Ok the war is just beginning but with the aggressiveness that Sony has come into the fight, Nintendo looks to have an uphill battle coming.

First let me get this out of the way:

We all know the features that the PSP boasts, we know about its possible shortcomings and most of its strengths, the same goes for the DS. It is clear that these two units are leagues apart, and the DS while well designed seems more like an experiment than an actual product (3rd Pillar).

Anyway, my point to all this is if the PSP starts to take a large chunk of the handheld market and Nintendo is forced to launch the successor to the GBA what will it have to be/do to gain Nintendo's ground back??? Will similar graphics with a more stable media and larger battery life be enough??? Will Nintendo have to release something as staggering an advancement as the PSP is, to get their ground back??? I think they will. With the PSP's price point and its technology it seems that it would be hard for anyone not to "buy" into it.

I know we can't tell the future, but its fun to speculate. I don't want to see Nintendo continue to slide into obscurity but if the PSP takes off like it most likely will they are gonna have to produce something MAJOR in response to stop continuing the slide.

Strange. I was thinking, "Hey, it's 2:15. Why isn't there a new Nintendo thread yet?"

And then you answered my prayers like an angel from Heaven.

:lol at AniHawk

Anyways, I think the handheld market is gonna change/expand, but I still think it'll be hugely profitable for Nintendo.

I think we're seeing that DS and GBA SP can co-exist, it's no different from a car maker offering different lines of cars or even "sub-brands", like Honda has Acura for a slightly higher end consumer. DS right now is for the higher end shopper, eventually GB Next will take that spot and DS will become the budget handheld.

I think you guys really are crazy to think Nintendo is that naive too. I think they knew that they wouldn't have 100% handheld marketshare forever.

"I think I just peed a little bit."

And for good measure:

while xbox 2 and ps3 hasn't launch yet, but xbox 2 will definitly take a large chunk of market from PS3, what sony has to do with ps4 to gain back their market leading postion ? :lol

why??? There is no bashing in it, I thought it would be an interesting conversation piece. I would like to know what NIntendo will have to do to make a more compelling product, within the guidlines that they usually follow.

Well since you like that screen, why not give the GB Next a 640x480 resolution LCD, maybe with a touchscreen. Ability to play GCN discs.

Price it as a premium product and then reduce the DS to the "budget" role. I think Nintendo's showing right now that they can still do that. GBA SP is still selling like hotcakes even with the DS out.

Why?

Because it still fills a role that neither the DS or the PSP do. You can't beat it for portability/size, battery life, or price.

Just like Apple sells multiple iterations of the i-Pod (i-Pod, i-Pod photo, i-Pod mini, etc.).

Uphill battle??? Did you forget about the GBA? The only company with an uphill battle ahead of them in the handheld market is Sony and even then it's only about getting enough systems out there.

Seriously, both systems will co-exist in the marketplace.

While we may not be seers, I think the quality of Sony's brand affords us a bit of prescience. So, this isn't speculation: Sony will force Nintendo's hand, pushing the House of Mario to further alienate their core by abandoning the DS prematurely in the face of the PSP's phenomenal success. The gripes many have aired over the PSP are deliberately overblown trifles that will detract little from the joy an unprecedented number will take from Sony's novel marvel.

I don't want to see Nintendo continue to slide into obscurity

When you peddle stuff like the DS, you deserve to.

I don't think they'll abandon DS. Software development is still gonna be cheaper on it and not all devs are going to want to spend next-generation $$$ on portable game development.

DS is a way for developers to make portable games in some interesting new ways without having to spend an arm and a leg to do so. DS eventually I believe will be $99 or less with $20-$25 games.

GB Next is probably going to be a portable GCN, which is enough of a step beyond the DS in terms of performance/pricing that no one should complain. If you want a S2000, then pay for an S2000, but don't complain when you buy an Accord that Honda's made a better model later on.

the DS is the first nintendo console since snes that have all major companies on it because the Square-Enix DS support is already looking better than their GBA support.

Konami brings castlevania and mystical ninja

Capcom & Namco bring popular games to it.

So far, so good.

Jr., wasn't your Nintendo thread from yesterday enough. Do you plan to make a new thread until Nintendo gets better marketing, and sends Reggie to your house with a fruit basket?

Once the PSP takes off -- it will -- Sony will render Nintendo as irrelevant in the handheld market as they have been in the console market. Some of you are denying the magnitude of Sony's entry into this market. In a year, the DS will be a forgotten failure of a system. This isn't a bash of the system more than it's an acknowledge of the dynamics at play, with Sony poised to overtake this market as they did with PS1.
