Nintendo's President Apologizes For Not Being Able To Meet Switch 2 Demand

"Currently, in many countries, the demand for Switch2 exceeds the supply, and we are unable to meet it. We understand that some shareholders have also been unable to obtain it. We started accepting lottery sales at My Nintendo Store in April. The response far exceeded our expectations, and I announced in my name on X that there were 2.2 million applicants, along with an apology.

"Since then, we have conducted four lottery sales, but some people were not selected. We have announced that the fifth lottery will take place starting in July. Many general retailers have also conducted lottery sales. The number of stores offering in-store sales is gradually increasing.

"As a company, we are working to improve our production system to deliver as many units as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this initial demand, which greatly exceeded our expectations."

Furukawa previously stated they put the 15M Switch 2 forecast this fiscal year because they thought the high price of the Switch 2 would surpress demand, but that hasn't happened. He also stated that their forecast was based on demand, and not production capabilities. That means Nintendo is likely to revise their 15M forecast upwards later this year.

He should rather apologize for the miserable lcd screen.

And that's after he said they delayed the launch because they wanted to get enough stock.

So basically, Furukawa is humblebragging.

What an asshole.

Apologizing for something like supply issues, when there's so many other things they should be apologizing for.

I think Nintendo it doing great. Everything negative about them is being completely overblown. They just put out a banger new MK game. You can get it for 50 bucks in the bundle. We have a DK game and it looks like they gave it AAA treatment. It is right around the corner. The Switch 2 console is much more powerful than anyone anticipated, mainly due to DLSS. It is punching way above its weight on most games and really delivered on the power front. I think many people don't like to accept that fact. The price of the console is exactly what we predicted in our polls. We usually under predict price because we predict a price we "hope" for but in this case we were dead on the money. Everyone predicted this price, and on top of that everyone predicted this price and assumed the hardware would be weaker.

They are weathering this internet hate storm. It seems like every big gaming company has drawn the ire of the Internet. I think actually that we are very entitled. Sure, we can say what we want, but we have become too ubiquitous. We pile on too much. That isn't a sign of a smart group. Smart groups have a diversity of opinion. Sure we can get cynical and life is hard but we also grow to resent the things others love too much. Switch 2 isn't' the only device that has caught our ire lately. PS5 Pro was nearly a Switch 2 level hate debacle for what it turned out was a very reasonable price in the end considering the market and what went into the system. Another thing that will be refuted by the intentionally obtuse. Every day we move further from God.

The hate storm really isn't new and isn't really related to the Switch 2. If you have been following the BOTW hate or even before that the general Nintendo hate or just the general hatred of everything from everyone that is gaming related lately, you know this has always been simmering under the surface. Their performance last gen put them in a big spotlight and many people are trying to take them down.

They have tried it before, they failed. They will try it again. I'll keep buying the excellent games I love on the platform of my choice.

The two talking points against Nintendo are 1. Price of games is too high and 2. The LCD screen sucks. For me, I admit, number 2 isn't an issue. I never play my Switch undocked. However, I can't help but remember the Switch 1 thread where most of the people I see hating the Switch 2 over this said they only played in Docked mode and that undocked mode was actually a huge waste. Only really the Nintendo lovers played the handheld and they aren't the ones hating now...on the price of games, everyone in the industry has said for years, nay, decades the prices needed to go up. They did need to go up. They do need to go up. Accept it. If you accept it, then understand this. Nintendo being the company to take the hit from the internet for this is not greedy. It's brave. It's brave and I'm tired of pretending it was not. Everyone followed suit or they soon will because this needed to happen. Imagine how scary your hate campaign is that we have to describe the company that withstands it as "brave" but the campaign is actually that bad. You will not win with your hate. Hate can't conquer love on a large scale. As long as love for Nintendo exists your attacks will fail.

Seriously. This is just boasting disguised as an apology. I'm sure the stockholders love it.
Pretty much this

"I'm sorry that we couldn't rob all of you. We'll get you next time."

Haters right now.

Exactly
Now apologize for a overpriced Switch 1.5

Holy shit, the salt in this thread exceeded my wildest expectations. Some of you are not taking this well.
It's funny stuff 😄

Nintendo just shot themselves in the foot.
I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.
What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase a switch 2, , nor will they purchase any of Nintendo's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Nintendo has alienated an entire market with this move.
Nintendo publicly apologise for the Switch 2 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

We do know that a bunch of bulls*it, since we do know S2 is avaiable in a lot of places.... (and i have one, so no nintendo fanboyism here, please).

If you actually read the article instead of just jumping to conclusions based on the title, you would know that he was speaking specifically about Japan, where Nintendo has very much not been able to meet demand for the Switch 2.

He's not speculating about whether it can be found at a local Walmart in Peoria.

Thanks, that is even more bullshit them.

I am sorry we couldn't anticipate something that happens every time we launch a console.
Breaking the worldwide record for unit sales at launch certainly doesn't happen 'every time' a new console launches. Especially not outside of a holiday period.

It's crazy to think Switch 2 still has its first holiday coming up.

On behalf of consumers everywhere, I'd like to preemptively apologize to Microsoft for not being able to meet the next Xbox's supply.

Edit - Nevermind, I feel like people are just going to argue with me, regardless.

If you are still looking for one, there are some stores northeast of Detroit that still have them in stock, in store. Just a heads up if anyone is close to that area and you are still looking for one.

Genuine question…where is the demand this high country wise? And if it's somewhere in the states, what part of the country? My local Target and Walmart have both had units on the floor steadily since launch. I'm not questioning the validity of some shortages, but the articles getting shared and threads around here are making it sound like there is a world wide shortage, that is greatly exaggerated.
You should let Nintendo know that your local target and Walmart have hardware so they can ship them elsewhere.

He should apologize for the lack of updates on old switch games if they weren't going to have any new switch 2 ones.

... I shouldn't engage, but why? He was answering a question from a Japanese shareholder about the system's availability in Japan. This wasn't an impromptu press release. In what conceivable way is that "bullshit"?
Because that means Nintendo could rebalance (and in fact should) this availability, IMHO. tI was not as different as Apple with AirPods Pro some years ago... saying that the demand was overwhelming, I went in a Apple Store and saw dozens of it :-D (Im brazilian BTW, so everything is being told in a brazilian PoW).

Ohhh, I see what you're saying. They'll probably attempt to do that long-term, but they're dealing with complex international supply chains, so I don't think they can easily divert shipments from one region to another, and they also likely have pre-existing deals in place with retailers and regional distributors.

On top of that, there's the question of where excess stock is located. If it's just a matter of, say, Australia having too much stock and Japan having too little, then, yes, they can adjust their allocations to account for that in the long run, but if you just happen to have Switch 2s sitting on shelves in a few random counties in the US, but it's selling out in other parts of the country, then that's likely an issue with how individual retailers are allocating their stock (ie, Walmart sent too many units to Portland and not enough to Galveston or whatever) and that's out of Nintendo's hands.

I finally got my Nintendo invite on Tuesday and my Switch 2 (+ Gamecube controller) arrived yesterday. All that mattered to me was getting one before DK Bananza launched. S'all good, sir!
