Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Wow. People really need to keep their hype meters serviced regularly. Some people expectation were apparently through the roof for this.

Can't believe people are offended by this.

And the fact they forget E3 is A WEEK LONG AND NOT JUST AN HOUR LONG CONFERENCE!

Regarding lack of EA Sports games on Wii U, just had a really funny thought. What if EA was pushing Nintendo to make Origin their online game provider (e.g. EA president at last year's E3 talking about Wii U online infrastructure), Nintendo decided to stay with the Wild West option (i.e. everyone do their own thing for online play), so EA withheld the sports titles in retaliation. Hard to imagine such a large third-party publisher "taking their ball and going home" when they don't get their way, but that'd certainly explain the turnaround from EA being at last year's conference to only ME3 being on Wii U for launch. The Xbox Smart Glass play-calling seems like a perfect fit for Wii U's pad, for example.

/conspiracy theory

:lol

I doubt that, but something had to happen behind the scenes.

For a console that's planning on launching this holiday that was poor showing. Go back and watch how awesome their 2006 E3 conference was.

Yea, something must have happened. The controller has a ton of different uses for sports games which would be awesome. I can just imagine Fifa with this thing, changing formation on the fly, drawing runs etc. Dammit EA, I WANT FIFA!! :(

FIFA was confirmed in a Eurogamer article a few weeks ago. It is just weird.

On the plus side:
- NSMB Wii U looking pretty good, none of that Mii nonsense, gorgeous backgrounds, cute baby yoshis, awesome squirrel suit
- Pikmin 3 I guess, eh.

On the minus side, everything else, including:
- Stupid NSMB 2 gimmick reminiscing of the raccoon tail clusterfuck in 3D Land. Stupid game with no co-op or versus mode that we know of so far. This is no SMB sequel.
- 3DS games WHO CARES YOU'VE GOT A WHOLE CONFERENCE FOR THAT TOMORROW
- Stupid "enhanced ports" of games everybody's already bought and played through
- Nothing about online, nothing about digital games (UWare and VC)
- Social crap that will enhance nobody's experience. It's also incredibly un-Nintendo-like in the sense that they're not even putting their own fun spin on the whole thing. It's just like Twitter or Facebook.
- Pacing and announcement order OMG. Nintendoland, really? Minigames need long presentations at the end of a conference now? Revealing the biggest games in the first few minutes? Demoing an already-released game (Batman)? Inviting people on stage who don't speak English really well? Reggie might be a PR mouthpiece (he's only good when the content is good) but at least he knows how to talk. He's a trained speaker. Guillemot and pals aren't. Reggie should talk for them.
- And many other things

I was always a Wii lover and a Wii U skeptic, but stuff like NSMB Wii U and all the scheduled conferences made me hope that the Wii U might actually be worth purchasing somewhere down the road by the end of the presentation. Instead, this conference has convinced me that Nintendo either doesn't know where the fuck it's going with this new system, or they're deliberately putting their wants and desires before consumer needs. They've got to be playing deaf.

How can you have so little to show when it's been a year since you first unveiled the system and the launch is upon us? How can you have so little to show when you've obviously abandoned Wii development for quite a while?

This makes me angry as a Wii owner, because I had hopes that the dirth of games these past 1.5 years meant more stuff for its successor. Instead I'm greeted with one must-have game and one mildly interesting one that could have been released for the Wii without much being lost in the process. In fact, one of them was scheduled for the Wii originally.

I...I can't believe this has happened.

Do you know what I was thinking in my head when E3 started for me?

Reggie was on stage, revealing Retro's game. We see a city, a regular day for the citizens. The crowd notices that the city looks very similar. Then we see a child in bed, we see him getting dressed, the crowd gasps and cheers when the boy reveals himself to be none other than Ness. The title screen pops up, revealing the game's title: "Earthbound HD". The trailer then shows the battle system, the classic humor, and at the end, we get a glimpse of a new, HD re-glorified Giygas. The crowd then goes wild.

But in the end, it was all just a simple pipe dream. :(

...

You honestly expected Earthbound at E3

...made by Retro?

...What?

Even I'm disappointed at the conference but even I didn't have too high of expectations. Geez.

Honestly, I watched the 2006 conference a month or so ago. I don't understand what people are saying. It wasn't that amazing.

You had Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid, Fire fucking Emblem, Excite Truck, and then Smash later. That is a lot better than this year.

Didn't realize having Mario Galaxy, Excite Truck, Metroid Prime 3, and SSBB at E3 is considered not amazing.

