Anybody else think nintendo is going too swoop in and steal E3 from underneath sony and Microsoft?

I think the 1st party lineup Nintendo has is really impressive, and if the rumors are true and SSB 3d Mario are all Xmas titles, Nintendo could make a big recovery in both sales and marketing.
It's possible, if Microsoft doesn't earn back any good will for their DRM schemes and Sony's box is just as bad.

Could be like 2006 where Sony's conference was disastrous, Microsoft's was okay, but Nintendo, even with an underpowered console and gimmicky control scheme, generated serious hype for their console just by showing off games.

In the Jan Direct, they also still tried to sell you the launch window farce. The Direct shows afterwards have been great because they were for the 3DS, while the Wii U and the core fans that bought it were left in the cold without fucking shame by Nintendo.

The first Wii U Direct in months last time was also the worst they've had the whole year and the abscence of Wii Fit and similar shit is already pretty telling for E3. Seems like Iwata and the upper people at Nintendo fucked up management of going HD so badly, they can't even react to the (right now deserved) poor reception of the console, even if they wanted to. When they are done with finally cleaning up the goddamn launch window mess, you'll probably get some half assed Mario Kart and Wind Waker without proper gameplay changes.

Not sure if 3D Mario, maybe Retros Game and Wonderful 101 (which I should also be playing already...) can save anything really. One ,,surprise'' will also be Wii Sports, because Iwata doesn't yet realize it's audience is gone.
I'm surprised that so many can get hyped for the Wii U after they did everything wrong that could have went wrong and there are no signs of improvement. There main focus now clearly lies with the 3DS, which has an amazing lineup but hence ultimately killed way too many resources to also keep up the Wii U sadly. Right now it would have been the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to strike against MS/Sony with all that bad DRM talk etc, but I think they are literally unable to do so and sentiments of demanding Iwatas layoff don't seem too farfetched to me anymore.

It's only been 6 months, chill. The last direct was supposed to be boring, it's to get that stuff out of the way, now they can focus on the good stuff @ E3 Nintendo Direct

I think it's funny that you don't think Nintendo have surprises up their sleeves, you really think they are just gonna give up? Nah, desperate Nintendo = Epic games.

I dare you to reread your post after the E3 Nintendo Direct lol. ;)

I doubt both 3D Mario and Super Smash Bros. will release this year. Even considering the list of Wii U games that are probably in development, Microsoft and Sony could easily eclipse Nintendo.

My hype went to almost zero seeing those silhouettes.
3D Mario - awesome. Everything else we've already seen / known about for years!

Don't be so naive to believe that those silhouettes represent everything they'll show lol.

Yes. The other two have way more to prove to me than Nintendo does. The gaming community as a whole maybe doesn't see it that way but who am I to make fun of the less privileged :)

Not looking forward to the Reggie worship.

Hoping and praying for a gimmick-free Kirby game.

? What is a gimmick free Kirby game? You mean one that is exactly like the last one?

Kirby is ALL about the gimmicks.

I think it's possible to see the new 3D Mario this holiday season. Nintendo needs games to sell at the end of the year, or maybe they'll just go with Mario Kart.

Yup, and I assume there won't be any 7-8 min gameplay demos like their previous E3 presentations.

There also won't be talks about sales most likely. The Nintendo Directs seem to be more about showing off games than numbers. So even though it's only an hour they can fit in more games than they did in past years with the 2 hours they had before.

Lol, they haven't done sales talk at E3 in about four years. Really lazy when people say "oh and obviously we'll get the obligatory 10 minutes of sales talk", etc.

Yea, like they'd do that in a Direct LOL ... Sales talk at E3 exists because their investors are sitting in the audience. Nintendo has a separate event for that. People need to start living in the real world not in the "Nintendo = always worst case scenario" fantasy land.

since mario kart is a lot stronger, a black friday bundle would make sense. Then 3d mario for x-mas would seal the deal for a lot of people.

I wonder if they are going to announce any games that use a second gamepad and a price for buying a gamepad individually. That was one of the first things that was announced on stage last year, but we haven't heard anything about a second gamepad since.

There's no way GamePads aren't going to be sold without a bundled 'demo' game, right? Worked wonders for Wii Play/Wii Remote and Wii Sports Resort/Motion+. I'll never pay £100 for the controller alone, but chuck in something equivalent to what Link's Crossbow Training was to the zapper and I'll bite.

As we get closer to E3, I'm SO excited for the Nintendo Direct. I can't wait to see Mario 3D. Hopefully we see more of Windwaker HD which may end up being my GotY. So so excited. Also Sonic. GIMME GIMME!

I think the biggest chance for surprises lies within more collabs like Platinum and Sega. Since they were even overwhelmed by the Pikmin development apparently and had to get staff from other teams to help out there, I don't expect a steady flow of full fledged (non minigame) 1st party software in the vein of the 3DS or Wii anytime soon.

I'll gladly be wrong. Didn't happen to my pessimistic expectations since last year's E3 though, in fact it turned out much worse, so I can not give any trust to Iwata anymore :(

Do we know if Nintendo tends to release official artwork during E3? Can't remember if they do. I know they release screenshots, videos and boxarts but not sure about artwork.
I'd love to see some 3D Mario and Mario Kart CG images.

They do release official artwork during E3. The press site for E3 2012 provided artwork for seven first-party titles. And most third-party titles had artwork for download as well.

I'll make an out there prediction- Nintendo announces an absolutely insane cross over with a Japanese 3rd party. Like Kirby Musou or Pokemon X Monster Hunter or something.

I really hope there's more attractions for Nintendo land, 5 player is so damn fun, but we need more minigames!!

I agree, I think a Nintendoland DLC would be pretty cool. Especially if it added online multiplayer- it kind of sucks that you can't play some of the attractions on your own.

Thanks Rösti.
Actually, I was waiting for you to answer that.
Now I remember you shared the user and password to Nintendo's press site last year.
That's how I got all the Wii U hardware pics.
Hope you can do something like that again. Unlike some people, artwork is one of the few things I really admire from Nintendo.

So it's a game where Kirby runs through stages, destroying hordes of hapless enemies with a wide variety of attacks?

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I'm not sure what would kind of game you could make that would need three screens though? I guess something like NintendoLand 2, continuing with the asynchronous multiplayer stuff.
