Nintendo E3 plans detailed

Still feels like 3D Mario sells more systems than 2D ones but more people would buy a 2D Mario than a 3D one.
Not sure if there's any way to measure that data, though

Given sales of the Wii spiked when NSMBW came out, as did sales of the DS when NSMB, but sales of the 3DS spiked when 3d Land came out I'd say they all drive systems, with exiting 2d Mario over all out performing 3d ones.

GIVE IT TO ME!!!
don't think it'LL happen though, but I'LL accept a PoR echoes title ;)

Fire Emblem Echoes: Yeah, Sorry About Teasing You With Roy in Literally the First Localized Entry, Here's His Actual Game should come first.

Expect a CG teaser of the next Fire Emblem, if anything. I imagine Fire Emblem will use the Echoes line to bridge the gap between the next main entry i.e. Fates -> Echoes 1 -> Fire Emblem 2018 -> Echoes 2 (probably the Jugdral games or Sacred Stones) -> Fire Emblem 2020/21

3D Mario's always been big, but what's funny is that 2D Mario has always been bigger.

Jesus christ, look the sales of NSMB DS and Wii. They both sold like 30 million each while the 3D Marios of that era could only sell around 12 million at most. 2D Mario seemed to resonate far more with the general audience than the 3D games.

In hindsight, even though 3D Land and 3D World are good games, they sort of do seem like Nintendo's vain attempts in bringing the larger NSMB crowd over to the 3D series.

They've said as much, since Galaxy and pointed it out again in the lead up to 3d Land and 3d World. I mean Mario, as whole, has always been meant to be an all age, all skill level game, and that the approach SM64 took being so off putting to many who played 2d Mario was completely unexpected; and every 3d Mario up to this one has been attempt make a game that joins full 3d playing area with the broad appeal of 2d Mario.

This article is a good compilation of all the statements Nintendo's made about wanting to bring 3d Mario to the 2d Mario audience.

https://dromble.wordpress.com/2013/09/21/nintendos-frustrations-with-3d-mario/

Miyamoto continues, ““What we tried to do with Super Mario 3D Land, was try to create a Mario game that was set in a 3D world that fell somewhere between the openness of the Galaxy games and the sidescrolling of the new Super Mario Bros. games to create a 3D Mario game that a wider array of people could play. And we felt that, with Super Mario 3D Land, we managed to achieve that. So, what we wanted to do was extend that broader appealing 3D Mario game to Wii U in a way that allow more people to experience it. That’s what we chose for Super Mario 3D World this time. But we still have, obviously, the Galaxy series, and there’s a possibility that in the future we may look to explore what else we can do with the Galaxy series. For us, it was really about trying to find the right 3D Mario space in which we’re going to allow the widest audience to play.”

Heck I'll be honest for years I was one of those “3d Mario is wird and strange and not really Mario to me” Camp. I think its easy to forget how shocking SM64 could be for someone. I know my first encounter with it was nothing but confusion, and I've heard similar things from others. Here's my particular experience. The context was I didn't think I'd ever played any of SMB 2 USA, so I go up to this kiosk, at 9 or so and I bring with me an idea of what a Mario game from playing SMB, SMB3 SMW and the two Land games. So I'm at this kiosk and I look at this confusing controller and the d-pad isn't doing anything. I mange to figure out I have to use the strange stick thing in the middle, but right there I'm already sort of on edge I guess. Then I look at the game, which is in the courtyard, and where are the bottomless pits? And Enemies? And why are there no question mark blocks with power ups? I eventually made it to Bob-omb Battlefield and okay now there's things to do and Goombas. But still no question mark blocks , and the brick blocks look completely different and aren't floating, and Mario has a life bar? And where is the super Mushroom or fire flower?

And I walked away from that experience that what ever that game may say it was, it was not Mario. Now it took years but I did open up to it.

Natsume posted this on their Facebook a few days back:
We have more exciting E3 news to announce that will be sure to please Nintendo fans! Keep watching our Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram for additional game reveals and more as we count down the days to June 13th.

This is in addition to the Harvest Moon game they revealed a while back.

I think now that we live in a landscape where 2D and 3D Mario can both exist side-by-side, Nintendo just said "we're tired of spending money trying to find the middle ground where 2D Mario players will be happy with a 3D Mario game." And thus, Super Mario Odyssey looks to be something that doesn't compromise on the original vision for 3D Mario outlined by Mario 64.

I think there's room for both, certainly. Though I can certainly hope they start doing some things different with 2D Mario now that the NSMB aesthetic has been played the fuck out.

I think also 15 years of trying with ever more obvious attempts to make the 2d audience play 3d Mario, they've gone "whelp, we tried."

Even then Odyssey has the question mark blocks. Its a minor thing, but it does show that the extreme throwing way of iconic elements that SM64 took when it reinvented Mario from first principles is not coming back.

Yes.

I love all of them, but they clearly have a very different feel and structure compared to 64 and Sunshine.
Heh, its almost like this graphic was made becuase people cant properly explain the differences in game design between 3D Mario games.

Sooo they made they easy flow chart for yall to follow instead of saying 3D world and Galaxy games arent real 3D Mario games lol.

I did. Nintendoland is fucking awesome.

Agreed. I bought mine for Pikmin 3, but NintendoLand was a very welcome surprise... aside from Takamaru's Ninja Castle, anyways, LORD did I hate that part of the game due to issues with the controls. But I'd happily take another NintendoLand, albeit a reconfigured one to accommodate the lack of certain Wii U functionality.

