An Ohio grand jury found officers' actions were justified in last month's fatal shooting of a man holding an air rifle at a Wal-Mart store, a special prosecutor said Wednesday.

Special Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier said the Greene County grand jury in Xenia opted not to issue any indictments in the Aug. 5 death of 22-year-old John Crawford III.

A 911 caller reported Crawford was waving what appeared to be a rifle in the store. Police said he didn't obey commands to put down what turned out to be an air rifle. Crawford's family said he had taken it off a store shelf.

Crawford's family says they believe the shooting was not justified and wants federal authorities to investigate whether race was a factor. Crawford was black, the officers are white.

An attorney for the family didn't immediately return a call seeking comment on the grand jury's decision.

The city of Beavercreek said a statement that it is asking the FBI to conduct a review to determine if there were any civil rights violations.

"However, based on the information the responding officers had and Mr. Crawford's failure to comply with the responding officers' orders, the officers did what they were trained to do to protect the public," the statement said.

Crawford's family also has repeatedly asked state investigators to release the surveillance video publicly, and Facebook groups and online petitions have also pushed for the release. A spokeswoman for Piepmeier said at least part of the footage will be released publicly.

Wal-Mart customer Angela Williams, 37, also died after suffering a medical problem during the store's evacuation.

Cops were justified. Don't understand why they thought someone should be charged.

Real talk. If you're holding a toy designed to look like a weapon and a cop gives you orders, you should do exactly what the cops tell you to do.

Crazy. Tbh I thought most of the rifles for show were stuck on the shelves or had obvious markings that they were just airsoft guns at WalMart. I heard the guy was going around pointing it at people, but I mean if you have a replica of an airsoft rifle in your store and it's so similar that it's hard to distinguish. idk how it's not kept locked down or at least marked or something.

Bad shit all around. Reading back now, from the other thread the caller said some outlandish shit too. Shit's real bad

The cops shot him in the side...they didn't give him a chance to comply.

Also, the 911 caller is a straight up liar.

Just because the 911 caller gave them false info...He should be indicted...doesn't mean the cops should go free. They just murdered that dude and didn't properly assess the situation.

He basically got swatted.

A majority of the blame was on the couple that SWATted him but the cops were overzealous and didn't allow any time for the man to comply or even assess the situation. If he was going to do something he would have done it by then. Also this is an open carry state.

I'm surprised there isn't talk of a suit against the couple that called 911 yet. Are they waiting for some reason or are they not able to get a case for that? Because that sets a very horrible precedent that can and already is being abused to hell and back.

The video of him being shot there is not accurate, at least according to what the special prosecutor stated at the press conference. The shots were fired while police were out of frame. The entire video there is the aftermath.

What orders did the officers give before killing him?

You know, I've been suicidal all my life, I've seen so many doctors, none seem to help me.

As someone who attempt's suicide often is it so comforting to know that even if my ass chickens out, all I need to do is stand in front of a police station. No wonder my physic can't seem to help me, my life means shit!

I can't take it anymore....

I'm struggling to even understand what the video is showing. It's 21 seconds long - is that the first interaction between the various blobs?

How can you possibly come to this conclusion from the specifics of this case? It's baseless exaggeration.

So basically, the guy takes an air gun off the shelf at a store and is carrying it (to buy it?) and gets shot because of a couple of jackasses and overzealous cops. Well then.

Even with them (questionably) deciding that the cops were in the right, there's no reason the guy who called 911 shouldn't be tried for felony murder or something.

If you are being serious and you aren't getting the help you need there is nothing wrong in finding someone else. Just because someone has the title Dr. does not always mean they are good at what they do or you should take everything they say or do on faith, trust me on that one.

There is literally a category for what you are describing though called Suicide by police or something like that. People have and do this for real and as much as I hate how people gang up on those who commit suicide and call it selfish I really have a hard time feeling bad for people who do that. They are being selfish because they are forcing others to do it for them causing them possibily years of mental anguish and trauma and also endangering others.

I'm sure the cops will appreciate your defense of their actions. Especially since you seem to know nothing of what happened.

you can't put a price on sparks
sounds like whoever called amped up the situation to create the situation where the police were ready to come in full force. i can see how they can use that to get the police off the hook.

someone has to burn for this, though. whoever called it in basically killed him.

I know the news story said a grand jury (which was presented with the evidence) decided to not issue charges. Why else would they do that unless evidence suggested that cops arrived, issued orders that the suspect ignored, and took down the perceived threat.

Outrage all you want. Walmart shouldn't be selling replicas of weapons.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

So you are just assuming orders were given because......reasons. Come on.

What orders were given by police?!
Your issue is with Walmart selling replica weapons and not the innocent black man gunned by police?!

The guy who called 911 and got the cops to show up later changed his story from "he was pointing the weapon at customers" to "he wasn't pointing it at them, he was still waiving it around".

Really, you think they were justified in killing an innocent man when the 'perceived threat' was under a false premise?

I find it difficult to believe that he would ignore orders and provoked police to shoot him.

Really you are a fool a damn fool ohio is open carry even if he was carrying a real rifle they have no legal right at all to tell him to put it down. They killed an innocent man for no reason at all except he allegedly did not comply to their orders despite not having to. Your apart of the reason why cops are able to kill innocent people and get away with it.

My issue is with the 911 caller who convinced a police force that an innocent black man had a real firearm. My issue is with Walmart for letting a situation arise by putting realistic looking toy weapons on the shelf.

If the cops didn't issue any orders, don't any of you think the grand jury would say that? The article specifically mentions that orders were given.

He is not a suspect the man in this incident john crawford was innocent. He did not even take the bb gun out its package it was already out of it when he found it. Of course the grand jury in a predominately white town is not gonna sympathize with an innocent black man who did absolutely nothing wrong that day except apparently be black in that particular walmart.

Amazing that the mom and 2 kids were not worried by the suspect, but the cops roll in and shoot him. The only video I could find didn't show the cops come in, it cut away before that. But no one in the store on the video was alarmed by the guy. I never saw him point it at anyone (he did raise it towards some shelves as was walking down the aisle).

Sad, but expected. I dont expect this to get much national attention, although it should.

Ahhh. So no blame should be placed on the caller. Gotcha.

PSA: Ohio is an open carry state. Had that been a real rifle, the victim would have still been well within his 2nd Amendment rights to carry it around the store. With no license.

Well then.

That's bullshit. The one who pulls the trigger of his or her own accord, ESPECIALLY when they are given a professional responsibility to properly assess and deal with the situation, is the one who should be held ultimately accountable

Where the fuck are the people who are always talking about responsible gun owners? TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS WHEN YOU USE A FIREARM.

Where did I say no blame should be placed on the caller? Their is a lot of blame to go around and none of it should be put on john crawford who is now dead and that is what you tried to do in your original post. You can try and deny it but, you did.
