Nintendo: Satoru Iwata's TGS speech webcast [translated]

LOL @ the translator going from neutral to 6th gear when Kojima was on screen -- the translator couldn't keep up with his quicksilver speech! good viewing in all.

interestingly -- the Brain Training game for the DS (or was it the other variant?) took only 10 devs at its peak development cycle and was completed in about 4 months counting 2 holiday seasons. very impressive: minimal effort, max sales.

finally, nintendo is keenly aware in retaining and further challenging what it calls "veteran" gamers and iwata's keynote talked about how the entire pointer+analog stick setup can sit in a traditional shell, such that past titles and third-party software can both be enjoyed.

amazing to hear the short dev time and team size for brain training.

having kawazu, kojima and hori talk so highly about revolution and developing games is great.

i imagine kawazu's is crystal chronicles.

:lol :lol :lol

Holy shit that was hysterical. The dub sounds like it was done by Iwata.

I know a lot of you will think I'm being dramatic and/or a fanboy, but Nintendo is literally saving the industry.

The graph of the declining hardware sales rate shows that much of the industry's so-called growth is inflated and based on hype. Industries such as that are not healthy, as has been shown numerous times in history.

If it was only Sony and Microsoft, a crash would have come in a generation or two.

Is this the graph you mean?

Because if it is it's a bit deceptive.

1) It only shows late April to early September (less than 5 months) sales for each year without mentioning how the hardware sales did the rest of the year.

2) Handheld numbers went from 1 handheld (GBA, the WonderSwan Crystal only had 47K the entire year in 2003 and was a non-factor) to 3 handhelds (GBA, DS, PSP).

3) It's measuring the value in Yen for those periods while consoles were getting price cuts and handhelds were getting more expensive because of the two new ones.

I don't know but Nintendo's press release linked to it.
DID YOU KNOW? WEBCAST OF ‘REVOLUTION'-ARY NINTENDO KEYNOTE ADDRESS IS NOW AVAILABLE

Sept. 16, 2005

A webcast of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show on Friday is now available. To view the English translation of the speech, log onto www.irwebcasting.com/050916/03/index.html.

During the speech, Iwata for the first time introduced the controller for Nintendo's next home video game console, code-named Revolution. Nintendo breaks with more than 20 years of video game history by abandoning the traditional controller held with two hands and introducing an all-new freehand-style unit held with one hand. When picked up and pointed at the screen, the controller provides lightning-quick interaction, sensing motion, depth, positioning and targeting dictated by movement of the controller itself.

The thing that convinced me that the Revolution is going to be a hit were those developer comments. It seems like Kojima is really interested in the Revolution, I think if he had the choice to make a new next gen game, he'd decided to make it on the Revolution.

A few points.

Iwata thinks,

Nintendo needs to be able to surprise gamers to keep games interesting.

Nintendo was interested in creating 'a new starting line' ie levelling the playing field for both advanced and novice players.

That Nintendo also will create sophisticated games for hardcore players but will use the new controller to allow them to have a fresh experience.

I definitely agree with number 1, number 2 follows since we'll all have to learn to use this thing (not that I expect it to be very difficult) and number 3 should allay some of the fears about games being short and 'gimmicky'.

I'm always happy to hear people like Kojima praising Revolution but really it doesn't mean much to me. It's ALL moneyhats in the end people, don't get your hopes up so much.

Even this past gen, didn't Kojima praise Nintendo's philosophies etc.? Seriously, it means jack shit.

yeah, same thing from square, expect nothing more than CC, maybe, MAYBE, a ff11 port, but I really doubt it

edit: of course, there's always the possibilty of a PARADIGM SHIFT, and 3rd parties will fall in love with the revomote

I think Nintendos fate in America rests on 2 things:

1. launching with an FPS.
2. the controller really is "the bomb" for FPS genre.

how is it going to demo in stores?

I just saw this and i couldn't stop laughing :lol

have any big (western) FPS developers commented on the controller yet?

Wow, that's awesome that they had Iwata do the voiceover for the English version of the video there. No room for anyone to say it was mistranslated, now. ;p

Hey I didn't think of that...that is clever. Who were the other 2 developers (besides Kojima) who talked about the Revolution?

the first was:

akitoshi kawazu - square enix - final fantasy crystal chronicles

the third was:

yuji hori - square enix - dragon's quest

Whatever happened with that Dragon Quest rumor from a few days ago? Why would anyone believe DQ would come to Revolution...
i don't think dragon's quest would go to revolution, but i believe yuji hori is working on something for revolution. kojima also. they wouldn't be in the speech, especially on video, vindicating the new interface.

iirc john carmack said something like "nintendo is really onto something with the revolution controller".

i've been looking but couldn't find where i read it. i can't remember if it was something he definitely said, or something he was supposed to say.