I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks GAF. Won't have much internet connection :(. I wanna see megatons on the Switch. I have faith Nintendo will provide something

Nintendo gets me not-shitty Virtual Console and I'm there. I know asking for a transfer of my existing games is ludicrous at this point though.

I really wouldn't have anything other than Zelda and Odyssey to play though. That's just me though, I'm not that much into Mario Kart or Splatoon. I'd be all over Street Fighter, Bomberman, and Puyo Tetris if they weren't $40 each. Arms looks good I guess.

Honestly I'm still deciding between this and a GDP Win.

Hopefully the presentation brings you over to getting a Switch! Are you interested in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or possible Retro/Animal Crossing announcements?

This is random, but I've been reading up on Stardew Valley recently. Man, that game sounds cool. And apparently it's coming to the Switch this summer. Might have to pick that up. Reminds me of EarthBound, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon... I'm getting a lot of GOOD FEELS from it! And apparently they're adding multiplayer, although I don't know the game well enough to guess how that would work.

Everything you're feeling? It's exactly what you're hoping for :)

Switch has a pretty strong first year lineup from Nintendo, but it is heavily multiplayer oriented. As someone who likes local co-op but doesn't have people to play with and who isn't big on online multiplayer...the year looks a lot thinner.

I was crazy hooked on Zelda while that lasted and I've played Blaster Master and some Puyo Puyo...but mostly the device is waiting for Mario and I'm working on my 3DS back catalog and recent PS4 releases.

IDK. I really like the device and like using it. The hybrid feature is nice. I really liked being there launch day, which I've never been before. But...it isn't seeing as much use as I'd want to use it, which, given my gaming predilections I knew going in and I knew I was mostly buying it for Zelda now and then waiting for the ball to get rolling as far as core single-player Nintendo, Atlus, Capcom, SE, etc. goes.

I'd also probably try more of the indies though, if my back catalog wasn't calling me with more on-the-surface compelling stuff to play.

...

As to VC, I'm really hoping VC plus region free is a god-send and I'm also finally feeling like, yes, I'll rebuild my collection on a portable, modern device digitally. Haven't really dabbled in past VC.

I'm a little surprised I'm using the tabletop mode the most. I love just lying on my belly in bed, having the screen stand up upon the bed and holding the joycons in each my hands. It just works perfectly.

Yup those games lacked charm, creativity, and dare I say ambition by abusing the appeal of 2D Mario.

Funny thing is, people used to say Galaxy was part of the 64 and Sunshine model in order to dismiss the 3D- titles completely. Those who used their noggin for more than three seconds always pointed out that Galaxy was closer to the 3D- titles and the obvious first attempt of Nintendo going with a new direction for Mario platfomers in the 3D space.

It was a good day when that graphic came out.

Though apparently the "not true 3D" brigade still hasn't disbanded despite having all their arguments completely roasted. They're the UKIP after Brexit of gaming. There's no reason for them to still be here but they insist on lingering around.

I think that the success of botw and mario odyssey will make nintendo much more inclined to create more hardcore experiences. I think the many attempts to bridge the gap between 3d and 2d mario also made them see that they were probably losing the people that love 3d mario and not gaining the ones that love 2d mario.

I'm really happy that odyssey is a thing

I'm really hoping that a bunch of essential 3rd party games are announced for Switch... Tekken 7 has to be on Switch, COD WW2 has to be on Switch, RE7 Director's Cut or GOTY or whatever, Marvel VS Capcom and many others.
Practically all Japanese games are on UE4 and seem a perfect match for Switch.
E3 will say I'm sure.

Haven't been following the thread so excuse me if this has already been discussed but I hope they announce some new UI for the Switch. Not that the current one is ugly but it surely isn't the best when you start having several games with all the icons sitting in a line. Something akin to icon placement on the 3DS would be nice, really.

And if a firmware update would allow to use a BT headset, that's be swell.

I think they should offer the option to forever have the grid to see your games.

Buy more than 13 games and you sorta get that in a menu on the right side.

From point of writing it's a little more than two weeks until Nintendo Spotlight:

I am hoping to see the launch of Nintendo of Europe's E3 site this week (it still returns a 406 Not Acceptable, which I rarely see).

Bruh I'm still basically nowhere in Xenoblade 1 on the Wii. 20 hours in and still in the first town. Might try Xenogears first or something. Given up on Retro. Decided never to start an Animal Crossing again after trying out one of them and seeing the endless well it tries to pull you into.

Honestly I'll probably just keep playing Wii U stuff this year. Didn't get one till a year ago and I still have to finish Zelda and also play: Toad, Bayo 2, W101, 3D World, etc. I guess more of those types of 1st party games would have to arrive on Switch for me to get one. Mario Maker and Smash mainly.

Actually the biggest thing would have been 3DS/DS BC. My 3DS and even DS backlog is honestly shameful.

It makes sense for Nintendo to focus on that because that approach actually seems to be working as advertised in the commercials. It's not just another handheld friends can link together, but it's actually being used as a portable local MP "console."

Big AAA ports aren't really going to happen, but I hope western publishers take a look at their games which have this local MP potential: Fifa, Madden, Diablo 3, etc.

I got it from Reddit but the original source is /v/.

Just went on /v/ (I can't believe this) and they say it's allegedly from a gaming magazine's July issue...

If I had to give my two cents it's that Koffing looks really weird and the two Monoeyes are in the exact same pose/angle. But if this is fake it's really well-done. I guess we'll know in time.
