No Man's Sky: Foundation Update (v1.1)

This is an example of piss poor reporting to begin with, and it has been horribly misconstrued, because they only allowed Murray to answer yes or no, rather than provide nuanced replies. It's just as easy to attach gameplay elements that exist in NMS as it is to claim Murray was "lying".

Can you grief other players? (A little bit)
You can give planets and animals dumb names.

Can you customize the look of your character? (Murray is unsure and doesn't want to say yes, but ends up answering "sort of")
Your weapon is the only part of the player model that you can see, and you can equip different styles of weapon/mining rays.

Do you ever get a look look at your character? (You can see other characters and they can see you)
Most likely talking about seeing NPCs and them seeing you.

Will you be able to play with your friends? (Yes)
Arguably the worst offense. While playing with your friends can be taken in a wide sense , this question needed a more specific answer.

Is there a competitive element to this game? (Yeah, if you want that, yes)
Scanning and naming systems, planets, flora and animals for other players to see.

Hahhaahahahha

You don't get to basically describe the game as an MMO then say features got cut, it's actually a single player rock shooting game. FFS the lengths some people go to defend this stuff.

Also they continued to pretend that you could potentially run into other players right up past gold.

Also this hilarious article a few months before release

Please just stop. Go enjoy your patch, I hope it's good (genuinely).

Game still doesn't look anything like those E3 videos.

Spend time building a base...why? So you can sit on the same boring planet mining shit, or now let robots mine for you.

The feather in my cap will always be the 60 dollar refund I got from Sony because I said the game fucking sucks.

It was a cool trailer and I appreciate the work they did, but I feel the same. I'm not seeing the point of farming, creating and selling goods.

Survival mode...is no joke lol. Not sure if i just got a bad starter planet or what, Thamium9 and Zinc are almost non existent though which makes it extremely hard to travel anywhere without dying lol.

How you read that tweet is likely dependent on how you view HG; I don't get an victimization. . .at all. Simply that the last few months have been rough (it has) and that this patch means quite a bit to them (it probably does).
I'll tell you how I view it: As a developer, they should address the concerns that have been dragged out the past few months. They don't have to give every detail, every secret, etc - they just need to admit fault.

They aren't. They constantly have to remind people how small their team is, how so so hard they worked on it, how much this game means to them, etc.

That's narcissistic, full stop.

What about everyone that bought the game? What, exactly, about the consumer is less fucking important to address than your own trials and tribulations? At what point will they stop trying to pull on heartstrings?

They straight up presented a game that existed only in their own minds- what everyone else got, was just a shell. An empty, meaningless, half-hearted shell and they are so stuck up their own asses they can't see the problem.

Too much time has passed, IMO. Everything they've done makes it more difficult for 3rd parties like my team to be taken seriously.

I mean, being up front and honest about your game is probably the easiest thing you can do but instead they continue to hide from the issue and "woe is me" their way through development. That's not healthy for the industry, that's not healthy for us and that's not healthy for the consumer.

So, yeah, that tweet is garbage.

Guess my BF purchasing is redeeming itself. some interesting stuff there.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit myself. It's pretty much what I expected from my initial expectations.

Would like to see more work on bigger creatures and possibly allowing mor on screen at once for beefier PCs (Pro mode?).

But that's fairly decent first content update.

I remember the game being primarily marketed as an "explore the universe" game in which you could, but were highly unlikely to encounter other players.

Not quite MMO territory, unless I missed a lot of trailers.

"If you could have lived our lives"

oh get it over it you overselling shrill. Next time don't run a prerelease campaign of pure chaff and then release what was a relatively polished indie early access title at $60.

You lied your way to a fortune. No one will make the same mistake with one of your titles again.

Eh. People like you need to get over it.

Buyer beware. It's a fucking videogame

This is the first thing I've read about Survival mode. Do yo agree with these impressions?

