'Nintendo plans to produce an animated film for release in 2006'

I'm guessing we'll see a lot of ^-^ type shit in this movie. No, fuck guessing, I KNOW this movie will have that cutesy bullshit.

All power to Nintendo though. They should stay as far away from pokemon as they can and make something new.
 
I am willing to bet that if Nintendo chooses to produce a movie based on the japanese poem that it will absolutely not be 'cutesy.' More likely VERY artistic.

I completely disagree. Nintendo, or I should say, Yamauchi, proposed this venture to expand Nintendo's appeal.

The japanese poem is supposedly the most popular japanese literature poem.

Regardless of what they decide, I'm very interested.
 
I hope they stay away from their franchises and establish something new. Sony, Microsoft, all have non-videogame divisions that are very successful. Nintendo making animated movies based on Mario and Pokeman is just one step further from licensing them out to other companies; not exactly breaking new grounds. Of course so far we know their first project will be based on a poem so I guess that's a good sign.

When I first heard this news I thought they wanted to establish a studio like BONES or Gonzo… :(
 
It should be adult Link and there should be implied sexual intercourse with Link and several serving wenches throughout the film.
 
That seems like a pretty small timeframe to make a motion picture, let alone when the talent/studio/resources haven't been set up yet, and they aren't even sure what it's going to be.

Considering the tremendous success of Miyizaki films, which are less cutesy and more deep and thoughtprovoking, I think it would be in Nintendo best interest to go with the one based on the Japanese poem, which would likely prove to be more in vein with the animation that is currently going over huge in Japan.
 
Every time somebody mentions this poem, do they have to say "Japanese poem"? Can't you just say "make it about the poem" or "yeah, I want to see the one about the haiku"?

Because I don't know it's name, but they have specified there is a specific poem they with to base a film on, I must generalize it to "The Japanese Poem" as a way of distinguishing it from Western Literature.

OSAKA - Nintendo Co. (TSE:7974) plans to produce movies

I don't know about anyone else, but this seems like they want to get into the movie business just in case they drop out of the video game industry

Nah, that's more of a synergy move. Movies increase the brands value which makes the games sell better.
 
It's not based on a "poem" its a famous historical collection of mideval Japanese poetry, each poem from a different person ranging from samurai to a monk.

They're more likely aiming to do something comparable to Mr. Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke), not Disney or Pixar.

Mr. Miyazaki's new anime in Japan is on pace to make more money than any of Pixar's CGI films have in North America. There's a huge market in Japan, they probably figure if they get popular enough there, they can then also expand overseas (just like they did with video games).

I don't think so. I mean they seem to be serious about this, and in general, video games don't turn into great movies, and in particular, Nintendo's franchises haven't turned into great movies. The Pokemon movies have turned a profit, but that's more because of the low production costs rather than gigantic box office numbers (and of course each release has done worse and worse). And obviouly they're not great movies in their own right.

If Nintendo is serious about making a good movie, I think the best thing would be to give themselves the freedom to look beyond just Nintendo's franchises. And at least so far, that's what they've indicated they're doing.

Why do you say that? If they make a movie that is not a Nintendo Brand, and it is successful, they would have game rights to make a game or sell for more profit.

Animation is not dead in Japan.

Miyazaki's new film might become the only movie since Titanic to make over $450 million in a single territory, and yes, that's more than any CGI film (Pixar or either the Shrek films) has done.
 
I sure wouldn't mind some anime based on some of Nintendo's ips. I've been wondering now for a while why I've never heard about any Metroid, Zelda, or Mario anime except for that OAV someone posted about a while back.

No, it's a sign that Eisner is an idiot, just as he's always been. Disney DID carve back it's animation studios to nearly nothing before... then Spielburg helped get Bluth's American Tale into theaters. The massive profits convinced Knucklehead Eisner that animation could be profitable... so he approved new development.

What happened this time is that the last few Disney films stunk, and Eisner is blaming it on a lack of demand for traditional animation... ignoring the fact that the Pixar films are better made than the Disney ones these days. Being the shortsighted fool that he is, he's decided to shut down most of the traditional animation departments and switch to all CGI instead.

To clear things up the name of the japanese poem Yamauchi wants Nintendo to make into a movie:

The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, an anthology of short classical Japanese poems between the 7th and 13th centuries.

I think it would be a really bold move on Nintendo's part to release something along these lines as their first movie. It would definitely mean that Nintendo would be headed more towards a Miyazaki style then Disney or Pixar, for their first film at least.

Yamauchi always made it clear that this movie production studio would create movies based on their videogames, and possibly games based on original movie characters.

I think this is a great move on Nintendo's part to extend themselves into new media. What I wonder is if Nintendo movies will have any influence on whether the Revolution will be able to play DVD/HDDVD/Bluray so that you could watch Nintendo movies on your Revolution. I think they'll probably stick to games only, but if they're branching into movies, why not have a game system that plays both your published games and movies?

I can't wait for more details on their first film!

Animation isn't dying, but Disney is. And this isn't an America-versus-Japan issue. Disney, regardless of its nationality, really is shitty nowadays.

I even like crap like Sponge Bob Square Pants more than pretty much any of Disney's animation nowadays. Their stuff is just SO corny, for lack of a better word. They have cows doing roundhouse kicks and stupid shit like that. And they always have smartass animals in their movies that are portrayed as being cunning or something.

Ugh, I'm getting a headache just thinking about how washed-up Disney has become.

I think their first movie should be about a futuristic amusement park where dinosaurs are brought to life through advanced cloning techniques.
 
But, but, disney made The Lion King!
If they are creating new original content stuff, with the possibility of games latter, then that sounds cool.
Having anime movies of mario or zelda wouldn't really help them branch out their gaming platforms.
