a modified version of Pictochat in, I'm sure...

What is that game with Tingle? I don't have jp support at work and the picture just says "tinkul," which is pretty obvious.

Overhead view Tenchu?

Are Square-Enix making the Mario basketball game?!?!?!? That would show how good their relationship now is. If you don't understand me, check the copyrights...

I thought voice wasn't going to be supported? I'd be ok with no voice actually, not sure it's needed for a handheld. wonder what the drop ratio of players will be like in mario kart. being that it's online, probably horrible....

Wow! All this information is unexpected.

Nintendo knows how to make a killing on the handheld.

Now i'm really interested in getting a DS :)

Not even Drinky can complain about this gaming lineup.

(Continues plotting for his eventual deathrace against Drinky.)

do people like this as a gaming lineup, or just as a bunch of names that will eventually crop up on a sales chart? cos the only newly announced ds game i care about is the next castlevania, and somehow i don't think gaf excitement over the new brain training has anything to do with its value as a game.

No, we are just acting ^_^

I think it's a bit of both. Don't forget that hardcore Nintendroids are also very easily excited. But this is a quality lineup, both for GBA and DS.

some of the ds exuberance around here does seem a little feigned! i mean, this time last year you wouldn't be tripping over each other to buy the game about the anime lawyer who points at people...

haven't you seen the pics or read all the announcements? because imo the ds lineup that's been revealed today is nothing short of stunning!

so many updates to games people will love playing! wifi plan revealed to be excellent - easy, safe, free. and so many amazing new announcements!

i think ds owners should feel very happy today :)

i think, more or les, it has to do with the fact that the ds platform will be thriving as a viable portable console with quality software that may rival the snes era for years to come. If the DS takes off every else like it has in Japan, developers (western, or those who have ignored it thus far w/ quality releases) can no longer avoid it. They'll have to support it. So, I think that leaves many portable fans, not just Ninty fans, overly excited about the DS's future. And it looks really good right now, I must say. According to many in the beginning of the year, it was D.O.A when the PSP hit.

to answer your question.

more sales = more support
more support = more sales

There is a reason why PS2 is so popular.

Did you miss the announcement of a Tales game, a new Pheonix Wright, Wario, Mario Basketball Online, Starfi, Magical Vacation, and more I'm sure?

and some of us are indeed looking forward to the new braintraining. The first one was great, I've logged well over a month of training already. Play-Asia is shipping me the kids version as we speak, and I'll pick up this sequal at launch. Hopefully the West gets this soon so some of you can try it out.

Also planning to play around with the english training game if impressions are possitive.

I think what really has people excited here is with a lineup like that, anyone can find something they want to play. Nintendo hasn't seen support for any of their platforms this robust in like 15 years

Ok So here is another dumb wi-fi connection question. My house has a wireless router already, all my PC's are setup using this wireless router. Can I just open my DS, turn on Mario Kart and conect to their wi-fi service? Or do I need to buy that USB key and plug that into my PC?

Any info would be great.

any word on a new model DS with the new "bright" backlit screens? should i wait to buy a DS, or does the DS screen compare well to the new SP2 screen?

Nintendo have really really upped their game in the face of the PSP. The games lineup for DS is nothing short of insane. Today has been a huge day for DS / GBA news and as someone mentioned, we've yet to see anything on the new Pokemon / Zelda titles. I've never seen a lineup as strong as the DS in Japan. It's going to be unstoppable this Christmas. That said, Nintendo of Europe (and US to a degree) deserve to get their heads panned in - the lineup here was utterly woeful until a few days ago (when the admittedly fantastic AW:DS and Castlevania came out).[/QUOT

They're promising to support NEC routers right off the bat, but haven't spoken on other routers. By all accounts I'd say you can, but there might be a bit more involved. The dongle would be a much simpler solution.

So the purpose of the dongle, is basically you plug it into your PC, and then the DS connects to that and gets you online as opposed to trying to setup the DS to go directly through your router?

EDIT: What is Animal Forest? I saw it on the first page of this thread.... Is that just a new name fro Animal Crossing?

Well, that's where subjectivity comes in. Plenty of people loved Brain Training... some of them even post here.

Besides, a new Wario paltformer annoument beats out another recycled Metroidvania announcement. Easy. :)