Will update on first experience.
Update 1: The struggle is real and we have been spoiled. Make sure you dont travel without a supply of power gels for life support.
Update 2: It depletes way faster. I appeared next to a small shelter on a very cold planet, with a beacon for my broken ship 11 minutes walk distance away. To give you an idea, Life Support hits zero energy after a 2 minute walk. Definitely need to stock up before travelling, and hop from safe spot to safe spot. I just discovered how to make save points!
Update 3: maybe not that fast, but times flies when you are freezing and you scavenge for resources.
Update 4: The temp, radiation and life bars have an indicator to tell you how fast they are depleting now. Walking, running and jetpacking depletes life support at different rates, from slow to fast in that order. God its freezing, had to make a hole inside a giant Heridium rock.
Update 5: After initially dying from basic life support, it gets easier once you take it seriously and think of survival. Death means you get a cool quote, a probability of equipment brake, and loss of any resources currently in inventory (good idea to teleport to your ship any good stuff). There is no picking up stuff from death point (or at least there is no marker for it on ground. I have not gone back to specific spot of death).
Update 6: So i have some basic resources, get comfortable, then die out of a badly timed jetpack jump. You start from the last save point, without any of the stuff you picked up, so pacing is key here. Its a crawl to the ship, one small victory at a time.
Update 7: I think i just had an epiphany. One of the things you can build, is a communications terminal. It looks like a trading terminal, the floating type, but it has your name in the front, and you can leave messages there for other players. In other words, its a permanent, non instanced addition to the world. I wonder if the other buildings are non instanced as well? Will someone be able to see and use my built save points, or signal boosters? WILL OTHER PEOPLE SEE MY BASE? Not holding my breath for the last one, since it opens up lots of more questions. If anyone find out if buildings are instance or not, please post here as well.
Update 8: Made it to my ship. It was gruesome, slow work, about two hours. I blame the cold weather. I chose the Atlas path here.

I also read that for certain basic resources, like Titanium, you need an upgraded multi-tool...

The silence was not appreciated but I can empathize with how difficult the whole situation was. I sold my game and will wait for the second update to see how things go but I legitimately enjoyed playing this game so all the best to you hello games! And thanks for breaking radio silence and starting with foundation.

Now make a space zoo update where we collect animals for our space zoo. Please.

He didn't do it in every interview, but he said very clearly, on network television (The Late Show), that you could run into other people. Yes, it'd be rare, of course, but this sort of thing really sparked peoples' imaginations and it's just one example of many things that never came to be.

And this again:

TbunJsV.gif

And in that one particular interview -- The one in the gif above -- Yeah, if you just saw that one interview, you could be forgiven for believing it has a very significant multiplayer component. If you believed that I wouldn't blame you, I'd blame Sean. You can't just say shit. What you say matters.

yeah i cant even make it to my ship anymore, got to it once but then you need to repair stuff then i died

If people can read that much into one sentence in one tweet, no wonder they're keeping quiet.

I've questioned their lack of communication in other threads, but I am starting to realize the difficulty of it, the more I see of the anger directed towards, no matter how much one can point it being caused by themselves.

As long as they keep working on updates like this, I hope they do stay quiet.

Anybody bought a freighter yet?

I only seem to be getting 13 slot freighters. Can I upgrade the slots after buying it or do I have to buy a new one?

Don't want to spend most of my credits on a freighter if have to buy a new one to get more slots :/

Yeah I can see this too.

All we can do now is bunker down and see impressions and hope we get news on update 2 soon.

I'm sorry but I think that's bullshit. I've worked in a high pressure work environment as well but no one was compelled to lie about projects.

This wording is what I'm talking about you're not addressing the direct situation and for lack of a better term sugar coating it.

No PR person told Sean Murray to specifically go on late night talk shows and tell lies I don't believe that at all.

I have a lot more empathy for the small developer who puts their "blood and tears" into a game and doesn't lie consistently to produce thousands of sales.

I'm not going to argue the point with people who clearly just want to enjoy the game. But I will say just own what that you're okay with Hello Games' transgressions as long as they make and continue to support a game you enjoy playing. Don't patronize people, dismiss obvious factual criticism, or try to turn Hello Games and Sean Murray into a victim. That is not okay.

