Nintendo will win the next gaming console race. It may take a while after the all three consoles have been launched, but it will happen. The reason why Nintendo will win stems from where the three console makers have come from and their vision of the future of gaming. Nintendo is and always has been a gaming company starting off with the NES and the GameBoy. Games and gaming is their core, it’s what they are all about. On the other hand, Sony and Microsoft are both companies that started off in technological fields (hardware and software) and then added gaming to its core. That is the fundamental difference between the three. That’s why both Microsoft and Sony spend so much time worrying about the hardware and the polygon-processing numbers that their respective machines can crunch out while Nintendo only worries about whether or not the hardware can allow them to create the games they envisioned in their minds.

Microsoft and Sony both come at the game industry with technology in the front of their minds. Issues like which high-definition format should our machine support, what kind of online connectivity it should have, how big should the hard drive be. Those are all technical questions that have very little if anything to do with the essence of a video game. Nintendo could care less about their next system playing DVD’s, having the fastest GPU, or having USB ports. All they care about is whether or not their little box has enough juice to run great looking games that are fun to play.

So why is Nintendo in last place with their Game Cube if they are so great at making games? The answer is simply because the gamers that grew up with NES and SNES aren’t young anymore. Mario, Link, Yoshi, Toad, those icons are the first thing gamers think of when they think of Nintendo and quite frankly they are a little too kiddish to be cool anymore. They (myself included) have greater interest in more mature games and Microsoft and Sony both stole Nintendo’s first generation audience away from them. Nintendo failed to recognize this and is why they have taken quite a hit. But Nintendo has learned from their mistakes and this leads me up to my main argument as to why Nintendo will succeed with the Revolution.

The definition of "mature" changes in regards to the console in question.
 
After seeing the DS's thorough stand being made against the PSP, it's really hard not to draw all sorts of analogues to the home console.

The main difference is that people are probably willing to spend a bit more on console gaming than handheld gaming, but soaring development costs and internationally stalled market growth is going to make this a generation full of losers. If the DS' success can be extrapolated to consoles at all, the Revolution might have a decent chance of outperforming expectations powerfully.

However, you can't really predict with a straight face that Revolution would beat 360/PS3 on a level playing field. That's just not possible. The market will NEED to go through a pretty severe recession for that to happen in America/Europe, and I don't think we'll start to see anything nearly as bad as what we're seeing in Japan now for another few years.
 
I still think the Revolution will do so much better in Japan than what is expected. The GC looked promising in terms of outpacing the N64 until the spring of 2004 when Nintendo just let sales plummet without taking the best measures to insure that they didn't. I think the fact the system is three DVD cases small and the downloadable library as well as GC compatibility will make it a very popular system with Japanese gamers who only bought a PSone and PS2 - especially as far as price is concerned.

Call this a longshot, but I don't think 8 - 10 million Japanese Revolutions sold will be impossible by the end of its lifespan. Which would alone probably insure worldwide dominance of the Rev over the GC, which looks to cap out at 22 Million units unless Nintendo plans on making it a $50 budget console.
 
Handheld and console gaming are two different things. So, although the Rev. will be different like the DS, they're no guarantee it'll conquer Japan based on that sole characteristic.

However, I have no doubt in my mind that the Rev. would surpass the GC in Japan. The BC ability alone would sell millions more than the GC, imo.
 
Hmm, I wonder who will use the RevCon.. as a new-age Dildo. With the various attachements, think of all the narly possibilities... :D !!

If you've listened to any of the recent Reggie speeches or interviews, Nintendo is making that precisely their point. If the playing field was going to be unbalanced anyway, by Sony and Microsoft coming in as mindshare leaders, Nintendo is causing further unbalance by developing such an eccentric controller. This could potentially create an instance where Nintendo has successfully seceded from the norm (with the help of DS) and created a whole different segment of mindshare.

Also, as Nintendo likely knows what the situation at the end of this generation is, I believe they are positioning themselves as an "and" console. When many consumers look at Xbox 360's $400 price tag, and Sony's looming similar-if-not-higher price tag, they look at it in terms of buying one or the other. If Nintendo comes in under the radar with a relatively cheap, approachable console coupled with a new gameplay dynamic that the other two don't offer, they might arrive at a point where consumers who bought a PS3 or 360 will give it a closer look.

Right now, Nintendo consoles sell generally to Nintendo fans and younger people. By creating something approachable, cheap, unique, and very nice looking I might add, they can potentially increase their userbase to not only people who don't play games regularly, but also to both camps who have placed their flag squarely in Sony or Microsoft territory for the generation. Even if the owners of the other consoles don't know they've done that.

