Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Definitely the most surprising thing to me was how ineffective Nintendo was at explaining Nintendoland to everyone.
If that is supposed to be the Wii Sports style title that is easy to get into then they certainly didn't make it seem successful.
I'm sure it will be a good game but it is definitely worrying that they couldn't get the concept across to the audience considering how long they had to prepare.

It is on the launch title list as a separate game--it's not a pack-in.

The only reason I can see much of anyone buying this is because it comes with the console. I know kids might like that, but they'll have stuff like NSMB.

Just...ugh. Why would they devote so much time to this?!

Yes.
It was from that image. I know its zoomed in onto the Pikmins.

But even in the other screens, the textures arent really... crisp.

Weird, I can't see that anywhere in that image, are you sure the cut out part wasn't blown up during the upload process?

As far as crispness goes, some of them look pretty nice:

I like the "We've got so many amazing games to show you for WiiU. I don't know how we'll fit it in the hour", remark at the start of the show.

From 2010

Iwata went on to speak hypothetically about theme parks, saying, that simply building a theme park with Nintendo characters in it would be copying all current theme parks. For Nintendo, the important thing is to do something differently and unique, and that is one of the strengths the company has with the the development of its games.

So if Nintendo make a theme park, it would have to be different from other theme parks that are presently operated. Nintendo would need to hit upon something original. According to Iwata, "I won't say that it will never happen".

Who would've thought that what Iwata was really doing was teasing Nintendoland....

I'll give you the Wii Fit thing. From the video we saw today, I saw absolutely nothing that has been added to that series. Pointless and I can't see people upgrading.

I still think the Mario family coop is going to be huge, as is the ability for people to stream the system without the television.

I think your right that could be a big deal we will just have to see if mom and dad think its worth it.

I dunno, people bought Wii Fit Plus in large numbers, and that had even less new content to offer than what I saw from Wii Fit U. An integration with your out-of-house workout routine would be a great addition to some people. We'll see how that goes.

At this point I'm thinking Nintendo should have stuck to the Wiimote and nunchuck as main control along with another traditional controller like the Pro.

As much as I want to like the gamepad, I don't see it being justified. It seems like only a few games are going to take complete advantage of it, and others will be maps and huds.

In that post, I wasn't talking about how the presentations were handled - though most have been awful frankly - but more to do with how little was revealed about support, for both the Wii U and Vita. Frankly, Vita barely being mentioned in Sony's presser? Either it's world class stupidity or they simply have nothing to show for it. Methinks that same issue is at the heart of Nintendo's conference...

Either they're remarkably stupid, or there isn't much to show. If there is a lot of show and they just chose not to show it? They're really ridiculously shit at this.

That's the perception I got. They would have shown at least ONE non-launch first-party game if the launch focus hadn't been deliberate.

I realize I'm getting kind of Defense Force-esque about this but I do think people have the wrong perception. Nintendo has two chances for damage control by the end of the show. Maybe they'll use them.

Nintendo made the cheapest HD games they possibly could. Every single game was pretty much a Dolphin game. Is Nintendoland a pack in game? I can't imagine anyone paying money for that cheaply made nonsense. It was Wiiplay level without the controller.

Clearly Nintendo's strategy is to not spend HD budgets on their WiiU games. Retro and Monolith may even be restricted heavily in budget.

And the whole going after the core market is a joke. Core gamers have NO reason to upgrade to WiiU from their PS360's when 85% of the best new multiplatform games are not coming to WiiU. Dolphin NSMB and Pikmin 3 isn't going to attract that kind of audience. EA and Activision must have got some serious beefs with Nintendo to completely snub the WiiU launch period like that.

I Almost feel sorry for UBI for giving a crap about the WiiU. They put effort into some nice games that are going to flop hard because core gamers will refuse to buy a HD console without the vast majority of the best 3rd party games coming out this year.

At least the 3DS looks have a fantastic 2nd and 3rd year with great support. I waited to buy until the price drop and I haven't for a second regretted that purchase. If a 3DSxl is announced tomorrow I will buy that as well because 3DS has the software that gamers want to play..........except the new Castlevania. That looked like garbage.

Just remembered that there were like 7 full threads of hype for the Wii U on the way to E3.

I think you guys jinxed it. Expect less next time.

Massive misstep if it's not a pack in. The Wii's success was in no small part down to having Wii Sports with it to show the capability of the control system. Seems Nintendo have forgotten everything they did right at the beginning of this generation.

Should be an OS level thing. Boot up, thats what you get but on the Wii-U Controller you get the classic Wii style HUD.

