Nintendo locks background music for empty open world in Metroid Prime 4 behind amiibo paywall

Yo this is crazy. We have reached peak Nintendo.
Can't wait to drive around breaking rocks

No problem, just buy the Amiibo for that!

If it was unlocking new background music tracks that would be one thing. But needing to buy this amiibo to have any music at all in those sections is hilarious.
That is just... sad. Making games used to be about making the best game you can. Selling background music separately? That is a dark place for gaming to go.

There was a time when people considered music art and when it was used in the context of a video game, it was deemed a crucial element of the experience. Imagine people trying to play this game in like 25 years from now. Is it the right way to drive through the desert with or without the music? Does it belong to the game? Will it be available at that time? Is it possible to preserve any of it?

i'm reading the game HAS background music in the desert and this amiibo stuff allows you to play bgm
from other areas like a music player…

fake news?

Falls pretty low on my list of locked Amiibo content. But to each to their own.
Imagine if ALL the music are locked behind Amiibos. Imagine if Nintendo games don't come with music out of the box and you had to pay for every track separately.

That is where you are going. As soon as you are willing to sacrifice the gaming experience to make money, the game experience can only go down.

Splatoon would be a very different game if its background music are not there by default.

Is there even a good reason as to why something like this should be locked behind a paywall at all?
No, same as there isn't a reason you should have to scan a plastic Ganondorf for a difficulty mode in Twilight Princess HD. It's all crap, some are just more crap than others.

That's where we're headed? This doesn't even unlock anything new. It allows you listen to the OST from other areas of the game while riding the bike. It's all already available in the game.

Imagine locking part of a soundtrack behind a plastic figurine. Whose brilliant idea was it to say "Yeah let's monetize the game's music"? This is shameless even by Nintendo standards.

I was annoyed when they locked a Hyrule Warriors 1 character weapon behind an Amiibo, and since then it seems they haven't gotten any better.

I'm strongly opposed to locking in-game content behind poxy little toys. It's scummy, wasteful, and made worse by the collectors that buy up all the limited stock. I don't know if that is still the case, but it once was.

I'd argue locking a difficulty setting behind the Ganondorf Amiibo in Twilight Princess HD was way worse than this.
Either way they're fighting for last place—no winners here.

One unlocks a difficulty setting that's not otherwise available in the game, the other unlocks a radio to listen to music that is all already available in the game.

One is a pretty clear "winner" to me. But that just my opinion of course.

It's insane that people will defend this type of thing, in this very thread.

It's not like they added some awesome new feature to the game or something, they literally stripped something out and then are trying to sell it back to you. This is worse than day 1 DLC, in my opinion.

"Let's make the experience worse for the player on purpose"

I agree as a direct comparison, but I wouldn't class the lesser of two evils as a winner. When we're talking about locking game content behind toys it's always going to be bottom of the list for me.

Both are stupid and outrageous and if Xbox or Sony pulled something like this they'd be absolutely crucified for it.

Entitled brats .

I actually want something way more substantial for buying the amiibo. Like a completely new suit. Make something really special not some lame music player.

Now, just wait for the usual 3-4 people of the Nintendo cult in here to start the usual and tired by now defence force and tell us that we're all "trolls" and "haters".

Imagine if Microsoft and/or Sony did the same thing, this thread would have already reached 20 pages mostly due to the usual suspects "concern trolling" - the very thing that they accuse others of.

Literally the most greedy company out there exceeding both MS and Sony by a long, long, long mile, Amiibos = physical DLC, worst refund policies in existence (even worse than Sony's if that's even possible), 80 Eurodollars pricetag for their always a generation behind hardware, terribad LCD fake HDR screen on a 450+ Eurodollars system, absolute laziness when it comes to BC games which are still stuck in 30fps and 540p/720p hell...

G'damn disgrace of a company, and the worst thing, their absolute dweeb minions eat it all up.

Got a switch 2 on day1 (unfortunately), can't wait to get rid of it - the final straws were the "you should read/watch reviews before buying a game from our store just to be sure" response I got upon asking for a refund for a game that kept crashing (Cookie cutter), the idiotic , still 60+ pricetag for 8 year old games and their absolute insufferable fanbase.

This is bordering on a scam, having to buy the amiibo to have music in the desert (which is the worst part of the game), Nintendo is taking usury to its users to another level.

Ah, music doesn't contribute to atmosphere now?
I am making a joke. A lot of reviews and people complained about the talking characters ruining the atmosphere and isolation, but now we are complaining about an obnoxious song playing in the background being locked behind an amiibo, which said song sure ruins the isolation and atmosphere of the game (imo). Its kinda contradictory.
