Nintendo Switch 2 is selling at least three times faster than Switch 1 in Japan

Nintendo Switch 2 has broken PS2's first-month sales record in Japan.

According to data supplied by Famitsu (reported by Yomiuri) the console has reportedly sold at least 1.5 million units in Japan during its first month. It's worth noting, as highlighted by Katan Games' Dr. Serkan Toto, this doesn't include units sold by Nintendo themselves; therefore, the number is likely much higher.

Famitsu collects data from over 3,000 Japanese retail stores. According to this data, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 1,538,260 units in its first month, the highest sales for any console in Japan since the publication began collecting data in 1996.

The Game Boy Advance previously held the record for Nintendo machines, selling 1,367,433 units in its first month, followed by the Nintendo DS at 1,269,846.

The Switch 2's sales figure indicates it's selling at least three times faster than the original Switch in Japan, which managed 556,633 units during the same period. The best first-month sales for a non-Nintendo system was 1,134,862 units, which the PS2 managed in 2000.

I guess Nintendo doing well in Japan isn't really a surprise, but still, the extent of the success is notable.

Of course, they are incapable of enjoying normal consoles out there, and pc was always dead. Japan is the only place i see mobile still doing very well. In the EU, NA, i see sales slowing down by a decent amount in the next year.

Depends on the Software. If they have Mario + a couple more 1st party ready for next year and 3rd party games start coming at a decent clip then I don't see things slowing down that much at all.

Switch 2 sales slowing down any minute now. Just wait and see. By this time next year, Nintendo will probably discontinue it and pack up shop.

Meanwhile in alternate reality.

It's honestly really hard to believe these people are sincere about what they say. It must be a self-induced lobotomy so that they can push this content out.

Nobody with a brain functioning enough to make a Youtube video can say these kinds of things with a straight face. "No it didn't do 200k that week, I thought it would only do 180ish, but no it ONLY did 152k! DK was unable to "save" the Switch 2 from poor sales!" give me a break.

and there's still Pokemon A-Z later this year :messenger_fire:
How can anyone be hyped for another less than medíocre pokémon game is beyond me... But ll sell millions of copies and gamefreak/Nintendo ll continue to do the bare minimum with this franchise.

How can you know it will? There are 10s of millions of Switch 1 owners. If a small fraction want the Switch 2 and they produced more than the Switch 1 because the Switch 1 sold 13 or more times as much as the WiiU then of course it is going to have a record launch. What happens a few months or years later is another story, though Japan does have the cheap Japan only model.

I'm honestly guessing the majority of people here aren't that hyped for it. When I first played Pokemon I was a kid. That's where all the sales will come from. With Z-A, the big news seems to be that the game is no longer a total technical mess, so that's nice. I haven't tried it (nor own it) but I heard Switch 2 made the last game MUCH more playable. Game Freak made a very successful Game Boy title and just scaled very slowly from there, they kinda suck. But it's not a matter of "Nintendo doing the bare minimum".

Edit: ok you did mention GameFreak, my bad

I wonder if this one is changing tune? Or ever revisited the sales in a video and say he's wrong? Naw
The Switch 2 is readily available from all major retailers less than 2 months after launch. It may actually be a flop compared to the hype and Switch 1. It may just be that they are still delivering ones that were made a few months ago and rushed them to the US to avoid tariffs. We don't know yet, but we do know I can drive to 6 Targets to get one today and can order online from BB, Walmart, and Target for delivery this week and that has been true for days.

In recent history every console has sold out for months after launch. This means if more were available early, they would have sold more. All this early Switch 2 data shows is that more were available than other consoles. Even the WiiU sold out at launch.

Give it a until after the holidays to get a better picture.

PC is growing in Japan. Its doing well. Who told you pc is dead in Japan?

Ok, fair enough, i don't know if it will sell as much as Switch1 but i believe in it.

No shit. Japan is the territory of Nintendo.
What will really surprising me is the global sales, aka, sales outside the usual vangloried countries. If the global sales equals the Switch 1 sales, then its gonna surprises and amazes me. But for now? Thats pretty much expected.

I mean the Japanese for the most part tend to have a bias towards Japanese hardware developers anyway....(that's why Microsoft never cracked Japan..) so this "success" story is a given....

Too soon to tell. Switch benefited a lot because of covid during those 2 years, plus their competitors couldn't produce significant amounts of consoles during that period. It was a perfect storm for them.

I also believe that the fact they don't have shortages this time around allows them to sell much more and faster.

The console could peak much earlier due to these two reasons alone. Time will tell.

Nintendo is making people become retarded

stock is higher than previous console releases

I can't tell if you're just really dumb or are purposely not acknowledging that

Edit: lol I just noticed your tag, it's perfect

im curious as to what your definition of 'flop' is

Mobile is still growing in all regions, not just Japan. As for the Switch 2, I lean toward the price being a factor once the holidays are over and sales slowing. I have no problem being wrong about that but I think $450+ pushes it beyond an impulse buy.