No Wii U specifications . flat games only Pikmin 3 and Zombie U interesting.

I guess if I play backwards the conference will have more fun.

So, about this conf...

I'll sound like a broken record or even worse a "i told you so" douchebag but...

Nintendo is fucking lost. Everything proves it. The simple face of this Nintendo guy showing with proud and excitement the most boring demo ever, to fucking close the show... The simple fact that these 50 years old guys could think it was a good idea to showcase the console like that, proves that they don't have a fucking clue anymore. They are badly disconnected from the gaming world, they just don't know...

Actually i think, as they are lost, they are blindly following the voices they hear in this dark room, but those voices scream everything, from make things for soccer moms to i love pikmin. So do shits and things randomly, cause this is fun without any sort of direction. So you have things for fans, which won't sell the console at all, and things that clearly screams "don't buy our shitty casual console you gamers, we don't want your money"

I know Nintendo is not doomed and has a lot of money, but maybe it's as unsinkable as the titanic after all... Cause after all those years, what Nintendo fans don't realize, in their love for the company, is that Nintendo isn't even making the best games anymore. This conf is the ultimate climax of the suicide mentality they've had for some years now. How can you even tell people you're going to reach, or even reconquer gamer's heart, when you worldwide launch your console with this kind of bullshit. More casual games than Sony and Microsoft united, boring and empty talks about how you're inventing social gaming... The simple fact that the only Shige appearance was at the beginning, for the Pikmin 3 showcase, and was meant to be the "gamer"s" moment, shows how much Nintendo is clueless...

It makes me think of an old grandma who doesn't really know how to talk with youngsters and some kid tells her "tell them yoooo" and she just uses it and everyone is laughing. Actually that's concretely how it feels to see Reggie using internet memes to get some laughs.

That's it, i think the console will have some cool things, and real games are probably coming, but the fact that Nintendo can think it's possible to hype a console at E3 this way, without ANY of the Nintendo ips that would just make everyone explode in semen, just by showcasing bullshit concepts and telling everyone they're back and about games.. This is just sickening.

I know they are stuck in a corner, cause they don't have free innovations to use anymore, and they don't want to directly compete with the money burners around, but here they're just sitting on their ass and waiting for the bullets...

That was my melting down i guess.

i'm the kind of guy to look for the positives in things, you know what i mean...

but WOW.

Nintendo, this was absolutely embarassing. Any chance of me getting a wiiU during the launch window has vanished into thin air.

absolutely horrible.

While MS and Sony were wowoing us with Halo 4 and the Last of Us.... Nintendo offers "NintendoLand" and about jack S*** else.

Absolutely saddening. Nintendo, you F'ed up something fierce.

I like the "We've got so many amazing games to show you for WiiU. I don't know how we'll fit it in the hour", remark at the start of the show.

They didn't fit all the games into 1 hour. In fact people were still confused when there were announcements outside the press conference despite Reggie slowly repeating it many times that there were other things on the website.

Hey now, Wii Fit added the new feature where if you lose your balance and step forward off of the board, you crush your new $100+ controller!

Edit: Also, I was planning on getting a Wii U for the kids for Christmas if it was available, but I will have a hard time justifying that now especially if it hits at a much higher price point.

Also, every year I know the nintendo conference will be filled with mario shit and children game looking crap. But I keep coming back to see if they redeem themselves. When I knew this conference would be about the WiiU I felt like there was finally hope for something interesting to be shown at a Ninentdo conference. But then they just showed more Mario and Home wannabe bullshit that nobody wants. Nobody wants Home either... why even try and copy it.

I've lost all faith in this company and will never watch another conference of these clowns again. Yeah whatever, they make millions of dollars on soccer moms and people who love 500 mario/zelda games. But they just don't even try to make something new... They even dare to say they have games for core gamers. They should know a core gamer will already have played Gotham City and ME3 on any of the other (superior looking) consoles or PC. Unless you count carrot lookalike things jumping from rock to rock over water a 'core' game.

Another note: it felt like reggi was talking 60% of the time, then 20% other people and 20% games were shown.

The screen on the controller adds cost. That means to sell for the same price, the guts of the console need to cost less. So they are sacrificing power - for the second gen in a row - for the sake of this screen. And they don't really have anything to show why it's a critical feature. As much as some might have hated waggle, at least wii sports got across the point of motion and looked different enough to sell the concept. For motion gaming this is actually a step backwards - I don't want to be flinging my arms around playing wii boxing with the control pad

I like the "We've got so many amazing games to show you for WiiU. I don't know how we'll fit it in the hour", remark at the start of the show.
Yeah that made a bad conference worse cause I think alot of people got their hopes up, especially after opening with Pikmin 3. I also felt like Reggie was talking extra slow to fill up time.