This is exactly my point of view. While I do think HG and Sean Murray have been the victim of a lot of verbal abuse, and that is completely unacceptable, at the same time I can't let those people destroy my right to be angry, disappointed and highly critical of everything concerning this game. If you like the game, good. If you think this update looks cool, fine. I don't get you, but that's alright. But don't dismiss me as some irrational hater, or assume I'm any more ok with people who've harrassed the developers, because I'm not.

I'm on your side. I want good games, and I want issues to be addressed and developers holding themselves accountable for serious mistakes. If my opinion gets drowned out because 99% of people disagree, then maybe it isn't such a big problem in the grand scheme. But there was a huge outpouring of negativity from decent human beings pointing out what to me were obvious and big issues, and they still haven't been addressed. That's a problem, and you don't have to dislike the game or agree with me on it being issues to be on my side in this.

Is anyone else considering starting the game from scratch? I'm on my fifth galaxy and I think I just might do that.

Me. But I don't want to lose my current save though and since the update is still downloading on my PS4 I don't know if my stuff will be overwriten or if I will have multiple save files.

Also, I would really hate if my discoveries disappeared. I really, really loved naming stuff and putting my mark in that regard, no matter how shallow of a "multiplayer" experience it was. Like, just the possibility of someone in these numerous systems finding my starting point, no matter how unlikely, mystified me. I actually found someone's starting planet once (about a month into release) and saw his landmarks, fauna, etc. I figured it was his starting planet due to the names he gave stuff. It was such a profound moment, even with all the drama surrounding the game and how uninspiring it felt in that time.

As long as they keep working on updates like this, I hope they do stay quiet.

The anger is because they won't address what happened in the first place. What are you not understanding?

Do you have any idea how frustrating it is if someone wrongs you then pretends like it never happened? It's going to follow them around forever until they eventually acknowledge it

When Sean talks about his hardships, I cry evrytiem :.(

Just bought 5 more copies to support this small, brave, did I mention small(?) team. I can't even begin to imagine what they've gone through.

"Too much time has passed"... But apparently not enough to let it go.

Maybe if people stop acting like assholes to them, they might.
The death threats were of course unwarranted, but they deserved the rest of the backlash they got. They get no sympathy from me in that regard.

On topic though, this seems like a fantastic update. Not enough for me to reinstall the game, but if they keep updating the game like this I'll have no choice but to give it a second chance.

Yep, pretty much. Yeah sprinting depletes life support faster than normal and jetpacking depletes it EVEN faster, and yes you need upgraded multi-tool now but it was like that for me on my old normal save as well.

They made changes to pretty much every aspect of the game.

edit: also...THE SCANNER TAKES FOREVER TO RECHARGE NOW.

Your own intergalactic cruiser? Eh.. holy shit, that is awesome. Stacking resources? Yes please. Auto-mining tools? Space station teleports?

This all sounds excellent.

Awesome news, it takes dedication to endure all the abuse (some deserved, some absolutely not) and plug away at delivering a huge free update. I hope they continue, and eventually get the following in:

- more wildlife variables (I know you can't change what's already been explored, but add new/exotic sectors to the universe OR a New Game+ mode)
- multiplayer aspects
- the space pirate / dogfight squadron stuff from the alpha builds
- stellar orbits from the alpha/beta builds (even as optional)
- phenomena such as asteroid impact, volcanism, supernova, etc that could require immediate evactuation
- a submersible vehicle for oceanic worlds
- fix the portals
- make the center of the galaxy significant
- more lore / stories that are quest-based

got got 1 hit killed by a crab thing

survival is nuts

trying to get to my ship is like the hardest thing i have ever done in a game

It's nice to see they are putting out big updates like this, but I don't understand why they didn't just like, release a roadmap or something shortly after release instead of being silent and allowing things to fester.

Are all modes independent of each other?

My vanilla save is separate? If I start survival mode I'm back to square one?

What other mode is available?

----edit.

I see a creative mode. Does this mean it's a God mode? Infinite thrust, materials etc etc etc? Planet and Galaxy hopping without any constraints?
