A total of 135,000 Nintendogs were sold from 21-24 April.
That's the fastest selling DS title to date in Japan, beating Super Mario 64 DS, which sold 120,000 in its first week.

The DS hardware for the week (18-24) sold 72,000 units. Previous week total was 22,000.

72000 DS's!
135000 Dogs

PSP am crying.......Pokemon am smiling awaiting their release on this beast.

Surely this proves once and for all ots not about the graphics, its about the games!!!

The DS is a beast. I've severely underestimated Nintendo here and there ability to sell what their market wants. That and I've overestimated the PSP's ability to sell to that market and to create it's own more mature market as well. This will be a much, much closer race than I thought and it'll be interesting to see if either of them will actually be able to breakout and really become long lasting products. Nobody really expected the DS to and the PSP is showing more weakness early than I had expected.

:lol :lol If NOA marketing gets a clue then they could turn this into WORLDWIDE PHENOMENA.

You may be able to run Drinky, but can you hide from the Nintendogs?

I agree... I think we all underestimated Nintendo here.

But why? Its Nintendo's major market, of course they're going to fight tooth and nail to keep it. They're hardly going to roll over because the PSP is a technically superior product. That said, its still early days. The PSOne didn't carve a sizeable niche until more than a year in the marketplace and after a few big name exclusives had hit home (notably a Final Fantasy). I expect this battle will mirror that one quite closely.

True. But if the DS had DC level graphics the PSP would probably be dead in the water. If the PSP had a hard drive, I think it would be doing much better.

It's gonna be interesting to see how the sales hold during Golden Week. Nintendogs could very well top 400K+ come mid-may.

When Pokemon Diamond and Pearl come out, DS sales are going to explode, leaving PSP in the dust. This is not opinion, it is fact.

I'm not saying it means anything in the grand scheme of things, but to deny this is to deny reality.

How so? The big name games have already been accounted for between the two, yet the sales trends are maturing and are in Nintendo's favor.

Pokemon comes out in November. I think I heard this year for Animal Crossing too but im not sure

so Sony should start distributing PSPs for free from now, and by that they might have a chance to par with DS sales for 2005

Sony isn't exactly MS you know?

I mean in Japan you can pick up an xbox for free while you pay for the games :lol , can't exactly say the same thing about Sony, that would kill them even before the arrival of the PS3

whats golden week?
At the end of April / beginning of May, a bunch of public holidays fall close together. It's 29 Apr and 3,4,5 May. They call this time Golden Week because it's almost a week of holidays. It's usually the 2nd or 3rd biggest selling period in the year. Depends on the releases, but normally Golden Week and mid-August (Obon festival) have big sales spurts.

Not really. It didn't help Pikmin 2 last year.
It might be good to get word of mouth going a couple of weeks before GW. And the Famitsu review couldn't have landed at a better time. The magazine officially hits newsstands tomorrow (28th) so it might push a few people over the edge.

This is good news for Nintendo. While I'm starting to hate all the comparisons of Nintendogs to Pokemon, I have no problem agreeing that this means Pokemon Diamond/Pearl will almost certainly just fuck PSP in the ass out the gate.

I still think if it's PSP vs. DS that the PSP will get a ton of adopters in about 18 months, but I really think we'll all be sploojing about GBE by then.

I'm absolutely shocked that Nintendo's NulShock campaign of throwing some random shit out there to prevent Sony from sweeping in unfettered is actually working.

But all that aside, I just really want to be playing Nintendogs right now and there isn't anything I want to buy for my PSP at the moment. Guess that's the more important contest as far as I'm concerned.

p.s. Is anyone else starting to feel like the DS is going to end up far more successful in Japan than it will in America? Possibly meaning that the PSP becomes much more prolific stateside? That'd make for an interesting dynamic when the next Game Boy comes out.

It's reminding me of the Saturn. UH OH.

PSP doesn't have a killer app, there's no software driving the hardware sales in a major way. The influence of killer apps is very underrated IMHO. They can alone make a system a huge success or a failure. PSP desperately needs a killer app, and ports of various ps2 games are not going to cut it.

Until nothing comes out for DS in the next 4 months again.

They might want to consider dropping the price of PSP. There's so much talk about GTA, but its impact will mostly be in America, I dont recall the Japanese going too ga ga over the title in Japan.

Ports of PS2 games arent going to get it for the PSP considering it's a higher value but much higher priced system, so consumers will expect more. The PS2 didnt get where it got to today from offering nothing but PS1 ports with upgraded graphics for example. It also introduced some of the best games this generation.

Nintendo is putting out new, different types of products for DS to compensate for a slightly higher price than previous handhelds and weaker tech, not merely ports. That strategy might work for them in the end, innovation and a freshness in game design will help sell a system. I wont say graphics dont matter(bc they do for everyone to a certain point), but something is driving people to buy a DS over PSP.

Well, we have more comparions and longevity to compare with Japan than we do in America. You cant compare PSP launch numbers to a system that's been out for months. Next NPD is going to tell how much PSP is still continuing to be successful or not. Also, in America, GBA is still selling a huge load of systems despite DS & PSP, Nintendo's handheld presence is stronger here than it is anywhere else.

I think eventually the PSP will overtake the DS with a pricedrop and more games, but Nintendo is doing what they do best ATM. If anything, this gives them good breathing room to get the next Gameboy ready for launch. They've bought themselves some time.

What, apart from Gundam next month? Or Advance Wars, Goemon and Gyukaten Saiban in June? Or Jump Super Stars in August? Or Slime Mori Mori which is also in the summer?

On the contrary it's Sony that need to actually start to release major games. They did really well at launch, but when the only significant release on the psp this year so far has been a port of a psone game there is a problem.

Your point is probably valid in general, but it's not clear why you brought it up. The implication is that you think DS has a "killer app" right now -- so what is it?

Yeah... the DS has some legs right now with no real "killer app". I have a feeling it will blow up once Pokemon, Animal Crossing, online stuff, etc come out.

That's great news for DS and Nintendogs. I personally felt before that PSP would easily slaughter the DS. Looks like Nintendo's DS will actually survive Sony's onslaught, and even one-up the PSP on occasion.
