Nintendo Wii U Controller Demo from CES 2012

Jon Rettinger gets a lengthy walk-through demonstation of just how the Wii U controller will work. While the main gameplay will still reside on your TV, you'll also be able to bring the game to your controller so someone else can watch whatever they want on the television, and then send the game back to the big screen when they can. The potential for new gameplay concepts with the way this system works makes one wonder just what all Nintendo may have in store for us.

Lock if old.

Has this been answered yet: If a game requires the two screens to be used simultaneously to be playable, how will you play the game on your WiiU controller alone if someone is watching something else on the TV?

You can't. However, I can easily see such games having an alternate interface that would allow them to be played on a single screen.

Thought it'd be something new since you made a new thread instead of post in the CES WII U thread... Meh.

He's basically using the controller to change the lighting on a tech demo, so I don't really know what people are supposed to even think here.

You won't. Those two features are mutually exclusive.

We already know the Wii U will be able to display 1080p, the question is if devs try to achieve that resolution with their games.

Yeah I always wished a game would require me to look down at my controller to find out if I need to reload or if I'm walking in the right direction.
definitely won't work for some games but it could look beautiful for adventure games/rpgs. Shooters don't really work so much.

I understand, but I didn't know if this particular demo was 1080p or not. If Nintendo at least makes a 1080p Mario, I would be very happy. Have been playing through Galaxy again on my PC upscaled and it looks gorgeous.

As a side note, I hope there is a Layton installment on the Wii U. I can imagine Level 5 can use the WiiU controller setup for some great puzzles. Even some sort of co-op game play.

Seems to work fine for the DS.

Best thing about Zelda:OoT 3DS was having an easily accessible menu at all times on the lower screen.

Does anyone else think that Zelda "demo" seems a bit too fleshed out to just be a demo?

Retro making a new Zelda confirmed?

sums it up for me. aside from the ds, nintendo just seem to keep offering features/options i have absolutely no interest in...

I would rather see something come of the bird demo. A game like that would be really interesting, but I know that won't be happening.

Sounds more like bad game design as opposed to a shortcoming of the controller imo.

Right. The option is there, but nothing says that every game is going to need it.

Pretty much.

Not sure why people want to shoehorn old conventions into unconventional methods of input and control, then say the controller is a bad idea. No, its a bad idea to push designs that won't work or get tedious...like putting a standard life bar on the controller screen. Sure, devs will do it, but devs do that even with the most standard of controllers. We don't say the controller is bad then, and we shouldn't say this one is bad now, especially when it has very obvious benefits along side doing the exact same thing a standard controller can do.

IGN, is that you?

(For reference, IGN said the same thing about the GameCube Zelda tech demo, saying "that's way too much stuff to be just a demo, get ready for Zelda guyz!" and then the next time Nintendo showed Zelda, we got the first Wind Waker trailer.)

Nintendo's gonna troll us with Zelda: Epic Yarn.

I don't see many disadvantages of the Wii U controller. And I don't understand why people are acting like it's extra features hurt anything.

The positives include:

+6" touch screen
+Standard controller layout
+Motion Controls
+Speakers
+Ability to play a game and watch TV at the same time
+It's very comfortable to hold

The negatives (which will hopefully be fixed by E3):

-Could use analogue triggers, Nintendo did it first with the GC. I don't know why they stopped using them.
-Possibly clickable analogues?

On the topic of the Zelda demo, it's very impressive. I'm at a loss on how exactly that Tokyo demo was filmed though.

Does the Wii U controller have a headphone jack? It seems like it'd be a nice feature if, as per their example, someone else wants to watch a show on TV and you want to game, you can still listen to the game without having the speakers intruding on whoever is watching TV.

EDIT: My Google-fu suggests that there is in fact a headphone jack. Nice.

Yes.

Edit: Damn your stealth edit.

Given your experience with the controller, ¿how does it feel while using left circlepad + the right buttons?, that's my concern regarding if it feels like using the dpad+buttons on 3DS or not.

Wait, I thought he was a joke character?

Analog triggers should be a must, especially for driving games. Hard to go back to digital gas and brakes in racing games.
