Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

I'm so mad. I can't BELIEVE Nintendo thought the Switch was in a good state for release just because the hardware is in good working condition (although even that's in question now with the Joy-Con problems some are having). The is easily the LEAST functional system UI I've seen in so long. Literally all you'll be able to do on this thing at launch is play a game, use the store, take screenshots, and look at system announcements. And the launch lineup is paltry. The only real game of note is Zelda, which is simultaneously being released on Wii U. I like minigame collections a lot, but 1-2 Switch looks abysmal.

It's very disappointing. That's for sure. And the no Virtual Console at launch thing is just icing on the terrible terrible cake.

You're too surprised, this is a console launch man, thats all you ever get. I've been there for PSP, VIta, PS3 and PS4 launch and every single one was similar. You have to be fine with a drought as well. And buggy software/hardware, a UI that will be good enough, getting shafted by price drops, games that are marked up high as fuck for no reason.

Everything is console launch norm bro, strap into your seat its only getting worse from here.

If the day one patch doesn't fix the issue and it's a constant hardware issue, I'm going to be pissed. Dying in Zelda due to controller issues will be annoying.

There's not a chance this will be in the final firmware. Nintendo's quality control is generally on point and this is way too major an issue to not be addressed day one.
Wii U's launch was rough. Constant hard crashes that required me to unplug and replug in my system that happened when I entered or left an application or game. Happened almost every play session. Took a solid year of Nintendo's patches to stop it happening entirely.

I'm confused. I looked at all that's included with the Switch and there is no charger capable included at all. Basically, the only way to charge the joy-cons, right out of the box, is to attach them to the main unit and dock it while it's powered on? Trying to figure out if I need to get the charging grip now. :-/

Yeah, but you get 20 hours per charge. Put them on the main docked unit at night a couple of times a week and you'll never even notice low batteries.

But, totally up to you. Personally I don't expect to buy the joycon charger grip thingie.

it comes with a 40 hours battery and is rechargable out of the box?
Yep. And it also works on PC's.

"Cut through the fanboy nonsense"? What the hell are you talking about? I'm just saying there are real issues and there are non-issues so it's better to focus attention (and consequently, Nintendo's) on something like a joycon desync rather than a lack of a browser. Quit projecting.

"Real issues" is subjective. The Switch is the first game system to launch without a web browser in HOW long?

These operating on Bluetooth? Tons of people have a lot of interference that they don't realize. Happens with DS4 controller all the time; now it doesn't de-sync but it becomes unplayable. I had the problem with a USB stick plugged into the PS4 leaking emissions.

Literally the only thing we did not know about the system before today is the desync issues. I don't know how you think it somehow "got worse" in the last 2 hours.
See, people had some gifs prepared for the occasion.

Eeeeeh
Xbox One launch was completely botched since their E3 announcements, far worse than most console launch I remember. Even them recognized that : http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Xb...re-Avoidable-Former-Xbox-Boss-Says-83947.html
PS4 had that famous Blue Light issue, which bricked a lot of consoles. It wasn't a widespread issue but still a present and troublesome one :

Not to say that it's an excuse for the Switch to not launch with features, but people should expect that buying a console at launch means not having everything fine since the start.
Again, no basic video apps and one actual game don't make for a real launch. The PS4 and Xbone launched with a solid lineup of games and had full basic app support.

Make sure to put your phones elsewhere when you play in case of interference.

Go to another room when you need to use voice chat ;)

Mmmm..bagel launch.

Fair enough.

It's not projecting, it's mocking the fact that you act like the arbiter of what's important or "real issues."

Basically everything I'm reading is in line with my expectations, so all of this sounds fine to me. I spend about 1% of my gaming time in the OS, so as long as the thing boots up and plays games, I'm fine with that. I have my TV and iPad for Netflix, and rarely ever use anything but those two devices for it.

I'll almost never be playing the system with joycon detached since I'm getting a Pro Controller, and would prefer to use that at home anyways, so even the sync issue doesn't bother me. Of course that should definitely be fixed for those who will. I am also gettong 1-2-Switch though, so I guess I'll see firsthand how that goes with friends.

I'd like VC, but when I look at the number of VC games I've purchased ever, it's about a total of 9, a majority of which are those games Nintendo sold for $.99 on the Wii U when they came out.

Yeah the desync issues are the only thing concerning me right now. When I played the Switch at one of the UK tour events there wasn't anything like that in any controller configuration, so I'm hoping it's just a software issue that'll be fixed on launch. It's definitely weird that it's only cropped up now - hundreds of people have used the Switch by now, and if it's something like an issue with bluetooth interference surely it should have been, if anything, *more* pronounced at the preview events, given how many people and other devices were there.

The Xbox One controller uses a form of Wifi for wireless connectivity and can be a pain in the ass if your console or the controller are near a router. I used to live in a small apartment with my Xbox and router in the same room. Every 20 minutes or so the controller would just de-sync and connect on it's own randomly.

I have had multiple routers within 3 feet of my xbox one since launch and have never had an issue with controllers.