I don't remember Brawl at the conference, oh yeah because there is more to that E3 than the show. Most positive impressions for the Wii came from the showfloor and that's what I'm waiting for with this E3.

Oh, my bad sorry. Didn't realize 3 seconds of gameplay at an hour conference was amazing.

Yeah, it's better than showing a game called Nintendoland as a closer. I would take a fucking screenshot of the next Mario 3D title over 10 mins of that piece of shit.

You're correct, but I don't think they'll show anything else.

Their one event to relaunch the console featured almost no new games (Pikmin, ZombiU and Scribblenauts exempt). As great as we all know NSMBU will be, it can only do so much with that style, and it does nothing to show us what Wii-U can do and what it's all about.

It was all ports and expansion packs to PS3/360 releases and last years tech demos given new names. No EA sports or the yearly EA/Activision shooters? That shit is flat out worrying. If that was your expectation for a console re-unveiling, your expectation for a console launching this year, then I don't think its us who need to check our expectations for being too high, its you for having them so low.

I'll take it all back if they announce anything good during the rest of the week.

I wonder if people forget how entertaining Wii Sports was, or how many totally dismissed it and never played it. Nintendo Land could be amazing with proper online lobbies, leaderboards, and polished games. It's not like it'll be the only game carrying the system with Pikmin 3 and NSMB coming out.

Is it really that much to want say Starfox and F-Zero or one of them and the Retro game in the launch window ?.

We weren't even shown games in development...

They had that one hour show to blow Sony and MS away (being last after such average conferences from both couldn't have worked out any better) and they failed, plain and simple, giving precious stage time to Arkham City of all things.

An E3 1996 like 2 min video of all the big first party games in development right at the end would have made all the difference.

They said at E3 2011 Wii U was for both the core and the casual ... going by todays events they lied, looks like the Wii HD that should have been out for Xmas 2010.

That was beyond even the worst nightmares of most of the guys that posted in the speculation threads whether they want to admit it or not.

On par with PS360 confirmed going by today.

No need to have played it to realize it's waste of time. You enjoy your casualfest of minigames. Keep those goggles on, they do suit you.

Lol, I just didn't end up disappointed because I kept my hype levels in check. I was expecting Pikmin 3, and maybe a possible look at Retro's new title. That's it.

Never said the conference was good, I just find it hilarious how people are getting their knickers in a right twist over this. If by the end of the week the WiiU hasn't shown something truly impressive (i.e. don't make nice looking backdrops in Mario Bros be the highlight) then I'll say that Nintendo completely failed with this E3 in regard to the WiiU.

Also I only ever really get hyped for something during the run up to launch so they technically have till the end of this year to truly wow me.

Well, I did keep my expectations in check because they pretty much showed almost all of what I expected. They were missing quite of bit from their conference. As someone who wanted to invest in their console, I would have liked to know what they are working on for future release. Also third party support really seemed lacking, but I will hold my judgement on that until late next week after their event in Japan.

You really think if they had anything else amazing to show they wouldn't have shown it at the main conference ?.

Reggie said in the post interview that they were only showing launch / launch window games at E3, we have seen everything that is coming, your just setting yourself up for more disappointment if you think they are going to pull out Smash Bros or Mario Kart on the show floor...

Just half an hour to the game conference, that should take just an hour; what do you think we can realistically expect?
Something not announced yet hopefully?

Help me out- other than Smash in 2006, when has Nintendo released a surprise trailer after their E3 press conference?

Wow. We're really judging the wonderbook by its cover now.

I thought GAF was better than this. What happened to games for everyone.

Is anyone making a thread for Nintendo Wii U Developer Discussion? Its only like half an hour away.

Just make one if you want. If someone else does as well, they'll just merge it. It'll be nice to have everyone stop asking when the fucking conference is.

Who the hell has a meeting at 11:30pm local time? Nintendo apparently.

Anyways, didn't Nintendo mention they would be showing off 23 WiiU titles in their presser today? I only see 22 titles on Nintendo's e3 website. Can someone solve the mystery of the missing title?

So I'm probably late but in that Wii U Speculation thread Shikamaru Ninja said he had some info about a first party game that obviously wasn't talked about - have we found out what the mystery game was (or was supposed to be?)

Yeah, although they had a bad conference, it doesn't mean that the console will be a flop. I didn't really see anything that spelled dead-on-arrival for it, at least not from the conference video.

Hold on. This is from the FAQ thread:

Doesn't mention a 2:30 and a 9:00 roundtable.

The 11:30 PST is the recording of the roundtable starting in 22 minutes. They are keeping video of it under wraps til then
