No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

So... there's this new thing that you can build, similar to the random market spot we've seen (or rather similar to the Portal 2 robot I can't remember the name of). Supposedly, you can craft it and leave a message for other players to discover, sort of like a message in a bottle (or at least that's what's implied).

Has this been tested anywhere? Obviously it could take time to check but...If it actually works like that then it is the first (albeit tiny) example of being able to alter something in the game's physical space that is universally visible to other people. Even though it doesn't seem like it at first, it's sort of a big deal when you think about it.

Yeah, the communications thing. I'm presuming, then, that all structures are visible to other players. But I guess someone is going to have to test that.

Also, if you change your home base, does it destroy your previous one, or does it just stay there?

The invisible wall is what I mean. I always wanted to fly much closer to the ground, and I wanted proper mountains and valleys to zip around, but it always felt so stiff with that dumb invisible wall. I always felt locked to that axis because I never wanted to go higher, and the atmospheres of the planets is so tiny and thin.

There was a PC mod that essentially removed the wall that was much better, but it was a bit wonky.

That's what I originally presumed, as they said it was to give the feel of an inhabited universe rather than traditional MP.. Given that you can leave messages now, perhaps they're working towards that. I'm not a big MP guy, but I really like the Souls approach.
 
Swiching ships with a wrecked one is still a huge damn pain in the ass!!

Not to mention switching multitools. And now the multi tool I beat the game with already cannot even mine some basic elements like titanium because they changed the rules of what addons you need. Arrgh this game!
 
So I've avoided this game until now......this latest patch seems to have really done a lot of positive things to the gameplay. If I've never played before, is now a good time to jump in seeing as this is just a foundation update with even more stuff to come?

Yeah. It's basically the same. However (and what screwed me over) you can have one building table only. So if you built it on a Freighter you can't have it in your base and vice-versa.

Not at full price. Really great update that gives the game some much needed purpose but this also needs to be your type of game. If a chill, (slightly retro) sci-fi space/exploration/survival hybrid sounds like it's up your alley then go for it (at a discount). Even when my opinion of the game was at its lowest it was still the ultimate game to listen albums/audiobooks/podcasts with.

This would be a fine comparison if the game had nearly as much content and freedom as Minecraft, but it's not even close. The base building stuff is a neat first step. (Also, Minecraft actually does have a questline if that's what you're interested in doing.)
 
I like that it's called a foundation and it would be great if they fleshed it out into something bigger and better with time. Might be something I still pick up down the line if it gets there. I can wait.

I think in an interview at/around launch Murray said the game would evolve into a more fully realized experience via free content updates. Based on the name and content introduced with Foundation, it seems like they're laying the groundwork for mechanic based updates.

It makes me wonder if base building was always planned. For such a small team they sure threw it together quickly. I guess that says something about the flexibility of the engine, and that bodes well for future updates too.
 
Ideally I'd quite like to have a roadmap for future updates, but I guess HG would be reluctant to do that what with everything that happened at the release of the base game. But I do feel like these big updates do need to be at least every few months to keep remaining players interested.

I'm really liking the base building update - albeit the first base I came across on normal mode was on a planet with hostile sentients, which was pretty annoying! But its definitely a good start.
 
I started playing the game yesterday, and I'm digging it. I'm assuming the quality of life improvements have a lot to do with it. I can't imagine playing this game with a smaller inventory and no planet scanner for instance.
The signal booster seems a bit OP however. It costs basically nothing to build it and it reveals too much in my taste.

Base building seems cool. I found the perfect spot. Dense forests, amazing view of nearby planets, orange and purple night sky. I mean most planets look kinda bland from what I've seen but man when the procedural generation comes together it can really look stunning.

hah. yeah i built my first base in a place like that. giant planet in background.

they changed something about planets occluding as well. couple of times i briefly saw what looked like a planet "stuck" into another planet on my way to the surface, before the atmo obscured the lowest bit.
 
Titanium no longer drops from sentinels, but you can now get it from the clusters of storage tanks that you can blow up (instead of, I think platinum it was before?). There seem to be more of those storage tanks dotted around to compensate.

I find the new x menu quite fiddly. It doesn't stay open long enough for me to look through what's there. Maybe it's my age, idk.

A comparison doesn't need to be 1:1 to be an apt one. Like Minecraft, NMS should get content and functionality updates over time that will expand the experience accordingly.
 
All these changes and you still can't look around the canopy/cockpit when landed in your ship. Bizarre.

Scanning planets from space now shows you the resources you can gather there, and the quick context menu makes recharging things a breeze. Those are some nice QOL improvements.

