The Nintendo Switch Failed To Fulfill It’s Handheld Promise

I somewhat see your point. The games aren't designed for short burst gameplay anymore but it's often bigger longer experiences on the go that were initially designed to be played at home. No disagreeing there, but I don't think short burst gameplay was ever promised as the reason to own a switch. Often the short burst stuff you're asking for can be found on mobile.
It certainly was implied. I think in many ways, the pick up and play nature of old handheld games is lost. With the switch receiving many console ports from other systems, it makes the software stack rather skewed.

For example, take a look at the Witcher 3. A great game ported to the switch. As a handheld style of game, it’s pretty terrible. It’s certainly not a pick up and play experience at all. Now in the past, if the a game like the Witcher were to come to handheld, it would be a spinoff of some sort with redesigned gameplay mechanics to suit handhelds.

I guess, I sort of lament the fact that this side of Nintendo seems to be somewhat fading away?

Unfortunately games made specifically for a handheld are long gone, for better or worse. Nintendo did that to cut back on development cost and to increase support overall.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Oh please, there are like 5000 games on it, you can find loads suitable for short bursts on the go, lol. It still got a portable friendly Monster Hunter, for every massive BOTW or Odyssey there's something easier to get into like Echoes of Wisdom or Wonder and boatloads of awesome indies on top🤷‍♂️

Yea, it’s truly unfortunate because mobile games definitely don’t fill the niche. In many ways, despite the numerous handheld devices, they all suffer from the same issue of lack of dedicated handheld software. I often find with devices like the steam deck that my most played games on the go are old emulated hand held games.
