Then I see the first content page. Each boxart has a few dogs to go along with it.

Holy shit, what a perfect idea. I mean, it's all about picking out your own special dog, right? You've seen women obsess over what stuffed animal to buy. The marketing and design on this is really spot-on. Who the hell knows if it'll work, but you have to admire the attempt.

Not good for the gamer.
The main game should come with all the dog types and the user should be able to pick the ones he wants to use.
 
I could care less if they make 50 versions of this, I'm just happy to see what I wanted, a Welsh Corgi, definitely the version of the game I'll pick up. I wish there was some sort Lab though.

All in all the multiple versions don't surprise me, this is Nintendo.

IT'S A DOG SIMULATOR. Somehow I highly doubt the average gamer is even going to bother.

This could also be great for point-of-purchase marketing. People will see the three different boxes and pick them all up to see what dogs are included. Then, whether or not they ever intended to buy the game in the first place, they'll start subconsciously deciding which one they would buy if they had to choose. Then it's only a hop, skip, and a jump before they're actually putting down the cash.

Again: the game could bomb like hell. But they're making a serious go of it.

...or a hop, skip, and a terrific vault over the chasm between sanity and desire for a puppy simulator. no, i think this game's audience is very specialized, and nintendo is hoping crazy people will buy all three.

(p.s.: i would buy the one with the german shepherd, but i would sorely miss the lab)
 
I can't believe no one has mentioned that he "5 dogs per cart" works like pokemon works. You start with 5 and can end up with all 15 by communicating with other DS owners who own one of the other versions. Its not like you have to buy them all, and with the DS's wireless abilities it should be easy as hell to get them all.

I wonder if the wireless capabilities allow your dogs to play with someone else's, etc., or if they can offer new dogs for downloads at special events or promotions?
 
i'll pass until they come up with a version with cats. As silly as it sounds, it's the closest i'll come to owning a cat at the moment.

Edit: The first wallpaper is lethally cute. i really hope the game has some depth to it, though i think the real fun will come in linking up. They really need to come up with some good marketing targetting women over here with this.

Yes because as we all know there are so many DS owners that you're just likely to bump into two down the street! Who happen to each have different versions! Shit, I barely see people with GBAs, let alone DS.

Basically what it comes down to is you better have two friends who have a DS and decide to go with two different versions besides your own.

In Nintendo Dream they said that dogs can interact with other people's dogs even when the DS is in sleep mode. Downloadable dogs is a fantastic idea, but I think they'd have to put them in the game with the intention of unlocking them later. We'll have to wait and see on that one.
 
While I really love cats much more than dogs in real life, I don't think they'd make as good a game.

EDIT: As much as I'm not fond of different versions of games having different features, I can't deny that, if you can find enough people with the game, trading really adds to the experience (based on pokemon anyway).

Three versions is a bit much though.

I think there's a good bet that Nintendogs will be in DS kiosks. Assuming its not a version you have, there's 5 of the 10 you need right there. E3 or any other big event would give you the other 5.

Edit: or all 10 if its not in a kiosk.

Ok, whether or not they'd be in kiosks - which is possible, but I live in the US after all - is one thing. And shit, Nintendo BETTER put like one version at Target, one version at Wal-Mart and one version at Gamestop/EB Games so that I won't have to rely on the stupid expectations that there will actually be other owners to bump into. I don't know if Nintendo realizes this, but the world is actually big. Oh sure, we're small in the grand scheme of things... but a range of 60-90feet via wifi isn't exactly conducive to finding people to fill your game up with all the Dogs!

Similarly, enjoying a game/getting the most out of a game should not be contingent on scouting the planet for other gamers or going to a consumer electronic show. That's a thing best left for the INTERNET.

Uh, you DO realize 1 in 100 is not exactly great odds. Especially when you must consider that I have to THEN lessen the odds considerably trying to find people who own the versions of the game I need! And even LESS when you consider the # of DS owners in the country! And even LESS if you're not living IN a big city!
 
this is some of the most eyecatching boxart I've seen recently, it's definitely going to capture the attention of casuals and people that don't normally play games, and they'll probably try to find out what the "game" is about...

That is just screaming "buy me" to an audience that normally doesn't play videogames... They'll probably see it as a great way to pass the time...

especially the Chihuahua boxart in the middle...

I can easily see some of my cousins, friends, and heck my little sister asking me about the game for sure if they saw the cover. My loves pets and animals (she also enjoyed Feel the Magic and plays Mario-type games occasionally and she's barely in Middle School)...

1 in 100 for DSs and 1 in 10 for GBAs. On average.
If you're not seeing people with GBAs or DSs, I guess you must be living out in the boonies. You won't see people with PSPs either :P
 
Not that I want to interupt the pointless bitching, but do we know if they grow from puppies into dogs yet? Everyone says they wished cats and dogs would stay as puppies and kittens, so I guess there are advantages either way, but I'd personally prefer it if they grew.
 
Maybe you have to cut them open, stuff them, then stitch them up. It could be like a trophy mode.

Only on the DS. Touch!

If I'm not seeing a GBA or DS, it's called the odds being against me. And it's even worse, as noted, if you're hoping someone has the exact games you need.

And not surprisingly, your assumption about where I live is wrong. Odds are not in my favour. Simple as that. It's far more likely you won't see many then it is that you will. Statistics prove that.

Now when it's 180,000,000 out of 280,000,000, then it'll be something.

And, uh, I didn't say I would see people with PSPs. That's why I said this sort of concept is best left for the internet.
 
Cross-ownership of Pokemon wasn't a big deal, I don't see a big deal this time...

If people really want different dogs and don't know anyone that has another version they'll probably just buy a copy themselves, not a big deal...

heck I know gamers that buy all the versions of Pokemon, and casual gamers are even less carefuly about allocating funds in ways that wouldn't be deemed wasteful...

OK... I'm just sensing a lot of unnecessary negativity from you regarding Nintendo products, that's all ;) I shouldn't bother replying to it, but I understand if the odds are not working out for you. Don't buy a lottery ticket, whatever you do :D

It was a big deal. For me, I complained about it. It's a stupid idea and I hope every company that does it burns in some way.

This is the big deal part. Paying for three different versions of the game is a BIG deal.

If you don't consider buying two copies of a game where essentially the only major difference is a few extra/different monsters, then we have a different idea of wasteful.

I'm very negative about what I don't like. I'm argumentative so it might seem I'm skewed this way or that at the time, but for me it's just about being passionate. When I don't like something I get really upset and involved. It's just my personality.
 
As I said above, trading actually adds to the experience if you can do it, the problem is for people who can't.

Pokemon's a bit more reasonable though. You get the vast majority of Pokemon in each version with a proportionally small number exclsuive in each, plus only two games per version (unless you REALLY need to get absolutely all of them and then you have to find someone with the later third version too).

In this case, you only get a third of the dogs out there and there are two other versions than your own to hunt down. Of course, with there only being 15 dogs compared to 150 Pokemon (initially), trading would get pretty boring pretty early if there was only one exclusive dog per game.

If you're that desperate to get them all though, I'm sure you can. Even if you have to rent the other copies.

If I get the game, which'll depend on reviews, I'd probably get the top one. Unless the dogs are different enough that another version is more fun anyway.

For the record, I'm not getting this game but the boxart sure is/are inviting.

step two... hope that the odds of 1 in 300+ (in the US) are in my favour during my visit
step three... stare intently and awkwardly in the schoolyard toward their pockets
step four... get arrested by police officers for stalking and attempted kidnapping of minors
