Nintendo aquired the Eye Shield 21 licence, plans to make game for DS and GC.
Mon., December 20, 2004 11:07

Nintendo acquired the copyright of the Eye Shield 21 comic at the Jump Fesita. The plan to put on the market for NINTENDO DS and the game cube.

The Eye Shields 21 comics deal with the American football of Riichiro an original and Inagaki, and Yusuke comics and Murata, The DS version uses a touch panel and becomes the game which values the fun of comics pleasantly also to those who do not know American football.

Although a sale day etc. is unknown, since that is right, doesn't it become the form in which animation will start in April, next year and which was united with it? It seems that a game cube is also put on the market although it is unknown for details.

Sorry for the Engrish.

Well, with this and JSS, it's obvious that Nintendo plans to not only enter the anime business, but to also integrate it's game business with anime, too.

nintendo could sell a shitload of software if they hit the right manga property.

(see Konami with Yu-Gi-Oh)

FUCK YEAH...FOR ME TO POOP ON.

What is this comic, anyway?

Wacky comic about a boy who can run really fast and got recruited to play American Football on his high school's team.
He wears an eyeshield on the field to conceal his identity, and his number is 21 - thus the title.

From what I gather from the covers.

A team of happy surgeons mistakenly transplant the hand of an evil finnish mastermind on a Japanese teenager. The surgeons enlist the help of a junior football team to 'tackle' the villain's evil plans.

Let's see how it turns out before we start whining (snapty).
I'd love a good anime/cartoon football game. I wonder who's developing this.

I think Nintendo will be the biggest Japanese anime company in the world in about 5-7 years.

All of these deals (the Jump Superstars game on the DS also, buying stock in Bandai) and also entering into the animation movie business themselves seems to indicate that's where they want to go.

Anime is huge in Japan right now (Miyazaki's films do bigger business in Japan than Pixar's stuff over here) and growing in popularity worldwide.

Instead of going through all the red tape of buying out Bandai or trying to buy out say Studio Ghibli, Yamauchi probably figures Nintendo has all the resources to be that (and bigger) on their own. With their own animation studio, they can now make their own movies, they have experience in merchandising with Pokemon already, and they can outbid smaller anime houses for licenses.

well ... if nintendo somehow succeed in creating some popular anime franchises (like naruto / one piece) then they are all set to regain their Gaming crown.

I guess anything's possible, but let me be the very first to show extreme skepticism. Hell, all they've done so far is LICENSED Japanese-animation properties, not actually bought or created any (outside possibly junk like Pokemon).

To say you're making a huge assumption is an understatement.

I think you guys are underestimating how huge of a deal it is that Nintendo now has their own animation studio (Nintendo Animation?).

They will likely get top tier talent to work there and will soon be able to make their own movies. In addition to licensing, they're far bigger than the likes of Bandai and Hasbro and what not.

They can flex a lot of muscle.

I think Yamauchi sees this as a way to sell more video games sure, but I also think he's genuine about moving Nintendo into other profitable sectors too. He's the one that told Iwata not to rely on past successes.

This new direction for nintendo seems to be making sence.

Anime's popularity is growing worldwide, and isnt seen as "teh kiddy".

This could be Nintendo's ticket to the top. Especially if Nintendo creates huge anime films and make games for them on their consoles only. WOW. This will be huge if they can pull it off. :D

i thought yamauchi's animated film was about a classical japanese poet. doesn't exactly sound like the next children's marketing fad. or maybe...poetmon! gotta catch 'em all! "wordsworth, i choose you! go trochaic hexameter ATTAAAAAAACK!"

I think they're going after more of a serious style, like Hayao Miyazaki's films, which are monster blockbusters over there.

We'll see though as apparently they haven't announced offically what the film will be about.

Well, it was fun entertaining the thought of Play Action Football DS for the time between when I clicked the title and when the thread finished loading :)