I'm just hoping this joy con issue is some extreme example. Ordered the pro controller, but still.

Why should I want a web browser for my gaming console when I always have my phone (or my laptop at home) near me for a much better experience ? You are not buying an extra piece of hardware just to go on the web, that's not really an important issue.

(And it could still launch later...)

3DS had horrible OS issues too. Lots of crashes and slow loads. One time mine crashed so hard I couldn't turn it off. Holding the power button for even several minutes did nothing. Literally had to just let it die.

Has there been any confirmation from these previews that you can listen to game sound with wired headphones while in docked mode? (Headphone jack, not Bluetooth.)

Nah, I've been with the Vita and PS4 launch and they weren't remotely similar. WAY more functionality built in. At the launch of both of those, I loved how much you could do on these systems from an OS standpoint. Of course they got better later but even at launch they were far, far beyond the Switch. Launch library you could argue but even that I would disagree with personally.

Right. It's not an important issue to you because YOU have always have a phone or laptop near you. That doesn't mean everyone does. It's convenient to have multiple functions in one device.

The last Nintendo handheld.

So six years. That's crazy. The internet is bigger than ever now, too.

It depends on whether they switched to Switch (heheh) as a priority in the middle of development or took a nearly finished (and optimized) Wii U version and upgraded it as much as they could. The latter could result in a Wii U version that runs better.

I didn't say the Wii U version couldn't run better. I'm explaining why the Switch version is the only thing we have seen for the most part. I don't see any reason to infer that it means they are scared that the Wii U version would run better and make the Switch look bad.

Edit - and obviously I mean since the Switch reveal.

While it's powered on AND docked, actually. That's the only way to charge them out of the box.

That's the case. The idea seems to be that the Switch rests in the dock when not used with the Joy cons attached to it. If that doesn't work for you, a charging grip (or a pro controller) seems like a good idea.

No real confusion there, you can only charge the JoyCon by docking them! Their proposed battery life is about 20 hours, so you shouldn't need the charging grip unless you think you'll go that long without re-connecting them while docked.

No confirmation as to whether or not they charge while you're charging the Switch in portable mode unfortunately. That could be the one weird dealbreaker here.

If it sits in the dock, everything charges; it doesn't have to be powered on. If you put the joycons on the dock when you're done playing, it'll charge them and they'll be ready when you come back. I don't recall the number, but the joycons have pretty long battery-lifes.

I honestly don't think the Xbox One disconnecting controller issue is about interference. It's pretty widespread and seems to happen at random to me personally.

Yes, but remember that they have a 20 hour battery life. I think you'll be fine if you generally remember to dock your Switch, and Joy-cons, before bed.

Yeah, but you get 20 hours per charge. Put them on the main docked unit at night a couple of times a week and you'll never even notice low batteries.

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I'm an idiot! I wasn't even considering the battery life of the joy-cons when the main unit is docked. 20 hours is waaaaay more than enough for me. I'm good to go. :)

If having a browser on a console is such a dealbreaker, then just don't get it? Seems pretty simple to me. As you said, there are clearly other options out there for you.

I wouldn't generally care, but a browser on a nice big portable screen would add a decent amount of value. Really hoping they've got one when I eventually pick it up.

Because now there're real and fake launches. Now, in order to be called a "real" launch, it needs video apps, because... ?
Look, all consoles had problems at launch. PS4 had these. Xbox One had these. Wii U had a fuck ton of these. Now Switch has these too, it's nothing uncommon in the industry. You should know that if you want to be an early adopter. It's not even tied to consoles only, but to every new tech release.

There were no sync issues with the units at the hundreds of events. Whatever this glitch is, it is obviously gonna have an easy, 2 second fix that probably wont even reach most people

$65? Isn't the MSRP $59.99?
They are both msrp $60.

I also don't understand why people are complaining when both the PS4 and Xbox One controllers were $60-65 at launch and did not get discounted for a while. We also have Microsoft selling "custom" Xbox One controllers for $80 and the elusive "elite controllers" for $125-150.

Dealbreaker? Who said anything about a dealbreaker? Am I not allowed to complain about the lack of functions that, while important, are not dealbreakers? And what other option out there for me will allow me to play Mario Odyssey and whatever future Nintendo games release on the platform?

There is more than one actual game. Let's not hyperbole.

Should be interesting to see the Zelda previews tho.

Just noticed the cost of the pro controller is fucking $70, jesus christ
Too expensive compared to the Xbox One controller.

Oh wait the Switch Pro Controller has 40 hours of battery life with a built in rechargeable battery, HD rumble and NFC.

Maybe the Xbox One controller is too expensive?

But, you see, this is a thread of people who are interested in the console discussing the features (or the lack thereof) of said console. Not everyone in this thread has to be super duper hyped about it, nor are we obligated to buy it.

If reading posts that express disappointment over an objectively feature-barren console launch is such a deal-breaker, then just don't read them?

Sick burn by the way. Honestly contemplating deleting the Internet now. How will I recover.

3DS OS slow is true, but crashes?
I'm still rocking a OG 3DS, no problems. Maybe you had a fault unit. It happens.