To be fair, they don't really need third party support to succeed. The Wii showed us that.

We still have no clue on whether they'll "need" UE4, either.

You do have every right to be pessimistic and bitter about Nintendo.

Always have. And always will. God, I wish I had Ace's phone number just to rub it in. And Poo's too. Then cry myself to sleep afterwards. I was so ready to buy this thing day one. Now Pokemon Black and White 2 is my most anticipated title of teh year.

They are in the Nintendogaf chat damage controlling if you want to rub it in.

man Skiesofwonder, if you're reading this, you were right... I definitely had my world ROCKED by the innovationz on display

And Pikmin 3 looks sort of like a Wii game that was upscaled and with a few 'special' effects added on like more DOF and shit. Way disappointed with that visually. Still looks fun, though

Except: SHAKE WIIMOTE TO CHARGE, *groan*

Except it doesn't, at all.

Just got up. Sounds like I missed a train wreck.

So all 3 manufacturer's conferences sucked huh?

All 3 played it pretty safe. Nothing amazing but still showing off their main titles that sells millions. Even with Nintendo showing off new tech, they played it ultra safe with Mario and Wii-like ports.

I expected more from Nintendo but I wonder how MS and Sony react now.

I posted this in the launch lineup thread, but I think Wii U is going to bomb pretty heavily in North America at launch.

No Madden.

No CoD

No high profile core Nintendo title.

I know Wii Fit and NSMB sold insanely well on Wii, but did either of those titles show enough for casuals to upgrade to a new system that will cost at least $300?

Horribly, horribly mismanaged company right now. No one had the foresight to move things with the Wii U along earlier and plan development around it. Instead they sunk heavy resources into a dead system and tied up huge franchises waiting for team leads to finish fringe handheld games. What the fuck is going on?

Yeah, I'm beginning to agree with this analysis.

They were already slow at delivering content to a SD system. Now with both a more intensive 3D handheld and an HD console they have to support, I think we're beginning to see the limits of Nintendo's development.

I know they're making some structural changes, but the company needs to be moving quicker than this. Having nothing to show of future first-party efforts doesn't engender much confidence in the progress they've made on Wii U development.

People hating on Pikmin 3's graphics? I thought they were gorgeous. *shrug*

What's really sad is that there have been fairly good concepts thrown around on GAF that are doable and would put the stuff they showed to shame, in terms of selling people on the touchscreen. It's all botched, so fucking uninspired.

Nevermind. I've left shock, I'm at disappointed now.

Next will be anger.

Acceptance will come when I remember there's a Guild Wars 2 beta this weekend.

don't forget guys Nintendo is doomed because everyone here hates Nintendo now!

The Wii U will bomb so hard it'll make the virtual boy blush.

after all we've always been right before, how the 3DS was doomed and the Vita would be the king.

Umm could somebody post link and times to the other Nintendo related events Im completley lost since I depended on the WUST threads all this time i could just go there and find out quick.

Seriously dude?

Repeat after me.

Pikmin 3 is a upport of a WII game.

NSMB isn't a graphical showcase. Common Sense.

How is such blatant trolling allowed? Nintendo has been expanding rapidly, not cutting back. They didn't show some games that I wish they did, those games are still coming.

What an embarrassing show for Nintendo.

Just like every year.

I went from insanely hyped to don't even care in a scant 60 minutes.

It's like 2006 all over again, but not for the reasons you think.

Remember what happened when we all groaned and said "oh man, that conference sucked"?

SMASH BROS. HAPPENED.

Can we at least wait til the end of the day for this shit, or are we going to prove that we never learn our lessons EVER?

Maybe WiiFit doesn't look very different, but I think NSMB is doing a lot of interesting stuff.

Even Wii got a COD port at launch...

N64 lack of 3rd party software
GC lack of 3rd party software
Wii lack of 3rd party software
Wii U lack of software

There really hasn't been as much hyperbole in this thread the last couple pages. In fact, your comment has been one of the most exaggerated ones.

And for what it's worth, 3DS is doing well, yes, but that's mostly because Japan is carrying it.

Nintendo isn't doooooomed and the Wii U will be fine when they actually find where all the games went, a la the 3DS.

Still, for nowwe have dissapointment. This is a big loss for them and us, and a HUGE missed opportunity. They had such a big chance with how poorly Sony and Microsoft did... and they blew it too. :(
