"Nintendo" vs. "Playstation" as a synonym for videogames

the question is whether video games in general are refered to as nintendo's isn't it, not the actual system. if thats it, then nintendo would still be the most widly used that i hear, you always hear people complaining and talking about how "kids are always playing these nintendo's these days."
there's also a trend i've noticed, where people are on purpose mis pronouncing the proper names of systems, because they don't want to sound like they know what they're talking bout.

Everything is "discs" to my mom... When she notices that I bought a new DVD, game, console, controller, or pretty-much-anything-she-doesn't-recognize she'll say something like "Don't you have enough discs already?"

:lol
Better than the soccer moms who used to come in when I was working at Best Buy looking for "the new Super Mario tape."

Someone on my local news was talking about deer hunting not being popular anymore and he was saying the reason why is because it had to competed with people playing Sega and Nintendo. (instead of saying video games). :lol

I recall just fine.
SEGA may have been mentioned in movies and songs, but it was never synonymous with video games. The NES made it so that when you said "I'm going to go play Nintendo", it meant "I'm going to go play video games". You could have been playing Berserk on the Atari and you would have said, "I'm going to go play Nintendo".

I remember people using both Sega and Nintendo synonymous with video games in the 90's.

Yeah, I remember SEGA being synonymous with videogames in some circles. I remember my friends mother saying "You going to go play SEGA?" even though he was going to play my SNES. It's true it was never as big as Nintendo or PlayStation as a synonym for videogames, but it was definitely used.

Ah the 80s/early 90s, when mom's would gather around and say stuff like

"oh little Johnny's upstairs playing Nintendo"

or

"put your Nintendo away and finish your homework"

or

"why don't you take your cousins downstairs and show them how to play Nintendo?"

:lol

In 95 I was still hearing people saying "playing Sega."

I'm still stuck with "Playing Atari" in my head, no matter what the videogame was (Odessey, Intellivision, ColecoVision, etc).

Nobody responded to my post with the jingle? Am I just too old?

"Have you played Atari today?"

yeah, it was quite common for both... I find it odd that a nintendo fan would feel threatened by it, especially now.

In Australia I find it's about half and half between Xbox and PS2. Xbox has really gained a lot of ground here. You very rarely hear Nintendo because of how poorly it's doing here. My parents still call my system's "Nintendos" though.

John Connor mentioned "they were all playing Nintendo" in Terminator 2. :)

Back in the early 90's it was definately "Nintendo" that was used for describing games.

I think nintendo has been around for so damn long (in the gaming bus.) that using the word as a synonym for video games is just fine.....playstation/sony/microsoft....don't have that toyish and natural feel that both sega and nintendo have (judging by the sound of the word).

My mom calls every system a Nintendo so maybe I'm just used to it...