Another factor is the virtual console for Revolution. Yes, XBLA is running parallel to that in a sense, but we do not yet know Nintendo's full plans for it. Downloadable games, sure, but from who? Merrick says the usual characters, which could mean Square-Enix, Capcom, Konami, et al. who made games primarily for Nintendo pre-Sony. That is a lot of weight in classic gaming to be thrown around, and if it's advertised properly, people will learn of it and might remember classic games they enjoyed.

What may seem as missteps to some people (i.e. strange controller, less powerful machine) may be deliberate strides by Nintendo. It's interesting, to be sure.

A lot does still hinge on the power I believe, because everyone wants to see an upgrade worthy of more money. It's important, but it's not necessarily make-or-break in any case. If it was, PSP would by all means be dominating the entire handheld landscape, as Nintendo has consistently used old technology for their portable lines.

It's a small console which obviously limits certain things, but it's not as if 100% of the GCN was made up of graphics chips and processors. Much of it was the disc drive and expansion ports on the bottom of the console. They fit comparable power in a smaller space, and made the console itself profitable. What they achieved is impressive, and it's not completely out of line to for a similar task to be performed here.

I'm far too lazy to make all that bullshit hand movements just to play a game, I'm sure most OAP's won't be too thrilled to get RSI playing Mario & Luigi in Power Glove Quest IV.

You don't have to wave the controller in front of a television wildly for it to work properly. Slight movements are all that's required and it's been stated numerous times by people that have actually used the damn thing.

I think grandma and grandpa will probably happily try out the revmote and enjoy some of the quirky stuff. However, I don't think they will rush out and buy it. That's the problem I see.

Nintendo hasn't shown squat, or anounced anything. Am I as a consumer interested in the Revolution at all ? Not yet I'm not.

it's impossible to estimate revolution's sales without seeing the games and what happens next gen with 360 and ps3. it's also difficult to extrapolate success because the ds has sold so well.

however, from a personal point of view, i'm growing more and more bored of playing the same games with better graphics. there's the notion that all this processing power will make games more immersive, more realistic and therefore better. i disagree, because the fundamental gameplay is the same and precisely the thing i'm tiring of. the whole idea of completing a load of levels to get to an end boss is tired, and something i'm not willing to do unless i'm convinced the game will be exceptional. even then, i have to really motivate myself to be enthused, and i think many gamers feel this way.

i'm thrilled about revolution. not just because of the controller but equally, if not more, because nintendo has said they are working on new types of games and new ways to play existing games.

i'm playing videogames less than i ever have, but when i do play the only console i'm drawn to is the ds and the reality is i enjoy everything about this. not just the ds games but playing games less and having more time to devote to other things.

as i learn more about the ps3 and xbox 360 i see games and the whole gaming experience becoming more complicated, which is something i don't want.

Nintendo should communicate some more elements about revolution,
'cause i know a lot of my friends that are interested in revolution, but hype is decreasing with XBOX 360 launch, and they hesitate to wait for Nintendo's system or have fun for christmas with a 360...and they won't buy another system next year...

Nintendo, we need to SEE something, hurry up !

The reason why hardly anyone writes articles about rev is because Nintebndo have hardly released any information. Only the shape of the console, a couple of features and the controller have been revealed. Apart from that nothing has bee said. Wwe have not even been shown any games in development and that really does suck. If Nintendo want to earn more respect for what they are doing, they need to show the people that they are making something great, becuase at the moment we have all been kept in the shadows.

Pretty much what I was saying. I'm also willing to bank that the people who've given up on gaming might see something they like in Revolution, and while I'm excited about it, I sure as hell am not going to go out and recommend it to people before seeing any software for it. Who knows, might be an entire dud.

But if you just look at the PR spin that Nintendo's spewing and the "philosophy" behind it, I'm totally down for what they're peddling. Even if no one else buys a Revolution on earth, it'll be cool to know that somebody out there made a console just for me.
 
have Nintendo made any statements about when they plan to unveil some games? Its really annoying that Nintendo have not released any media for any revo game yet. They better do something soon.
 
Nintendo will be the king again when in a Mario Kart there is no weapon that once it locks onto its target, there is no stopping it. As soon as it is launched, it will fly through the air and seek out for the first place. That's killing the super mario kart (best game evah) esence.

Then, Nintendo will be my King again.

You guys are giving Square a little too much credit... They were important but not THAT important. Several Nintendo first party games on N64 outsold FF games.

Playstation's superior 3rd party support in general is what made it more popular. And yes CD's have a lot to do with that along with lower license fees.
