I am Become Bilbo Baggins
Starting with this year, we have the 40th(!) anniversary of Mario.
Yes. 40 years. This is also the same year we get the Switch 2, so I'm expecting at the very least a new mainline game at the end of this year.
What the game will be is another question. I'm thinking it must have something to do with celebrating 40 years of Mario. It might also be open world, but I can't say I was a fan of Bowsers Fury, so I'm hoping for something more traditional. Either way, the 3D Mario games are some of the best games ever made, so there is no doubt it'll be a banger.
I'd also like to see a Mario 2D collection. Like an all-stars game, but with every 2D Mario game ever made. However, that seems like a longshot since most of the games are on NSO.
Next up we have Zelda, which also hits 40 next year.
I really don't think EPD will have a new mainline game ready in 2026. TOTK only released two years ago, but I do think Nintendo will celebrate this in style. What better way to do this than a remake of what is regarded as the best Zelda game, the classic Ocarina of Time, That would be massive, as in as massive as when Square announced a FF7 remake, but bigger. Done right, it would be a huge system seller, make Nintendo billions and bring about world peace. Maybe we also get some all-stars collections with Twilight Princess and Wind Waker.
2026 is also the 40th anniversary of Metroid.
We know Prime 4 is coming, which should launch with the Switch 2. Nintendo have never done anything before to celebrate Metroid, so I think the best we'll get is Prime 2 and 3 remasters, but I hope I'm wrong. Maybe a new 2D game like Dread as well would be nice.
Finally, we have Pokemon, that hits 30 next year.
This is the big one because Pokemon is still massive and rakes in the money. For games, Gen 10 must be a cert, but will GF redeem themselves, or will they mock their fans again and release a broken mess of a game?
Besides Gen 10, it's about time Nintendo and GF got the older games released either as standalone titles to buy, or bring them into NSO. A collection of the first three titles would be a massive seller, but maybe that makes too much sense?
What do you expect for these milestones? Any hopes, or will Nintendo just give Mario and Pokemon all the attention and forget the rest?
TL;DR - Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Metroid all have big birthdays coming up. What do you expect?