I was actually wondering if it was named after the Foundation series, and they were going to go for a sequence of updates named after major SF works. I could see a "Gateway" update down the line, certainly!

Edit: Quite a lot would make good update names, actually. "Culture" could certainly fit for something that expands the alien races.
 
The sound of rain hitting the cockpit as you enter the atmosphere is a lovely touch. You can't see the rain until you land but the sound is nice.

I understand the clear differences but Minecraft added more and more things/tools to the core game. It didn't came out like it is today. Like i said, 3 - 4 of these meaty updates and this game could burn for a long time. Though there probably wont be 3-4 meaty updates except they make them paid DLC.
Flame shields of neogaf are probably not ready for a paid DLC announcement for NMS ...

Mod tools would be good too.

At least it looks like the game is not totally abandoned by HG.
 
Oh, the base building is all i wished for and more. All i wanted was to reclain a planet my home and be able to teleport back there from anywhere. The costumization seems more deep that i was expecting.

If they got mad backlash for the bad thinks they did, they also deserve mad props for the good ones, and this uptade is indeed really nice. Curious to see what they will be bringing more to the game next.
 
Do resources on the planet you place your base on replenish themselves? Now this game is worth my money. I am not attacking anyone that owned the game from day one nor joining the hurp durr no man's sky is a hype ripoff crowd either. Thanks to HG's efforts I now completely understand the scope of their vision and where this game is headed. Additionally it's $20 on Amazon and $36 via download on PSN.
 
Wow, I'm actually interested now. However if minecraft taught me anything, it's that i won't actually go back to enjoy future content updates, so i'll wait a bit longer.

It didn't for multiple years after first going on sale to customers, though.
 
Man, survival is tough. Or I just need to completely change my playstyle since I have been getting destroyed hard so far in the hour I've been playing. I keep dying without getting to my ship and repairing it, damn cold/radioactive starting planets.

Since I never bought the game when released .. this update has peaked my interest. Looking for more impressions before a purchase

Just saw the vid.. hum i like it ..
I can already imagine exploring planets with a buggy , could be great depending on how it's used.

The trailer wildlife is already in the game. So is digging. So are individuated ships. I don't recall boats being shown?

Well, it's partly luck of the draw. The hard flight deck is a certain distance above sea level, not above the highest terrain. So it's always been possible to get planets with deep canyons you can fly around in, just rare.

The most obvious answer is probably the true one: they did have multiplayer at some point, but took it out late in development.
 
So question about the base building, how customizable is it? Is it like "create base here, now the base is auto-created" or is it like Fallout 4 style go-nuts-with-creativity base building?
 
I'm done. I either have the worst luck ever in a game or there's some bullshit algorithm, that makes things I need super rare. before I had to get those spermanium cacti (or whatever they're called) I've seen them on planets, didn't mine them because I was still struggling with space on my fully upgraded suit. once it came up in a quest it took me 3 hours to find a planet with said cacti.

with that quest done I had to hire a korvax dude to continue. no problem! I mean, the game has only 3 races, shouldn't be an issue, right?

3 HOURS!!! warping through random systems checking every damn station, NOTHING! at this point you need to name your planets with what race they got and what rocks they provide. your log only documents things that produce iron or carbon, you know, the stuff you can find EVERYWHERE?

DONE.

heh, yeah, luckily you can blow it up with grenades, probably won't get you as many as mining it, but beats the alternative.

doesn't work with the stupid hazmat plants.
 
Have they fixed how often warp drives break and then not have materials to repair it for systems at a time?

Because...yeah...That's not fun.

Isn't your ship while you're in it just a flying carpet with no ship model? That's why you can only look at the front dash part.

I don't know. But I do know that sometimes I've got some unfriendly creatures out by the ship and I can't tell whether its OK to leave because the perspective is locked forward.

well you can look around with RS in space or atmo. they lock it for some reason while you are sitting on the ground. and yeah it bugs me too.

if they add vehicles i hope you need a ship with a proper garage. it would be weird to see a jeep just pop into existence next to a little fighter.

I think a disposable, craftable land vehicle would be really useful and would solve the problem of not having a "vehicle bay."

you don't build your base from scratch. you combine room elements with corridor elements and that's pretty much it. so, it does recognize it as "inside" to shield you from the hazardous environment (my base is on a planet that's burning hot and has acid rain). think less lego and more bioshock hacking mini-game if that helps.
 
Hope this gets an Xbox release one day. Game looks awesome as a chill exploration game even though it turned out a little shallow I just like the idea of it too much, but I'm not buying a console just for it.

Now that sounds cool, and could work if they never change the fuel consumption on launch. Land in a place, and explore with a buggy, rather than taking fly again.
