Nintendo Returns to Profit in First Half

From what I've seen at retail, the Mario Kart GCN Bundle is flying off the shelves. It's unlikely that they can catch up with XBox for 2004 sales, but there's still the very real possibility that GameCube will outsell XBox for November and/or December.

If Mrbob can use anecdotal evidence to prove nationwide trends, I can too.

I was in TRU briefly the other day, looking for a copy of DKC2. In my brief time in there, 4 Mario Kart GCN bundles were sold.

I'm pretty positive they've never made $1 billion in profit yet. These numbers may be a new high if they turn out... but then, my memories tend to be of the US$ equivalent rather than yen, so with those relations so fluctuous I'm not sure.

I believe their biggest net profit was over 100 billion yen in fiscal 2001, which would be slightly more than $1 billion at today's rates, though back then they were dealing with a weak yen instead of a weak dollar, so it was closer to $850 million when they posted it.

lockii: TRU is among the biggest sellers for GCs (if not THE biggest). Something that would hold a little more water would be Best Buy. I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't advertised this at all.

At Gamestop, I've only sold one PS2, and six PSOnes. Someone came in asking about an N-Gage, and that was pretty much it. No Xboxes, no Gamecubes, no GBAs (well, the guy asking for the PSOnes asked for the GBAs).

With no real mainstream games? The Xbox has at least 1 and the PS2 has at least 2. The GC has nothing that strikes the consumer as a DEFINITE purchase. And lets not forget the Xbox bundles too. I HIGHLY doubt the GC will come within 200K of the Xbox, and that's an understatement.

'The consumer' isn't merely that 16 old pimpleface with a lust for anything shooting and driving. It's also that soccermom, buying her 7 year old the cheapest console and everthing Spongebob, Shrek, Finding Nemo or randomn popular anime X related. Nintendo still has an appeal to that market, I might even say a bigger appeal than Xbox has.

Oh please. Those mothers buy their kids GBAs nowadays. The segment that buys GCs for that reason is about as small as the amount of people who buy Xboxes to put Linux on it and run it as a home PC.

If your talking about the Mario Kart Bundle they HAVE BEEN advertising it. Watch Sportscenter for an hour and you'll see the commercial for it five or six times. That's the only place I've seen it on tv but they play it to the point where I'm starting to get sick of it.

This is true, im always getting parents buying GBAs for thier kids. ITs a strong market and im even surprised with the amount of GBAs i sell on my shift. But the sad thing is the parents dont know what games to buy, i try my hardest to school them on apropriet quality GBA software, and at times it works. I tend to plug Rare the most though, DKC games will be doing some good numbers ay my store :D

thats good news ..

Nintendo needs to advertise A LOT ..

If anybody is interested they have been playing the Double Dash commercial nonstop on Spike TV during the James Bond marathon....

I just caught the Mario Kart thing on X-Play.

Funny, we had 25 DSes for launch, they all sold out, and a second shipment this week came in that we all sold out of today (I don't know how much the second shipment was- but they sold 5 systems the 4 hours I was there, and it wasn't even busy). Then at about 11:00, we got 9-15 more systems in. These things are selling like crazy.

Somebody came in today and bought 12 GBAs, 4 GBCs, 16 N64 games, 16 GBA games, and 4 PSX controllers. It was nuts.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah-- Nintendo keeps making money -- Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah-- My system of choice, company has never made a profit --Waaaaah
Waaaaaaaaaah-- At this rate Nintendo will almost never die out -- Waaaaaaaaaaaah

Artie Lange would have a field day here.

Nintendo profits will only raise this holiday season ..

DS = New system, limited quantities, and its selling like crazy
GBA = more sales for some ODD reason
GC = well decent sales, and I'm sure the MKDD bundle will help it alot

games:

-Echoes
-Mario Tennis
-Mario Party 6

thats more than enough to warant great profits ...

Someone a week ago came in and bought 6 PSOnes (all we had). The only new systems I've ever seen sold at our store are GBA SPs and DSes.

Actually, it was more like 11 games, I think these were the N64 ones (or most of them anyway).

Super Mario 64
Super Mario 64 (yes, he bought it twice)
Mario Kart 64
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Mario Party
Mega Man 64
Kirby 64
Mortal Kombat 4
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Super Smash Bros.

Same guy bought Wario Land 4 twice.
